Well everyone's definition of roleplaying is different, there's no structured set of rules you must obey. Many people consider RPing as simply doing realistic things to increase immersion, ie. eating and sleeping regularly, imposing self limit on carry weight, bringing cutlery and cooking utensils when traveling, etc. Some people go even more in depth, creating a history for their character and having them develop a personality dictating things they will and will not do, like supporting certain factions vehemently or worshiping Daedra. I suppose RPing requires some self restraint when it comes to exploiting the game, however taking high end gear or lowering the difficulty in no way diminishes your RP if it fits. Perhaps try mapping out a general course for your character and add what roleplaying elements you want into it, if you like then great and if not that's fine too.

Roleplaying is about setting yourself rules and/or objectives. For example, atm I'm trying to roleplay a hand to hand khajhit. I'm level 13 and I've never swung a sword or whatever. My goals are the following:

- khajhit mercenary/soldier of fortune

- never use a weapon, fists only

- shields are ok

- use of alchemy to help me in my fights

- smith my gear or find it

- no magic excepts for shouts

- don't become master of [insert guild]

Give the character a backstory
Give the character it's own personality
Play the game as if you are a spectator and give the character a life of it's own.
Don't do everything. Only do what suits your character.

A few months ago I made a Redguard pimp called Black Dynamite.

He married Camilla (Faendal likes to 'visit' her) and lived in lakeview manor.
Hired Lydia as the steward for lakeview manor.
Rayya is the housecarl.

He pickpocketed the clothes/armour (leave boots on) from the 3 female NPCs and collected 700 septims a week from Camilla.
He stopped the crime in Riften.
He used Teleknesis to throw [censored] before he walked in rooms.

Yes.

To me, a good backstory is the most important. It doesn't have to be down to extreme detail, just something that explains that character. Then the characters, at least for me, grow from there and dictate where we're going.

To roleplay in Skyrim you will have to accept some limitations but other then that you certainly can. Me personally I would try to avoid a character who gets too overpowered or even becomes the Dragonborn. You do have to suspend your disbelief but it can be fun at times roleplaying in Skyrim and seeing how your actions connect to your character.

Here's what I do:
I Make a background for my new character before wen creating him. Usually in the form of a back story that ends in an explanation how he/she ends up crossing the border and getting sent to the execution. commit it to memory or type it.
Then, based on that back story, i give my character some characteristics and a personality that he/she will begin the game with. Then for every action my character makes from the start I ask myself "what would he/she do". You have to get in the mindset of your character.

I also like to play with a certain character build as well, which I incorporate into their back story.

Skyrim was good and fun before, but I would get tired of it sort of quickly. Once i began RPing characters, I would get really immersed. I think this brings out the real fun in skyrim

For someone who seems to prefer game play over role play, picking Khajiit is a contradiction.

Master races are Bretons and Orcs.

Adept races are Nords, Dunmer, Altmer, and Argonians.

Milk drinker races are Imperials, Red Guards, Khajiit, and Bosmer.

I prefer a bit of both role play and game play, hence Nords in Skyrim for me.

Nice ROLE play list. Mine happens to be a GAME play.

Can't say I agree where Dunmer and Orc are on your list though in the POV of Nords. Breton should actually be swapped with them.

Im currently roleplaying an argonian who grew up in the orphanage in riften and came of age and got tossed out on the streets.

Some gameplay restrictions im using that have made things a LOT more fun are:

No perks in crafting, and i can i can only use 1 of the three crafting skills.

I cant improve weapons or armor and i cant sell anything i craft.

I cant use any enchanted items or sell any enchanted items (i went with smithing, if i went with enchanting id allow a self made enchanted neck and ring).

I can only use armor or weapons that i crafted myself or bought from a store (with no smithing perks this makes the good gear hard to come by).

I cant sell weapons or armor (rings and necks are ok though) to stores.

I picked 5 skills beforehand and those will be the only ones i put perks into. This helps me avoid my desire to grab certain perks that are awesome in skills i rarely ever use.

This makes gold MUCH harder to come by and MUCH harder to hold on to. It also makes treasure (like gems and fancy jewelry) feel a lot more like treasure since those are a huge part of my income. It makes playing as a thief feel rewarding since things are worth stealing since gold is hard to come by. It makes combat more challenging. Im really enjoying it a lot.

Its all about what you find fun though, this works for me but might not for you. For more ideas check out this: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1458747-ridiculous-roleplaying-rules-2/ and pick out ones you think would be fun.

As mentioned, there are no hard and fast rules for RP, and don't let anyone tell you any differently. If it can be explained to your own satisfaction then you are the only one whose opinion matters. For example:

Obviously, when death is imminent, your Draconic will to endure comes to the surface, giving you an ever so slight edge. When the threat is dealt with you reflect on how the power seems outside your control (i.e. you turn the difficulty back up)...or you realize your potential better now, having faced down certain doom (i.e. the difficulty remains).

Oh, but you're not actually Dragonborn, you say? Clearly your faith in [Aedra or Daedra name here] has given you another chance. Or if you're not a believer, well, who says you have to believe, or even know, to have something watching over you? Maybe it was a quest you did that acquired someone's favor, or maybe it's a quest you've yet to do. Fate works in mysterious ways. (And if you're one of those "I control my own destiny!" types, then you're already an RPer anyway. )

This reminds me, the restoration perk Avoid Death is pretty neato in "I'm about to die" situations.

The only thing that comes close is the Argonian and Imperial racial powers. Argonian isn't instantaneous and Imperial power is truly just an "oh-[censored] button" to run away. Nord works too, but that counts as an assault if friendly NPCs are nearby.
