how are they going to solve the difficulty in arranging item

Post » Wed Jan 06, 2010 5:44 am

In morrowind obviously there was no issue, as there was no physics engine to speak of, so placing stuff was mighty easy. In Oblivion however it was a terrible drudgery to try and get your abode to look half-decent. Obviously Skyrim will have some sort of highly improved physics engine, but I'm just wondering how they are going to stop things being knocked over so easily? Maybe make everything much 'heavier'? Or perhaps a way to lock things in place if you want?

Good point. Oblivion physics had a lot of other issues too, but that's not to be discussed here. I believe they have noticed this as well, so most likely they will provide a better physics engine in Skyrim. I'm not sure how that would be implemented though, I'll let them surprise me.

The idea of being able to lock things in place sounds very satisfactory to me. :)

I'm hoping for a "fixed placement" option.

We don't know what they're doing in this regard, though I think that if the physics behave more realistically in this regard, that alone would make it easier to make sure everything stays where you want it to, part of the problem here is that items had a tendency to fly away after the slightest touch, which of course is not very relistic, in real life, objects that aren't extremely light which are placed securely on a surface don't fall that easily, and when they do, they tend to just fall most of the time, rather than just flying off the room. Aside from that, improving the mechanics for lifting objects would also help, though I'm not sure how much one can do in that regard with a limited amount of buttons to work with.

Having more display cases and other such things in houses would also help, I think, as it provides places which are easy to use to display items with, rather than needing to find space for them on shelves or tables which often already have things on them.

And yes, allowing one to fix an item in place would be convenient for decoration, Oblivion's Decorator Assistent mod does something like this, though if it's in the game by default, it could be done in a less round-about fashion, perhaps simply being able to press a button to lock the item your holding into position until it's deliberately moved by the player would do, though an ideal system would be one where that's not needed because as long as you're careful, you can get things to be where you want them and stay there without the help of such things.

It wasn't that difficult to place objects after a little practice. The "mousetrap" effect as I've seen it called was more prevalent if you placed too many objects real close to a lot of other objects. If you kept a bit of space between the things you're trying to position for the most part they would be fine was my experience. Here's some shots on my Oblivion display room with a ton of weaponry on display. Every item was hand placed in game, not via the CS. So it CAN be done with a little patience and practice. I'm quite proud of my display. Check it out::

Oh, by the way, I'm definitely NOT saying it was perfect either, as there is definite room for improvement. I just don't look for it in Skyrim, but that's just my opinion.

Well Thats will be awesome if devs will take some inspiration from
Put it in its Place - Enhanced Grabbing
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19847
So what can be done
Toggleable grab button,
Locking items at places

But most interesting its reaction of NPC on moving objects around
They can react on nose from thrown items
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0K4xkCRLYI

They can detect and have different reactions on moving of items
They can put back items where they was
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zl6rjqanOY
and become angry from messing with their items and push player out of house or call guards if player too powerful, but also
appreciate putting items at places
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oujSeIeqhM
I think such features will be easy since NPC can bring back dropped stuff then they can put it into places as well, if player will have house with servants thats can be fun.

Another things thats can be done its make some armor and weapon stands like
mannequins
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2055
or stands
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27683
Or weapon stands like

I always had poltergeists in my houses and I'd show up and suddenly something would fly off the wall at me.

Kinda freaky.

I'd be cool with a fix object option, but I'm not a decorator, so hiring a magical, Haskil-like chamberlain would be keen. He'd fix objects in place for me, according to their kit ID and house display options.

Locking items on their spot.. with glue?

I sure hope the objects feel a bit heavier and otherwise just stay where they are if no one is doing anything to them-I can't stop laughing when thinking about my sisters awesome dinner table she made in he bruma house, and then she rose up from her chair and everything went flying around the house.. good times. But nothing like that in Skyrim, thank you :sleep2:

I hope there is some way to fix items in place, and I hope walls are included in this.

I enjoy customizing a house to my likings, and decorating with various loot from my conquests. However, when one thing goes wrong and it's all thrown, I pretty much give up on redoing it lol.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is a big concern of theirs, so they might not solve this, or even try to. If you ask me, they ought to add a function that freezes the items rotation as you move it from place to place, so once you get it standing upright (or however you want it) you can lock its rotation and move it to where you want it without it flopping all over the place.

I don't see how it was unrealistic in Oblivion. If you run or bump into a small object in real life, it's going to move, and that's just how it was in Oblivion. It was annoying as hell though, and I hope they make it less frustrating somehow.

All that's needed are better physics, better AI(they always knocked my wine over...) and the option to automatically fill bookcases, weapon racks etc.

Havok Behavior.

Isn't that just for character animations?

Fallout 3's physics were already a tad better than Oblivion's, I imagine Skyrim's will be even better. At least in the sense that when you touch one item on a table the rest doesn't start floating. I guess you're still dragging items around the same way, with the risk of knocking stuff over.

Maybe they could just add an option for the houses you've bought...a switch between glued objects / havoc fun!

I'm less concerned about knocking things over than I am about how I will be able to place objects in the first place. In Oblivion, it was very hard to place items in the exact spot and orientation that you wanted to.

The grabbing/rotation system from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwO533cANKg would be nice. Easy rotation and placement.

Not a question of realism. Its a question of expedience and frustration. Its not fun to try to fill a bowl with gems that cause collision explosions if they touch each other too hard. Its not fun to spend an hour arranging everything only to accidentally bump it and send stuff flying.
