How do console players chat?

Post » Thu Feb 20, 2014 8:34 pm

Will we be required to get a keyboard and mouse (if that's even possible), will headsets be allowed with toggles for group/guild/region chat or will we have to do the cumbersome typing from the controller?

It seems that communication is a huge factor in groups so having this communication run as smooth as possible is key.

Does anyone happen to know?

Party chat only, think they needed to be added like friends, never used the feature so not 100% playing killzone and bf4 there is only silence tho.

I still don't know why all MMOs don't have integrated voice chat for groups/guilds by now. Why make people use external programs... which are never used in PUGs anyway?

Submitted this as feedback during last beta, just in case somebody might make it happen.

you should try cod. It's never quiet in cod. I usually end up muting the more obnoxious ones. Ps4 supposedly has party chat now but I haven't tried it. I really considered getting ESO on ps4 just to get more use out of it but it just cries PC.

You can use a keyboard with xbox one. I would think they'd let you use that in the game.

For xbox all I know for keyboard you can buy a small comfortable one that attach to the botton of the controller through the screw holes and such and to chat you can party chat which means anyone, your friends or only people you invite can enjoy a group of people to chat with depending in your party chat settings. That's why I can't wait to play eso with my friends and family and anyone else willing to make new friends online :)

Yeah, that's what Ive heard when I asked this question. That all the console games have some kind of key board adaptation. So they would have a keyboard sitting there for typing, but everything else would be done with the controller.

Seems to me this would be kind of awkward, but like anything else I guess you would get used to it.

EQ2 has one.

WoW I think still has one.. unless they removed it while I wasn't paying attention. I never used WoW's, and they only added it because EQ2 did.

EQ2's had such a quality that none of my guilds ever needed to use a vent server.

I prefer Ventrilo myself, mostly because I have full control over it. I can make everyone the same volume, and I can do specific things to specific users. Plus, I have the final authority as admin on my server.

Even when games have it, I don't always get in it. I have very little desire to talk with randoms.

Because they're less versatile than 3rd party VOIP programs.

With a 3rd party app, you can separate and organize your chat rooms. Players from other guilds who may be allied with your guild can join in on conversations. Guildmates on an alt that are representing a different guild can still chat. You don't have to be logged into the game to chat (I'll do this... I'll be out of game doing something else until everybody shows up for a raid etc..). If you drop connection from the game, or the game crashes, you can still speak to your group/guildmates to keep them informed of your status. Administrative tools are a must too.

And not to mention, the game servers don't need to expend resources and energy to keep a million users chatting over VOIP.

That all being said... I prefer to use Mumble myself.

My assumption is that on the Xbox One you'll have a general group voice chat when grouping, party chat if you want to just use that and keyboard for everything outside of that.

Because most of the playerbase would just ignore it and keep using TS.

See for example Planetside 2 has a nice chat feature, yet almost every outfit uses a TS channel.

Voice chat is something I don't use with strangers in-game. At my age, and with the world the way it is, I don't want to find I am chatting to kids/teens 40+ years younger than I am. I'd rather play safe than sorry!

I am not a huge fan of voice chat programs either. They have their uses, one cannot deny that. There is no way to be as organized or able to quickly adapt to situations than voice chat. But there tends to be huge drawbacks as well.

They are terrible for game immersion. I have no issue using Raidcall or Mumble or Vent etc while doing a guild activity like a hard dungeon, or a raid. But then I shut it off. Some people like to hang out in it all day and just gossip or talk about mindless real life issues. I respect their interest in doing so, but that isn't for me. I like the game. I enjoy the sights and the sounds of the environment. I play an RPG game to get away from real life, not to chat about it :)

The other drawback that I have seen several times is this: Guilds that use voice chat a lot tend to ignore the people that aren't in it. Everything tends to get planned around voice chat and not even mentioned in normal guild chat. It can drive a wedge in between people who do and don't use it.

But all that being said, you can pretty easily find a mature guild with similar interests and age brackets. So it is very possible to voice chat with people your own age while gaming.

They shout really loud at the TV screen in the hopes the other players can hear them.
