How to Change a Companion?

Post » Mon Nov 01, 2010 6:11 pm

I found a nice companion but i wanted to change their appearance. If i change the texture with a custom one will that be enough? i noticed that the companion that i wanted to work on only had texture for the head and I am guessing uses the stock textures for the rest of the body. If i put in all the textures custom into that named folder, will it work? I dont know much about using the CS so i am hoping to learn how to do the texture change as a way to create quick custom characters. There are just four head textures in the texture folder for the character.

I wanted to try to change the texture to one that has detailed textures for everything, but was not sure if i just put all the foldes into the named texture folder for the subject character if it would work.

the textures that i hoped to use have four texture files: Body, Ears, Hands and Head, while the subjec tto be changed has four for head.

Any advice is very very very welcome. I got a new computer which finally i can run Oblivion full detail on and I am starting over after 4 years of playing one install. So i am trying to learn new things.

thanks very much for any help.

i have created a character and want to study how to get her into Oblvion...here is a working pic

An NPC is assigned textures through the race assignment, and races' textures are defined with the body data records. The easiest way to modify the body record data is with TES4Edit. If you do not want to modify the stock races, I suggest starting off by duplicating a vanilla races, and then modify the body data texture paths to point to the textures you want.

Edit: By "change appearance," do you mean make a custom race or just modify the face.

thanks Tom, that helps me understand...

in this case it is a change from a dark elf to a lightcoloured elf so both figure and face...

i am starting to see how it works, the base race is run from the vanilla stock races....and those are in the main file sets?

does a custom ie new file in the data folder automatically overwrite anything? I suppose i could create a custom race, i just had found a very nice new companion with a new race set up and wanted to try to change the character i was studying to match that new one. ...if all that makes any sense

Chracter A - the one i want to change

Character B - the format i want to use but just the appearance.... convert A to look like B :)

If you want to create a race with new textures, you should create a new folder for it in Textures\Characters. If you have already created all of the textures for it. Just use TES4Edit to copy one of the existing race records as a new record into your new plugin. Then change all of the texture paths to point to the appropriate textures. You do not have to put them in a separate folder, but I recommend it. As far as the age textures are concerned, you can just copy the age textures out of the Dark Elf folder or something.
