How could they not know? (Spoiler)

So Vault 81...

I think there are two big plotholes that maybe someone can explain to me.

Spoiler
They had mole rats down in the secret part just from the beginning and the scientist didn't even freaked out about them. They where just curious about them beeing genetically manipulated by vault tec.

So mole rats existed actually before the bombs fell and the level of "suprise" of the scientists indicates that they where just normal animals everyone knew about.

What an immersion breaker... I would find it more believeable that they got lab rats and mutated them than having the molerats prewar.

And while we are at the secret part of the vault... So noone had the slightest idea that there might be something more in Vault 81? Because elevator doors are build into walls just for decoration? So vault-tec build a freaking secret door in the reactor room and than put an elevator directly at the main entrance?

Yeah, noone will ever wonder what's down there...

A lot of the crazy [censored] which exists in the Wasteland was created by the Enclave Pre-War.

See Deathclaws.

And Overseer MacNamara knew about the hidden part of the Vault. All Overseers do. It's just, well, they don't want anyone going there for all the horrible diseases and devastating effect on morale it would bring.

Spoiler
you got it wrong. those tests were recent and were not conducted 200 years ago or even over the course of 200 years. at some point after mole rats mutated from whatever the secret side moved from the development phase to animal testing trials and took what animals could be found locally. molerats borrowing all around the vault.

Actually, pre-war. The size and the reason they were in the place were two different things, and not linked.

It isn't mentioned how much different they were to the general run of the mill, buy them off the shelf natural variety, but it was obvious they were different...they may have changed since then, as well.

You do realise that they really do exist?

You got me. I didn't actually tought about actual mole rats. They just didn't pop up in my mind. (The terms "mole" and "rat" don't connect to what actual mole rats are called in my language.)

Still, there is the question why noone is suspicious of the elevator that leads directly to the secret part of the vault. And that the overseer knew about it doesn't change the fact, that there are several people in the entrance area who do see an elevator door knowing that there is no other end in the rest of the vault. Even a little child can comprehend that therefore it must lead to somewhere else.

I didn't get the sense that modern Overseers really knew.

For starters, there'd be that curiosity to go and see. Which would have been fantastic, since then they could have found the valuable, multi-purpose vaccine before it decayed into being unusable.

One of the few examples of a Vault-Tec experiment actually succeeding...and still failing.

Yeah, that really should have been behind a secret panel as well.
