How can I play Oblivion and enjoy it?

The dungeons were repetitive, I hated the lack of choices, the oblivion gates, the game play, the everything.
How can I play this and have fun?

If you hated the game, justt play something else? Maybe it's just not your cup of tea. I loved the game, played it for hundreds upon hundreds of hours over a long span of time - I didn't need anyone to convince me to enjoy it. If I start a game that I end up not liking... I don't spend time trying to make myself like it.

Lots of other games out there.

I want to enjoy the game, I can see it's redeeming qualities, but I just can't, maybe I'm not playing in a way that's enjoyable, so I'd like to know how people have fun with this game.

I found the dungeons full of wonderful variety. I loved the loads of choices. I love the gameplay, almost everything. I will admit I'm not super crazy about oblivion gates though, but with so many choices, they are so very easy to skip/pass/avoid.

As wise Leydenne says, it sounds like it is not your cup of tea. Try something else. :)

Edit after seeing your newer post: Roleplay.

Maybe it's just not the game for you.

The key I think is to immerse yourself in the world. And enjoy the environment, learn the lore, use strategy to defeat the enemies.

I've been playing pretty much since the release and it is still fresh to me. Magic and Alchemy are great ways to be creative.

The dungeons were repetitive, I hated the lack of choices, the oblivion gates, the game play, ...

Oblivion gates are repetitive because they automatically generated.

But I don't understand the comments about dungeons at all. They are very diverse and hand created with very interesting aspects. Maybe you're just not giving the game a chance.

I played for 60 hours and did about 95 quests, went online because I was bored, found the best quests in the game, and found I had already done them.
I gave this game a chance and saw what is supposedly the best it has to offer.
I've heard the shivering isles expansion is actually better than the full game, so I may try that.
This is why I wish I had a good pc, I would enjoy mods.
What is there to do besides quests and exploring, because I've done the quests I've wanted to and I disliked this game's dungeons.

Two things helped me enjoy it more:
1) role-play idea
2) Mods - really, without it, it is easy to find O a little dull or at least lose a lot of interest

(Also, maybe it is indeed a game you cannot enjoy, but let's give it a try, right?).

The first is actually the hardest, as it depends on what you want, given what the game offers (the mods will only make sense AFTER this idea).

My favourite character was a Shadow Assassin with a background story that showed why she had a grudge aginst the empire. She spent her time figuring out ways to bring down rulers, nobles and imperial guards *undetected*, but her higher target kills always had asignature: she left a bouquet of flowers (or whatever flowers were found).

She used only a bow and carried 20-24 arrows *only*; no armour, only that black robe and hood for the operations, elegant / noble dress for 'social interaction' and thongs for her seductive / lascivious conducts (hey, I'm a man, I like to see these things sometimes :)). She'd have low Str / End, high Int, Pers, Agility and Speed. Her skills were: Marksman, Sneak, Acorbatics, Alchemy, SPeechcraft, Security and Illusion.

She'd never fight in arena for fame, coz fame is not in he interest; she'd join every guild possible (using different disguises), coz getting hgiher in those ranks could provide easier access to high-end targets. When part-taking in a main quest sort of thing, it was solely for the purposes of deception, giving out the wrong idea that she was an ally, only to be able to murder the key gurads / nobles / rulers characters.

MODS
Now - I managed to use some mods to make this all mor fitting to her (No Psychi Guards, Beauty mods, Repair Arrows, Thief Arrows, etc...) . Only my machine cannot handle O, so I got tired of installing, reinstalling LOTS of stuff, over and over... But I was enjoying it a lot.

Now, whats YOUR style? Your character concept? How do you see him approaching things / situations / social stuff? Only when you somehow start answering these questions will you be able to shape your character more lively.

Do not give up - research, ask, etc... It takes time - Acadian herslef has a hell of an awesome build, just check it out.

I'm on PS3, no way I can have mods.
Ok, I guess I'm giving up on this game permanently.
It is a GREAT game, but it's problems make it unplayable.
I'm sure Skyrim will address some of these, so I will be pre-ordering that, thanks anyway...

Just try a different game.

I remember everyone told me Bioshock is amazing, Bioshock is the best game, Bioshock is so good.

I ended up finding Bioshock rather boring, not because of all the hype (as I never believed to begin with) but because it simply didn't appeal to me. Similarly, there are several games for everyone that people like, but they don't. It's just natural.

I know it may make you feel bad that others have spent hundreds of hours on a game that you can't bear to play, but maybe there's something you like that someone else can't bear to play.

Different strokes for different folks.

When I get bored with a video game, or find it boring, I find a way to make the ebst of it. Roleplaying is my main one. But if it really isnt that good to me, I just stop.

