How can I Sneak better?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:41 pm

Hi everyone. I'm wondering what tips or advice you all may have concerning Sneaking in Fallout 3? I have 100 Sneak, and I have the Chinese Stealth Suit, but sometimes I want to see if I can successfully sneak up on an enemy for a sneak attack critical, without the Stealth Suit. I tried just wearing a Raider Troublemaker outfit, but I got busted right at the last minute.

Soooooooooo, I'm wondering if there are any tips or tricks I could do that would help me make better sneak attacks, with just regular clothes or low level armors e.g. Raider stuff. Thanks for any help. G :) :ninja: :toughninja:

The Silent Running Perk is pretty much a must have for succesful sneaking.
Other than that, turn of the pipboy light and staying out of the line of sight. Also it's easier to sneak in the shadows/at night.

Not carrying around a lot of weight is supposed to help as well, although I personally have never noticed any difference.

Thanks MeltBanana for the tips. I do already have the Silent Running Perk already, and I very rarely use my Pip Boy light for anything.........but I haven't tried sneaking in the shadows at night. I'll give this a try, but inside buildings that have a lot of lights on is going to be a problem. Any more ideas, my fellow Fallout 3 fanatics??? Thanks, G :fallout:

Thanks NinjaFish, but I'm talking about just using knives and swords alone, and if possible to score a sneak attack critical that way. That's why I'm trying to learn from other's sneak methods. : )

How close are you trying to get? The closest you'd ever need to get would be for an Unarmed attack, and as long as you are behind them you can get close enough for that even with Sneak around 30. Armor weight affects sneak unless you have Silent Running.

Now that's a good question d0gmeat. I've always had it in my mind, that in order to use melee weapons, I had to sneak right up next to them: like within 1 or 2 feet of an enemy, then attack. Could I make a successful attack from further back...I use VATS btw.

Thanks, G

I've never avtually tried this, but the AI being what it is it might actually work.
Find one of those big moveable barrels and push it around in front of you, As soon as [CAUTION] pops up stop and wait til your hidden again. Keep repeating it until you're close enough to make your kill.

You might need to pretend you're in a Warner Bros cartoon for it too make sense though. Silly raider not noticing the barrel getting closer and closer everytime he turns around. :shakehead:

I'm not sure about Melee attacks, but for Unarmed you can enter VATS a few feet back, then you teleport close to them once the attack starts. Try approaching an enemy and spam the VATS button until you get something other than 0%.

Does weight really factor into sneaking?

First..... if you have the chinese stealth suit, use the special mirolurk 'Shady Hat' that Moria gave you along with the stealth suit.
If you don't want to use the stealth suit then wear no armor at all and use the Shady Hat. Be prepared to possibly take a hit but
if you get the first critical hit then you should be able to defeat the enemy before they can attack.
I have noticed something about the Dart Gun use...... If you hit the wall around an enemy, the enemy will run to the wall and investigate the
dart. Sometimes, it is almost as if they investigate the dart and then backtrack from line of sight to where it might have been fired.
Recon an area for things you can hide behind; fire a dart at a wall, when the enemy backtracks to the spot where you fired it they will
eventually turn their back on you and you can leap out and get the job done. I use a ripper......... or sword or combat knife or
supersledge or............................ :) It would be nice if you could throw a pool ball across a room to make an enemy investigate the
noise...... then sneak up on them while thier back is turned....
