hit TAB.

or hold TAB and use mouse to rotate the camera

Yes, you have to hold TAB and rotate the view. Unfortunately when you release TAB it reverts to rear view. Also there is a gamesetting that controls the vanity mode time so you could reduce it to a few sec if you have the CS.