Don't feel like you have to like it, because in the end you are just gonna hate it even more. So my advice to you is find a game you enjoy, and don't have to ask how to enjoy.

oblivion's real charm shines when you ROLEPLAY.

I have a current bandit hunting ranger about 10 hours in... I care not for TeH Uber Swoordzz or armour.. care not for working around the levelling system... care not for 'when do i do xxx quest for best reward'... care not even for quests..

just me, my iron bow, leather armour... running around the valus mountains hunting bandit camps.

battlehorn castle is my home, the soldiers there my 'merry men' we are like guardians of the land, the bandits I imagine are a now broken up army of thieves and butchers known as the 'black hand'.

I immerse myself as if I was the character, meaning carry only whats realistic, dont randomly raid each dungeon i come across. I wont even touch ayleid ruins for a bandit hunter has no place doing so.

the more I play oblivion like a videogame, the more bored I become with it.

hoarding loot, collecting uber-swords, amassing hundreds/thousands of gold.... these are the things which make it too gamey for me.

the levelling system negates it anyway.

I have no problem doing any of the main quest/expansion/guild quest with the rusty iron weapons you get in the starting sewer.

I work not to become a super god like warrior... I work to immerse myself. 1000 hours and im still not bored.

It's a brilliant game. Just sling some armor on, and walk through the beatiful forests and take it all in. Don't fast travel what ever you do, it spoils it. I always just stop in the middle of no where and look around, it's quite beautiful.

Anyway if you still don't like it try Fallout 3. Most people who didn't like OB liked that.

yeah when i first played it it was on the ps3.now i have it on my laptop and modded the hell out of it.made it so much more enjoyable.i have combat mods(Deadly Reflex 5,Unnecessary Violence,DMC Stylish)camera mod that puts it over the shoulder like resident evil 4 or gears of war, tons of armor mods, the dreaded FCOM setup, added quests, etc, etc.so yeah i understand what you say,on ps3 it was ok,i played for a while until CoD MW,and then MGS 4.after that i kinda put it aside.got it again recntly on my laptop and modded it.and bam i love it now.as for the problems that s what is awesome about the pc version ,all the unofficial patches, and wahtnots that people modded the game to make playable.i still think its weak that bethesda puts out a shoddy halfmade game, make bank off of it and then let the modders make it playable.but wahtever.

I understand your complaint.
By itself Oblivion was designed to please the casual player, so game play is somewhat repetitive and simplistic.
To get rid of this limitation, search for mods that change the loot/NPC/Creature leveling, fill dungeons with hand placed creatures/loot, and so on.
It will make Oblivion a more interesting experience.

EDIT: I see you are on PS3. No modding then. You have a problem here, my friend.

I kind of agree, that's why I don't do all the 5+ 5+ 5+ power gaming stuff, once I started doing that, it's like it kind of ended, when I finally got to the top. Now I just play naturally without paying attention to what skills I raise and such, have a much better time :)

For me, it's unnatural to avoid 5/5/1 or 5/5/5 as well as playing to maximize/conserve resources. :)

TES games are complex and require the player to put forth a lot of effort to dig into the details of the mechanics in order to decide how to play the game in a way that matches the individual player's preferences. Generally, the TES games have sufficient flexibility to allow this to happen even without mods, but mods improve the opportunities, of course. However, it cannot happen without a great deal of effort by the player. TES games are not really intended for casual or immediate gratification, or even moderately delayed gratification.

But as others have said, perhaps such games are not for you. I mean, as much as I love gaming and have been involved with electronic games since Pong and Spacewars on teletype machines, there are games that I have not played and/or have no interest in despite how much some people like them.

Yes, very true. However, it is a shame that the level mechanics were designed for the layman....

I wonder if the OP enjoys open world games? If a person doesn't like that style then they are bound to struggle.
Perhaps he/she should try Fallout 3 or Borderlands? If enjoyment is still not found, then there is no hope.

For me the pleasure comes from the character I am going to play; not from the quests. My characters must be out of the ordinary from the beginning. I see myself more as a guide and mentor to that character rather than as seeking to win/lose in a game.

I have only one rule; I will never reload a game to fix a problem. If they die then they are truly dead for I will never load and play that character again; the exception is a software crash or game glitch. The same applies to lesser accidents and unfortunate mistakes. They must live with the fact of human frailty and imperfection. Sometimes, this is a an amazingly hard thing to do.

My characters are more than mere crash dummies, When I became bored with Severus around level 25, I took it as; "Severus is bored." I thought about what he would say if I asked him what would get him excited again. He said he wanted to completely cover the entire map. What followed was an epic road trip that lasted through several levels and months of gaming. When Sarrah, the pure mage got bored, she said she wanted to wear Daedric armor and fight with a sword. What followed was, again, epic.

This may not be your answer but then you never know till you try.
