how bullet penetration should be

Not really a suggestion, but more of a heads up for an idea what bullet penetration really should be in Fallout. Not all cover stops bullets.

So you are tying to tell me hiding behind a car door or thin wall will not save me from a rifle bullet? Who would have known that?

It would be cool to have depleted uranium bullets, very poweful. Able to pierce many things, nothing in Fallout would be safe.

Today, the one thing I know that uses them are A-10 Thunderbolt's or warthogs, which is also name the tank destroyer.

Eddo, as I said in another thread. Stop, Think, ask yourself "is this fun?".

Answer here = no. The forum would be full of annoyed gamers complaining about magic bullets going through cover and killing them.

The Warthog is the most common use of the rounds, which are 30 caliber. At least in the US.

All US anti-tank rounds are DU (provided they're not HEAT rounds). They're used in everything from tanks to A-10s to even the Apache's gun.

And it's use is very controversial because of claims that it is highly toxic.

Only the dust is controversial. Once the DU round hits its target and becomes dust. Battlefield clean up after the 1st Gulf War is when that controversy started (I think).

I wouldn't mind seeing DU .50cal rounds come back to Fallout but we need a HMG first to make it worth it for me.

Regardless of what uses them, the A-10's 30 caliber version is the most commonly used.

I don't think if someone stumbled on how to make them or any amount of them that they would complain that they were toxic in Fallout.

Most common or not, it's still irrelevant. DU rounds still come in many shapes and sizes. Whether it's the 120mm tank gun, the 30mm from the A-10 or Apache guns or the 20mm from the Cobra guns. I don't know of any specific .50 caliber DU rounds, but the SLAP ammunition I linked to earlier use tungsten, but could easily us DU instead. And that's the important thing. That it can be and is used in smaller ammunition.

Alright now that this has been established would these basically destroy someone in power armor? I think it would definately be a hinderence. Maybe it could be ultra rare for some gun such as an anti-materiel rifle. Just on the idea FO 4 will have DT and DR, the bullets would say something like, bypasses all Damage Threshhold and damage resistance, but say there is only 20 of them locked deep in a dungeon.

If DU rounds destroy tanks, power armor won't stand much of a chance. Plus, it has a nifty property in that they are pyrophoric. Meaning that when they hit and shatter into tiny particles, those particles combust in a fireball. So the round would hit the PA, punch through it and combust inside.

Actually yes, you just have to be smarter with your cover. A little verisimilitude doesn't necessarily take fun away.

Also when the particles shatter they remain sharp, so those could still blast through other parts too.

I think the self-sharpening aspect comes into play really on the initial impact and penetration. In that it strikes, then fractures in a way that remains sharp, instead of blunting on impact. Once it gets through, though, I'm not sure how much secondary penetration you're going to get.

Meh, I've been doing research on DU and sabot rounds recently for something I'm working on.

Yeah. It was part of the research I did related to http://www.newvegasnexus.com/imageshare/image.php?id=18033. (if you click on the author (me), you can see other pics related to the mod.)

And yes, I used lots of google. It's the easiest way to do quick research.
