Rant threads are against the rules.

And to answer your question, it is ALWAYS a hardware, installation, or codec issue. The game itself is at no fault at all.

If you want assistance, please describe in some more detail the problems you are having. These forums have helped lots of people play the game. But everybody here is a volunteer, and we can't help members who don't want to be helped enough to cooperate.

I had to join this forum just to ask you what you base this statement on, i have never seen such a stupid remark, you just need to google this issue to see that the game is full of flaws, why do you think they produce patches, they produce patches because the game is flawed. What patch are we on now, it's taken all those patches and it's still not running right.
So to say it's never the game really is silly in the extreme.

Sorry, but on every other game forum you will find users that experience similar issues. Of course there are always driver/software/hardware combinations that can cause trouble, but that's how it is for any game and Fallout3 is in no way an extreme case. Really only Source and Unreal engines are near unbreakable, however they usually don't have to power worlds nearly as complex as Fallouts worldspace (and yes I know there are MMOs based on the Unreal engine, and NO their worldspace is not as complex as Fallout 3s), and when they did (as was the case with of Vampire Bloodlines which still doesn't come close to Fallouts complexity ) they had heaps of issues as well.

Also a large amount of problems posted can be traced back to people modding their games, despite having little knowledge how to handle mods.

im basing this on the fact that some people have played the PC version and have had minimum to no problems at all. i HAVE googled it and there are so many different solutions that apparently work and they havnt for me. so its more of a question of how can this be? i have tried many different things.... i have no idea what to do now. im at a dead end....

My reply was to the person who said that it's never your game but always your system, what a ridiculous thing to say Allstarn08, (thats why i included their quote in my post).

emtry53, now that you have everybodys attention, lol, what is your issue and what are your system specs, we may be able to help you.

Before you start asking and wondering what patches you need to install or tweaks you need to make, etc. I would suggest you start here:
http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/srtest/

If you PASS (and I recommend meeting not only the Required specs, but the Recommended as well) and you are still having trouble, then I would proceed with patches, drivers, tweaks, etc. as suggested.

Hope this helps.

emtry53,
I know how it feels, i have all but given up on this game. Crash after crash wears a bit thin after a while.

Allstarn08,
Sorry m8, i would have to agree with stoney, this guy has come here for help and you are saying his game is fine, not only that but you are saying everybody who has had a problem with this game has a problem with their system in one form or another.
Sorry man but you need to get real.
This game has problems and telling a gamer that his rig or setup is to blame is, well, pretty lame. Do you work for Bethesda ?.
Funny how all other games work fine with "hardware, installation, or codec issues."
Stoney was right, if the game is so great, why all the patches?.
Hang in there emtry53, you may get yet another patch that will cure your "hardware, installation, or codec issues." LOL.

thank you all for backing me up on this issue, i have posted my dxdiag on another forum but i copy and pasted it here since you guys are being very understanding. also, i have run the test and passed the minimum and the recommended with flying colors. may i also state that im not dumb as a doorknob when it comes to tweaking with PCs as long as i have a bit of guidence or a bit of time to mess around on my own....im by far not an IT guy or a software guru at all but i can hold my own for the most part. so here is my dxdiag and ill state what ive done so far with no help,

1. turned off all startup background apps per Bethesda themselves. - no luck
2. downloaded the k-lite codec - no luck
3. rolled back drivers to 182.xx??? - no luck
4. downloaded and installed unoffical patch - no luck
5. tried the original version by its self - obviously no luck
6. tried FOSE- no luck
7. windowed mode - no luck
8. spoke to bethesda on the phone and had tech support help through email- no luck!

thats about it that i can even think of, thanks alot :)

I have been playing this game for about 8 month with minimal problems at all. My specs are in sig, so I don't know if it's fair to say that many people are having problems. I actually ended the Main Quest before any DLC's came out without a single crash.

1. The first thing is your amount of Ram: 2GB with Windows Vista is a no no (Especially for Playing Games) I would suggest installing XP.

