I KNOW there's going to be a stupidly easy answer to this but I'm being stupid.

I'm pressing the C button in order to cast a spell (I've played Morrowind a tiny bit before but never as a mage...) but nothing is happening. I'm not sure why...it's a basic spell and I have picked mage skills as my majors so should have the requirement to use it. It was just the basic 'spark' spell found at the first merchant you come across.

When I looked in the button options there doesn't seem to be the option to change the cast button...

By default, R readies your hands for magic, and then you click the Left mouse button to cast the spell.

Ugh thank you!! Why does it say in the prompt box then that C casts a spell?

The most recent version of the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1156182-repairing-the-cogs-of-morrowind-23/ contains an option to turn the ready hands stuff into Oblivion-style instant casting.
