How come there isn't no dieases in fallout?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:07 pm

So, why isn't there?

AIDS, everything? what happened to it? did the viruses some how get wiped out with the nuclear holocaust? but if nukes didn't hit the Mojave wasteland. what happened to the viruses? STDS, etc. because its las vegas, [censored]s and stuff existed prewar, so give me some insight on how this happened.

I'm sure there are plenty of cases of disease in the storyline and in the world but when it comes to introducing it to gameplay it's an entirely different concept.

My guess is that the airborn mutated FEV that has infected just about every wastelander has made them immune to a lot of diseases and more resilient to others.

Having diseases would be hard to put into a game. Ones such as AIDs would go away overtime. Most of the Human population wiped out during the great war. People infected with a disease that will kill them won't last long. Survival of the fittest. Anyone sick in a group of survivors most likely would be left behind to keep the rest of the gorup healthy. Medications would not be around to extend the lives of those infected with something that in time will kill them. So they won't be around long enought to spread it. Large tracks of wasteland for several hundred miles between settlements would restrict travel. One settlement gets the pledge it is not likely to spread beyond that settlement. At least not in the first decades of nothing after the Great War. The years of quite darkness.

Not to say every disease is gone. Just ones that are contagious/fatal. Cancer is still around in Fallout
Spoiler
Jerico in Fallout 3 had cancer and so does Ceasar.
then again cancer is not contagious.

Fallout 2 is full of condems aka Jimmy Hats.

I'm pretty sure there were diseases in Oblivion. the Vampires disease is one I remember, but that isn't "realistic" for a Fallout game. However, I once attacked some stupid, poor peasant and contracted something unpleasant :(

I still like the NCR Poster: LOADED? Loose Women may be LOADED with disease!

Well being that you asked a double negative, your question does not compute.

Also, deseases are the quickest way to make a fun game a tedious and boring one.

Oh, and according to the forum admins/mods, sixual discussion is not permitted.

How does it make it not fun? Have you ever played Fallout with diseases?

How is the topic of "diseases" sixual? I have yet to hear anything sixual here that isn't relevant to diseases/cancer

^THIS^ Everyone who survived the bombs, who wasn't in a vault, were exposed to minute levels of FEV that was released just prior by the Enclave. I would imagine that this might have made the first generation of wastelander, and their progeny, to be much more hardy against illness/disease. Cancer will undoubtedly still be around because of the background radiation and irradiated water/food. Though I imagine that the only humanoids that are completely free from disease (that we know of) are the super mutants.

A ) as someone who watched his girlfriend slowly die of cancer at the age of 24, I can tell you it's quite the long and depressing and disgusting ordeal; there's nothing fun about it
B ) you need to read over the previous posts if you think there isn't any sixual discussion (hint: STDs)

There is nothing fun about killing, enslaving or eating people, yet it's still in the game.

Also, I'm pretty sure by "sixual discussion" that would relate to asking sixually related questions about Julie Farkas, or what you would you do to Sunny Smiles if given the chance. This is not the case. Having six can give you diseases. Having six with a random prosttute, WHICH IS AN ACTUAL FEATURE OF THE GAME, could/should have risks.

If you think having a disease hindering your character in a game is a good idea, try playing Far Cry 2. Your mind will change after like 2 hours of gamplay. It gets VERY annoying.

I disagree, those all sound like things I would enjoy. GETTING something versus GIVING something; huge difference.

Also, I have argued the sixual part already, as hypocritical as it sounds, they don't allow discussion of it on the forums. I had a thread deleted for merely mentioning the word "HJ".

I heard the malaria can be vewwy vewwy annowying. But to put it into a Fallout perspective, let's try. You contracted Mercenary's Itch! Mercenary's Itch makes your feet very itchy, and hurts to stand still, so you gain a 5% movement bonus! However, you lose 5 damage threshold when standing still, and your aim is a little off because of the damn itch is very distracting!

*goes to doctor*

*buys disease medicine*

*Disease effects are negated for 3 days*

It could work, ya know?

Or, if your survival skill is high enough, you can make a topical rubbing cure using rad-scorpion venom, pistol powder (the salts), vodka, 3 purified waters, and 2 large cooking pots. (and some anti-venom in case you bork it up.)

Heat water to a boil, add the vodka and venom (vodka sterilises and the venom kills the fungus,) let water cool to a bearable temp. Insert feet and let soak for 5 minutes. While feet are soaking, heat water in the other pot but not to a boil. Add salts from the pistol powder to the second pot of hot water. After 5 minutes of soaking has passed, take feet out of the first pot and immediately rinse them off. Now place them in the second pot to soak in the heated salt water. Let soak 15 minutes or until numbness (from the venom) abides. Lastly, you take your feet out of the second pot and let air dry (preferably in direct exposure to sunlight.)

Home made (survival skill 70) cure.

This is a role playing game, I'm role playing.

Because they would add needless complexity with no additonal play value?

The Pitt...

The Pitt's trogs were caused by mutation from rads, not disease. Though I suppose you could call it a disease as it is degenerative. It just isn't caused by a virus or bacteria.

Come to think of it though, I don't recall any character in any of the Fallouts mentioning infections in wounds. Any one else?

And if you really want a disease, go spend a night with Fisto. You can pick which one you want from him.

i really don't understand what is up with all the censoring, i mean it is a mature game right? kids should'nt be playing it and if they do have the game is because there parent approve of them of playing games with sixual/violence content right? so why would the forums beheld accountable for anything that is said here?

Whilst the game is rated 18+, the forums aren't and can be read by small children and animals. They're probably responsible for most of the posts here, even.
