A one hit sneak insta-kill can avoid detection. Any direct attack that does not accomplish this can allow your vic to call out for help. Note that silence is of no help here - it does not silence at all, only prevents spellcasting.

Note that it is very possible to kill your target via other means besides direct attack without necessarily failing a quest or having guards called down upon you.
1. Cast a frenzy spell on your vic as he walks past a guard and let him commit 'suicide by guard'. This is not considered a hostile act on your part.
2. Cast a command humanoid spell on your vic, then nick him with a poison dagger. Since he is your temporary ally, he will not go hostile if you only hit him once. Chat with him as the poison does the killing.
3. Slip a zero weight hood of torture into your vic's inventory as he sleeps. When he awakens he will don the hood and, after a time, die.

You might want to name the hood "A hood of torture" so it goes to the top of their inventory

I don't know how far you're into the game, but if you use Sneak a lot, eventually sneaking around really starts to work well as a skill. A little too well, actually. Like you'll sneak right in front of someone or something (in front of their face), and they won't even see you.

you also should start seeing massive damaage bonuses from using sneak if you haven't already been doing so. :toughninja:

3. Slip a zero weight hood of torture into your vic's inventory as he sleeps. When he awakens he will don the hood and, after a time, die.

Hey where would I find this hood? I've looked at UESP and didn't have much luck. I've always wanted to find a zero-weight item to enchant. I tried enchanting the wrist irons I got at the beginning of the game but didn't knoe about the "A" at the beginng of the name rule. Therefore, the perps never put the irons on if I drop them in their pocket.

Here you go:

Note that necrodudes wear hoods that are black but they are called 'necromancer hoods' and unlike 'black hoods' they are not weighless.

On the PC? Download Reneers guard overhaul.

WIth this mod if ou commit a crime (attacking/killing/stealing) and you then kill all witnesses your bounty will be removed. Guards are also no longer psychic and won't instantly appear if you commit a crime. The mods also does many other things such as being able to bribe guards to leave their post, guards arresting npcs who commit crimes instead of killing them, and guards following the PC if he is sneaking.

Wouldn't play without this mod honestly.

You can also sneak an object into somebody's inventory--a poisoned apple, for instance.

Sneak up behind them and put a knife into their back or use a bow.

Some NPCs simply give you a bounty no matter what if you mode of killing is considered hostile. I've tried nixing the stable hands at the IC stables even with full chameleon and I got bounty no matter what. In such situations, the best options are the 3 Acadian suggested. Just keep in mind spell effectiveness goes down when you're wearing armor.

Heh, Buffy's version of that tactic might be to cast a drain marksman spell on herself, then pierce a vic's hand or foot with a poisoned iron arrow. She doesn't carry a dagger; the one that Lucien LaChance gave her is (thanks to Acadian) sitting at the bottom of the river in Bravil. She summons a dagger to field dress game, cut her arrows free from her victims and for cooking. She's not strong enough to fight with her fists or any melee weapons, so she doesn't.

As far as her thoughts on violence, her thinking is very simple:

The Buffy Doctrine: If you are kind to me, I will love you dearly; if you are a threat to me or my friends, I will likely kill you. :wavey:
