How could FONV have been more real ?

Post » Wed Oct 07, 2009 8:02 am

:fallout: its pretty well established on the internet the lack of fun new vegas is after the first 2 or 3 playthru's, the threads on this forum alone, speak for themselves, its not a big secret the game doesn't have a lot of replayability, its fun for a while, but its kinda like a small maze, once you have it all figured out which doesn't take long, it gets boring fast. i haven't seen many threads on how exciting the game is, except from newbies playing the game for the first time.

So I'm a newbie? I love FNV, and have played three playthroughs, and I still am not bored.

And again, Fallout 3 was a boring, droll, unimaginitive pile with obnoxious repetitive combat, terrible writing, and tries too hard to be epic. But hey, that's my opinion.

Seriously though, we've answered every one of your accusations and all you can say in return is that "we are boring newbies." And you're throwing in the statistic fallacy + sweeping commentary again?

That's just pure gold.

Care to provide your sources on this uh, 'well established' point of yours?

the threads on this forum alone, speak for themselves, its not a big secret the game doesn't have a lot of replayability

Beg your pardon? I'd say those complaining about replayability far less outweight the complaints on the Fallout 3 forum :spotted owl:

its fun for a while, but its kinda like a small maze, once you have it all figured out which doesn't take long, it gets boring fast. i haven't seen many threads on how exciting the game is, except from newbies playing the game for the first time.

So we have to make a thread establishing our excitement of how fun the game is? Because I see every 'Thank you' and 'I love this game' thread fill with alot of respectable regulars, and newer users alike exclaim their joy of Fallout: New Vegas and their preference to New Vegas over 3, though they do enjoy both.

On a side note, Your claims of Fallout 3 being non-repetetive are lies. I know "Whoop, better avoid that spot, that's where an ambush spawns." or "Oh this spot spawns a scripted vertibird." Face it, Fallout 3 is just as repetetive and scripted as Fallout:New Vegas. But at least New Vegas goes out of it's way to explain the hows and whys more than 3 does.

I don't quite get this compulsive need that people who are bored with the game have - to state their opinion over and over again across threads...
If they are bored with NV why are they even here? Why not go on the F3 forums and wax poetic about its awesomeness there?

I suspect... the gents doth protest too much... :whistling:

Anyway, sign me among the people who are still having fun on their third playthrough.

Mods are asleep.

West, I've read very intelligent, well reasoned posts from you. But if I see a medium sized paragraph from you and a quick scan contains the words 'boring' and 'empty', I just skip it, because I've already read it 100 times. Everyone has. Why do you persist in your 'NV is boring' posts (unless you just want attention) when you are more than capable of contributing here in a more thoughtful way?

If you are really being serious, Google the expression 'tunnel vision'. You are by no means the only person here suffering from this affliction, but you have an acute case.

Also, while you are Googling, check out 'Objective' and 'Subjective'.

And you have my axe! :teehee:

Also, West, post facts and post where they are from, post links and quotes from other people that actually state "New Vegas is boring after 2 playthroughs." instead of just looping, and looping.

getting back on topic, this is a few things that would of made it more real...
:snoring:
1 a lot more activity from the various factions, its not very realistic that none of them go anywhere or patrol.

2 not the same gecko running across the road near primm or the same two bark scorpions in hidden valley or nipton.

3 some higher tech factions, notice only the fiends have high tech weapons, ncr and ceasers legion poorly armed.

4 random events and enouncters, can you believe there isn't one random encounter/event.

5 significantly more settlements and other buildings on the map, there's not really many, where is this rebuilding and recivilization ?

6 a lot better terrain and environment, you're out in the open wherever you are, no good hiding spots anywhere really.

7 not so many tents and one room shacks on the map, they did that to save time obviously.

8 the factions actually engaging each other on the map randomely, it would add some realism.

9 much better well armed enemies especially as the you level up.

10 random enemy spawns, its not very realistic with the exact same enemies spawn in the exact same locations every single time.

Same thing? And they do engage each other. I've seen NCR and Ceasers battling it out numerous times when patrols meet.

Explained in game. Fiends ripped off a weapons caravan. Not to mention the energy weapons they have are pretty poor. NCR is poorly supplied and the Legion refuses to use any high tech stuff.

4 random events and enouncters, can you believe there isn't one random encounter/event.

Not something i miss to be honest.

As has been pointed out, there's more settlements than in Fallout 3 and they make more sense than in Fallout 3 too. There's farms, two working power plants, factories, and beauacracy etc.

6 a lot better terrain and environment, you're out in the open wherever you are, no good hiding spots anywhere really.

It's a desert. What are you expecting? A little forest? Some waist high grass?

7 not so many tents and one room shacks on the map, they did that to save time obviously.

Yes, the people of the mojave did it to save time. After all, it's quicker to put up a tent than manufacture building materials and construct a brick or concrete building.

9 much better well armed enemies especially as the you level up.

You mean like Oblivion where bandits where running around in Daedric armour?

BTW, excellent job on avoiding responding to anyones counter arguements.

Weapons that don't degrade in 5 seconds - by far the dumbest feature of this/these game(s) IMO. Sure have weapon maintenance / cleaning / repairs, but it's just silly how quickly they break down. Okay so you find a gun in crappy condition, yes it shouldn't function well. In fact they should add jamming while firing to the mix, not just when reloading. How about weapon cleaning kits that you can use regularly so that you don't need to do repairs so often.

I'd also like a different optional difficulty mode for combat. Enemies die faster when getting shot but so do you. Difficulty settings shouldn't just be making enemies harder to kill. Realism is not taking 100 shots to die. Obviously the game would be extremely difficult if bullets damaged you realistically, but closer to reality would be nice as a game setting at least.

Anyway, this thread went downhill fast. I've played the game a bunch now and still enjoy it a lot. I don't always do all the missions each time, just pissing around with different aspects of the game is enjoyable.

Throwing knives should be able to be retrieved or made. The combat knife should also be able to be thrown. Why hasn't Obsidian fixed or added this feature properly yet, it's been months. This includes the throwing hatchet.

Real, well, real as in making sense?
World: Realistic and well explained.
Combat: The game is an RPG, although it used FPS mechanics, the weapons are stat-based, so unloading a lot of bullets into an enemy is proper in an RPG if you are using a low level weapon against a high level enemy. This aint CoD where you can kill everyone with a pistol. It makes sense as RPG combat.
Story: Pretty much everything in the story is well explained and reasonable. The only real problem is the lack of insight on Legion society, a DLC set in Legion territory could rectify this.
