How to cancel a shot as a Archer?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:50 pm

Sometimes you draw your bow and realise for various reasons depending on the current situation that you dont need to fire that shot so how do you holser/put the arrow away?
Do i relly have to waste a arrow?
I play on the Pc

Welcome to the forums! :icecream:

1. If you have no enchanted charge or poison to lose, then simply shooting the arrow into the ground and grabbing it is simple enough.
2. If you have 50+ in acrobatics, you can do the dodge maneuver. With an arrow nocked, that will denock it. Takes some practice to come naturally. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Marksman#Using_a_Bow_and_Arrow
3. You can install a simple mod like Denock Arrow. http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9333

I just shoot them into the ground and pick them back up - except some arrows seem to shatter and disappear if you shoot them into the stone floor of a dungeon. Tried the dodge move a few times, but I’m not that good of a contortionist, so I gave up. A lot of my arrows have poison on then and you loose that no matter what you do. If you shoot them into the ground you also loose a point off your enchanted bow charge.

So there is no actual way to do this? Unless you mod it or do the dodge thingy?

Haven’t run across one as yet, but then I don’t spend a lot of time looking for a solution to the problem as I carry at least 250 arrows when I go adventuring. If I lose a few it doesn’t matter. I am more concerned about loosing my poisons and bow charge than that. Try the mod as Acadian suggested. Don’t know if that saves your poison and charge or not, but it might be worth a try.

They used to award new forum members with something called a ‘fishy stick’, but that was before my time and I know little about it. But welcome anyway and have a ‘fishy stick’, whatever that was.

I got pretty good with that silly dodge maneuver, but it certainly took some practice! Then I installed the Denock Arrow mod and love it; tap one button and it denocks the arrow - perfect. And it saves not only your arrow, but any poison and charge at risk as well. I limit my character's quiver to 25, so ammo management is important to her.

You can fire a magic arrow at the ground, and pick it up. I'd say, I can successfully retrieve a magic arrow with this method about 40 percent of the time. Better than zero percent n'est ce pas?

Otherwise as Acadian mentioned, the dodge move.

I am the same way. I cannot get the dodge maneuver to work. I don't have enough hands and fingers. So for years I did the same as you, and just shot the arrow into the ground. Eventually I got that Denock Arrow mod Acadian linked to. Thankfully that was one of the things Bethesda fixed in Skryim.

Wow! Only 25. I would have to run and hide behind my companion if I went into an Oblivion World with just 25 arrows. Last time I did World 7, I used 53 arrows and they were poisoned and shot from a bow enchanted with 25 Shock. And they were shot from stealth with the 3x multiplier. 95+% go down without a fuss. The only weapons I carry are two bows (occasionally one will get knocked from my hands), so my arrows are my only weapon. The least amount of arrows I've used inside an Oblivion World was 17 in World 4 when I ran across the lava to shortcut it.

Went soul trapping yesterday for Ogre only and killed a bunch with poisoned soul trap arrows. It takes a lot of ordinance to drop those guys. An hour’s excursion ate up more than 25 arrows.

I understand your 25 arrow limit as it fits your style of game play, but I would have to do something to enhance my run speed if I did that, particularly when doing Oblivion Worlds or Rockmilk Cave.

Yes, well, Acadian's Buffy has a few more tricks up her sleeve besides arrows. ;)

Buffy's a Mystic Archer. She long ago discovered that having a backup for her bow was a wise idea and has always been too weak to do more than just piss someone off with a dagger or other melee weapon. So, she turned to magic as her backup and has become very active in her guild of mages. Her magical specialties are illusion and restoration. She will normally thin groups via mind control spells, then congratulate the victor with an arrow. 25 in a quiver was a challenge until her illusion came up. She also carries a resupply of arrows attached to her mare's saddlebags so ammo discipline is normally only a real factor inside dungeons. When she gets in trouble, she normally disappears and slinks away to set up another hidden strike. The restoration comes in handy for absorb life when she has to fight underwater. She really won't use any sort of melee weapon or staff though and her fire/ice/shock is only powerful enough for cooking mud crabs.

I'd been using a denock option for a long time, and hadn't ever installed a mod specifically for that. Further investigation shows that it's a piece of COBL, which I'd installed as a pre-requisite for a house mod. If you have more than one, Wrye Bash recommends using this one, as it's part of an esp that does a lot more, and you end up using less plug-in slots.

I'll point out that http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/514-duke-patricks-combat-archery/ numbers denock amongst its arsenal of archery changes. Anyone dissatisfied with vanilla archery (as I was) should give this a try. It has become a cornerstone of my plays-through. Warning, you pretty much have to rethink bow and arrow use with this mod. The old rules won't apply any more. Takes a bit of getting used to...but worth it imo.

Speaking of quivers, DPCA's 'quiver' changes at first seemed limiting and impractical to me. Yet after growing accustomed to them I discovered that I was wrong and like the feature very much.

Total? per outing? Twenty-five arrows definitely sounds like a challenge. My Green Robe Hood off to you good sir. My master archers tend to carry a large variety of arrows. Though with them being masters, they range upwards. Glass being the lowest denominator, with maybe a handful of perfect madness/amber for must-kill-caster-in-one-shot scenarios.

They also carry a dagger or shortsword. Some potions and spells to help them run away. This allows for greater arrow variety and quantity.... I love tailoring the weapon for the scene. My archers tend to carry about 15 - 20 ish arrows per variety of arrow.

In my early days of playing Oblivion, it took one of my characters over 200 arrows to kill one Dread Zombie. That was before I started using magic weapons, and learned that a 100% weakness to poison will negate the undead's resistance to poison.

I didn't think a bow would last long enough to shoot 200 arrows. Did you have multiple bows?

No, just one bow. I think it was an elven bow at that point, possibly ebony. That character was about level 20 or so at that point, so there were good bows out there for her to use.

That's an area where I think the game is silly. I used to do archery when I was in high school. I'm quite sure that in practicing, I would shoot arrows way more than 200 times in an afternoon, and I never noticed that it wore my bow out. (It wore me out plenty; the bow had an 80 pound draw weight.) I think I may have replaced the bowstring twice on that bow in the several years I had it.

This is one of the few things that Skyrim has that Oblivion doesn't, but felt it should have been. You're just going to have to shoot it into the ground and pick the arrow back up. For those who don't know, in Skyrim, you could simply hit the "sheath" button, and it would denock the arrow.

The reason why is because the bows of the timeline of this game aren't as advanced as the ones of today. ( I'm sorry I just had to click that banana) :P
