You...equip it. Just like medium and light. It's really simple.

Unless you are talking about power armor, you need the perk Power armor training, which you get upon completion of Operation:Anchorage or when you make it to the Citadel and you talk to Paladin Gunny, who gives it to you.,

and how do i complete it do i have to join something or go further the main quest ?
