How come the Irish follower, has an Irish accent?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 5:24 pm

I can find the vast amount of American accents acceptable, and robots with whatever.

But the Irssh acccent? Where the heck does that come from? It'd be fine if there were other NPC's in this Boston area with it, but no,

They call themselves Irish as well, yet, there's no chance at ALL they're actually Irish, right?

I find them HUGELY implausable and immersion breaking. :( I'm fine with entertaining things that bend the likely, explained by a paper thin rationality. But I haven't even seen the flimisiest excuse for their accent in game yet... .

Wouldn't be the first. Tenpenny and Moriarty are from across the pond, too. It's established that it happens, and it's not a big deal, we just don't have any clue what kind of state the rest of the world is.

Well Melissa (Great Khans) in New Vegas had an Australian accent. Does that make sense?

I'm surprised the two Russian brothers running the inn weren't hanged for communism charges.

Some how she retains her Irish accent but not a single person talks with the New England accent. Pak the ca matha, the people of Boston have no concept of the letter r :) Yep rough around the edges for sure.

Considering or not that governments do not exist?

Or the fact that we have glorified raiders that run around in ancient Roman clothing and crucify people?

And the BoS in Fallout 4 seems more akin to a Kingdom than anything.

There are plenty of NPCs with New England accents, though not particularly strong. We want to understand the people we're talking to.

Boston actually has a large Irish population. It wouldn't be unreasonable to think that even after 200 years, as long as they grow up in an irish accented house hold, that they would still carry those accents. Its not immersion breaking because there are still strong irish families today that still have the accent even after their ancestors may have left Ireland 100-200 years ago.

This. It's common in the US for large pockets of people retain their accents forever more. Here in Alaska we still have pockets of people who speak Russian. In some states there are Amish who still speak Dutch even though they came here in the beginning of our nation.

Why's she the only 1.

And why call her self Irish, rather than just an Irish accent?

We might be overanlyzing the accents, and holding Bethesda to a high "reality bar", but the OP has a point.

An advlt can move to a new country and retain their original accent, but young children, or children born in a new region adopt the accent of the surroundings. We have friends from the UK who have full-on accents, but their children that are born (in Canada) have no accent, or perhaps a hint of when only when speaking to their parents at home. Extend that by one more generation and the local accent is fully adopted.

If someone with a full Irish accent exists in the Wasteland it means either:

1. They relocated "here" as an advlt, or older child.

2. They were raised, and live in an area around others with similar accents, i.e. there are more in the Wasteland.

A side assumption is that if #1 is the answer, then people in Ireland feel the need to travel overseas. This suggest that things are even worse there, or there are false rumours of green pastures in North America.

Either way, the Irish accent can be explained through storylines - I just haven't seen them yet.

Not always true. The Russian settlements here in Alaska still speak Russian and when their children enter school, they must have classes to learn English. They then speak English but retain their Russian accents despite being born in the US many years after the US bought the state (then territory) This is also true for people born to many Hispanic parents or in Hispanic communities. It really depends upon the environment the kids grow up in.

Regardless however, I think it's fine to take any such liberties in a game regardless of the circumstances. And it really does help get across the actual melting pot this country is and hopefully always will be.

LOL you got it. I was stationed at Ft. Devens for about a year, way back in the late 70's, and I will never forget my first trip there. Flew into Boston, took a taxi to the bus station for a trip to the base and I asked for a ticket and the lady at the counter actually laughed at my accent. I was polite back in those days but I wanted to inform her that it was she who had the accent and that I couldn’t understand a dahnnnn woood she said :)

Yes It is. I know someone who has Irish parents that grew up in Australia but they speak with a North American accent. That's because a majority of the contemporary English accents are fake. They were put on by the aristocracy to differentiate themselves from commoners and eventually were adopted by the general population, very similar to the version of the Spanish language in Spain that features a heavy lisp because of a king hundreds of years ago.

This is also why when British people or Australians sing they have no "accent"

I'm first generation Canadian, my parents moved here from Poland. I was born here and learned both languages at the same time. I have no accent.

Your comment holds no weight.

The only possibility that the accented people exist in the commonwealth is because they came here from elsewhere.

Really, because I found a few recordings from various places around the Commonwealth and the people talk with teh Bahstun accent. The one that stands out to me is the guy from the reactor at the Boston Public Works Dam.

Well the Robots I can understand, they are programed to talk that way. Like the robots on the U.S.S. Constution speaking Engish navy speak. Like ohters have said, unless she is first generation Irish or was raised around nothing but Irish people she really should not have the accent, or at least not that heavy. But hey it is just a game right? Details, the greatness lies in the details and really this game is lacking in some of those finer details, imo.
