Hold the right mouse button and move the mouse. Different directions will produce different swings.

Hold down the right mouse button and swing.
moving it up is a stab, more chance to hit but less damage.
down is a power attack, high damage but low chance to hit.
Left and right is your standard attack.

This is why Bethesda should have released the manual in pdf format, or at least included a walkthrough with the zip!

It's listed in the control config menu, which is easier to check than the manual.

Yes, but I wasn't just talking about this question. I was talking generally, across all the threads. We're free staff members for Bethesda with all the questions we have to cover because there is no manual.

You don't have to answer anything. You're here entirely by choice. The UESP wiki covers practically everything anyone could possibly want to know about Daggerfall's gameplay and mechanics.

I can't find a control config menu in Arena. Even if we were talking about Daggerfall, I tried clicking Mouse 2 over and over again after checking the button assignment in the control config menu, but nothing happens. There is nothing in the game menus for either game that explains the drag-to-attack game mechanic.

My mistake, I did assume that people were talking about DF without reading the OP.

However, Arena's controls are explained in the setup doc provided in the download package.

Re: DF manual
There are so many errors and omissions in the DF manual that it is better for new players to read the UESP and the Beginner's Guide and other gameplay FAQs.

Arena's keys can't be reconfigured unless you want to remap your keyboard in DOSBox, but that means that, say, if you make the W key function like the up arrow key, then pressing "W" on the command line will probably take you back to your last command.

It's pretty funny, actually. Left hand on arrow keys, right hand on mouse. Never done that before in my life, maybe with the exception of some old flash games or something.

That setup might have been borrowed from id's games. Wolfenstein 3D had it and DOOM refined it. The story goes that http://www.rome.ro, the guy who designed the UI is left handed and uses the mouse on the left of his keyboard. When he plays he's using his right hand on the arrows. It made him deadly in deathmatch. Games (and gamers) migrated to WASD and similar configurations because it's more comfortable for most people.

The first time I tried Arena I got too frustrated with the controls to get anywhere. I might have to give it another go when I get tired of Daggerfall.

It might have been, especially with the strafe modifier keys that DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D had.