2. Try running the game in Safe-Mode through the FalloutLauncher (Minimal Settings).

3. If you insist on running Vista with 2GB of Ram and playing this game, perform a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796.

4. Try installing a newer driver (not the 190.xx as they are horrible) making sure to use http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/.

5. Check CPU, Graphics Card temperatures as they may be getting a bit hot. Ensure yourself that your PSU has enough power for your Video Card.

I would really either consider upgrading Ram or installing XP, as Vista uses 1GB of ram by itself and unless you have 3 to 6GB of ram, you are going to struggling period running applications, let alone games. Only get 3Gb if you have a x86 or 32-bit OS.

I hope that helps.

..how can this be? i have tried many different things...

It's a perhaps unfortunate unlisted "feature" (liability) of Windows. Due to the development environment that is Windows, as well as the development environment that is the PC, there are pretty much infinite (at the very least astronomically high) numbers of possible permutations of hardware and software combinations, which all add up to unique individual possibilities for error with a given piece of software.

..Stoney was right, if the game is so great, why all the patches?...

Playing Devil's advocate... As is complained in many, many threads, the patches aren't fixing game issues; they are adding achievements for DLC.

1. turned off all startup background apps per Bethesda themselves. - no luck
2. downloaded the k-lite codec - no luck
3. rolled back drivers to 182.xx??? - no luck
4. downloaded and installed unoffical patch - no luck
5. tried the original version by its self - obviously no luck
6. tried FOSE- no luck
7. windowed mode - no luck
8. spoke to bethesda on the phone and had tech support help through email- no luck!

thats about it that i can even think of, thanks alot :)..

You have an Audigy soundcard, which begs the questions: Do you have any Creative (bloatware) running? (you said you tried a clean boot, so I'm going to assume no, but.. WTF is Creative Internet Source Filter?? There are a bunch of Creative codecs listed in your DirectShow filters) and since you are running said soundcard in Vista, have you installed Creative's Alchemy app? That is NEEDED to run DirectSound in Vista, which could very well be your issue if you haven't done it..

yes, i do have creative things on my pc because it was the software that came with the sound card i bought about 8 months ago. the one that came with the computer i replaced with this one. but i did noticed when i reinstalled Vista just recently i had something called something of a high definition sound crap. i deleted it because i had installed the creative stuff....is there something going on that im not aware of between the audio stuff? any fix?

Once you have things set up and running, you do not need any of the Creative apps running at boot. Uncheck them from MSCONFIG

Except for one. You must use Alchemy from Creative and set the game up in Alchmey to get it to work. Well, not all Vista users must do this, but you may have to.

And to answer your question, it is ALWAYS a hardware, installation, or codec issue. The game itself is at no fault at all.
Actually my game installed and played fine. I haven't encountered a non-mod related problem to date.

He was talking about problems running the game. There are many (as in 95%+ of people) who have had no problems with the game at all, you and myself being among them.

The reason any program does not work is always, 100% of the time, going to be a hardware/ additional software related problem, be it lack of required hardware, hardware that just doesn't like to work together, software resource conflicts, etc. The answer will not always be as simple as changing one thing, but sometimes more then one, IE: software conflict and an unsupported soundcard, or something like that (Not an actual problem, just made it up for the example)

@emtry53: It is very unfortunate that you find yourself in this situation, and I hope you find a solution for your problems. Just remember to take this with a grain of salt, as this may not be your first, and sure as hell wont be the last time you have software problems. It comes with the territory of computers, Mac and PC alike.

Iy looks like he fixed the problem. I understand his issues. I still get crashes, but the patch 1.7 + CASM save game mod seemed to really help my stablilty. I recommend those both. Greatly.

Like I said, I've had no problems playing as well. I was just calling him (or her) out on that gross overestimation.

I'm reporting this thread for some clean up.

Yes, ranting is against forum rules, but I'm pretty sure that so is making an attack on other users and their words.
