how are they going to hit us on the head next?

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 11:10 am

So at the start of almost EVERY fallout series DLC they take away all our equipment via some contrivance. We've been put in VR sims, abducted by aliens, forced to pretend to be slaves, gassed and dragged off. How many ways are there to separate someone from their hard-won loot, and then give it back later?

Lets help them out by coming up with ways.

1) poisoned by bad tin of Cram, wake up in hospital room

2) fall into pit trap, have to leave behind equipment to climb frayed rope out

3) robbed while asleep

4) robbed while awake

5) powerful magnets

6) amnesia

7) underpants gnomes took it all

8) the old switcheroo- gas vents come on, character falls asleep, wakes up with ALL THEIR GEAR.

Keep gear, but come up against enemies to whom it does little damage. No wait, that was Point Lookout.

I would like to see them do another halucination scene like the one in PL. Perhaps at first you think you have your gear, then it just starts vanishing from your inventory.

Seriously though, Dead Money was the first where your gear was properly taken away. I dount even count Anchorage, because it was a simulation. In Zeta and the Pitt, you get your stuff in like 5 mins.

Yea I still don't get the point of this. Father Elijah gives us a gun so why he care if we bring our own? If he wanted us to be unarmed he would have not given us anything. This seems like a major story flaw to me.
Other than this tho DM was pretty good.

Point Lookout was just done horribly, like getting destroyed by tribals with no armor and hunting rifles seemed a little silly.

Point Lookout was horrifying. I still remember the first fight with Swampfolk.

"They have BB guns? And they aren't wearing armor? Is this a joke? Time for some free XP!"

twenty seconds later:

"OH GOD MY LIMBS THE PAIN THE PAIN"

Equipment taken await near the end battle is just a good plot tool. However, I doubt they would keep your gear away for the whole DLC like Dead Money in the Divine; they would limited you by not giving ammo/spare parts (but there is always Jury Rigging).

I really, really hope it's powerful magnets.

How about...

The Courier, to get wherever it is he's supposed to be going, must cross a precarious rope-bridge which will only take so much weight before it falls to pieces.

Or I dunno, his stuff gets taken by a particularly nefarious turtle. Whatever.

You are forced into a cutscene where Dr. Li seduces you then once she's got you indisposed rolls you and leaves you tied up in a hotel room with nothing but your underwear. Your first mission in the DLC is doing odd jobs to get enough caps to pay the hotel owner for the room because Dr. Li was too cheap to pay for it.

How about this? You keep everything you bring along, but there are little to no supplies in the DLC itself. You'll have to make do with what you brought. The Divide is the perfect place to try this out, if we're gonna do a lot of trekking in the canyons. And hardcoe would be even more challenging.

Eh, it doesn't really bother me. I think that if they have a good reason for the purpose of design and story to take away your weapons, then they should absolutely do it. If they don't have a good reason, then they shouldn't.

I don't get this... The Swampfolk (whos head's are squishy) are almost a non challenge. I will freely admit that I haven't done PL before level 20 but why would you? I do OA at level 8 every time I roll a new toon and then no other DLC until 15. Also the NPCs are level adjusted to the PC. I don't think I have ever taken more then a hit or two from even large groups of them. Really it is just a matter of being prepared. Sneak and Small Guns at max and The Terrible Shotgun, The Perforator, Chinese Stealth Armor, and some grenades.

I looked and looked for that smiley face...

I guess the OP has a point if you consider a DLC to be an addition to the main game; you know, content that is specifically geared to enhance the main area. In F3 that would be Point Lookout (a different area but just a click away) and Broken Steel.
But the Pitt, Mothership Zeta and Operation: Anchorage are DLC that work as self-contained side adventures; I'd lump Dead Money in their (kinda vague) category. I don't mind having equipment taken away if it makes the game more challenging.
It does sort of bug me that we couldn't play the O:A simulator again, or that our Courier can't go back to the Sierra Madre. It just seems weird that the character knows something (its location) that we don't, you know? It's almost like it was a dream, except for all that loot.

There already is a mod to get back to Sierra Madre, but from the comments I've read, the modder is trying to fix a bug with the ghost people. In a day or two it should be working fine.

In the tes games I usually intentionally 'lost' all my loot so my super uber character would have to run around in fur armour and iron weapons just to prove how deadly he is. I liked what they did in Dead Money. I hope the next dlcare really different though - maybe use more of the map and create a place that you can go back to. Have someone invade NV.
