How do I change my Oblivion file location?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:55 am

I had read some months ago about there being complications from changing the file location of Oblivion and that there were certain stept involved. In my case, I'm changing my Oblivion location from c:\program file (x86)\bethseda softworks\oblivion to a new file like C:\games\oblivion.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the details, I have many mods installed already, and a complete re-installation of everything would literally take several days. I'm hoping for an easy copy and paste type solution. Can anyone give me any advice?

Thanks much!

If the game works where it is why mess with it? The whole changing install directory has to do with Vista/Win7 UAC controlls. If you know about UAC and how to manupulate it or turn it off then there is no problem. I have been using the defaults (except my BAIN files) ever since I installed Win7 when it came out with no problems. The suggestion I think is more for people who do not know about computers or UAC.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

Hi kai,

That certain step you're thinking of is changing the install path of Oblivion in the registry after it's moved. Sorry I'm not going to post details on a public forum as changing the registry is risky business. Check your PM's over at TESA. :)

Well there are issues with installing utility mods, and then there is the whole annoying Virtual Store. I know how to turn UAC off, and have done so many times, but now I keep it pretty much on all the time. I did try to update my old Wyre Bash, turned it off, but still got issues with it. That's probably not related, but the Virtual Store is really annoying.
