Could anyone tell me if there is any way, other than "active effects" under magic, to see why I am suffering from a skill penalty? My two-handed skill, which was in the upper 90s, is now 25 and displayed in red.

I don't have a disease (well, not counting lycanthropy!), and active effects is showing only bonuses. I went back to a previous save and found the same issue, so know I have used shrines, slept, waited etc. in the meantime. It looks like my only option, to save about a LOT of game, is to go back several saves. Most disappointing, particularly because I've no idea why this should be, and the game appears to offer no information.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Other people have said it's a graphical glitch (not sure if that's true as I never had it happen to myself).
Pretty much everyone agrees leveling the skill again will get rid of it.
