[Tutorial] How to Create Beautiful Characters

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:47 am

All I see are pictures of women, so I'm guessing the article is written almost exclusively with female characters in mind. What about people that want to create good looking male characters?

Good article. I wish there was a slider for briast size ; )

I know ;) but there is a mod for this on the SkyrimNexus, those modders are awesome.

Interesting thing I discovered about people's perceptions of beauty: once it's outside a certain range of being 'too alien' to be considered human, the shape of the head no longer impacts the viewer's perception of whether or not the character is beautiful. Instead, we seem to judge beast races the way we judge animals and use a different scale. If it's close to being human but the proportions are off, then it's 'ugly'. Orcs being the prime example. No one really seems to have a problem with the way Argonians or Khajiit look, but a lot of people don't like the way Orcs look, even though the differences between Orcs and humans are relatively small.

the uncanny valley, humans like things more the more it looks human, to an extent, then it drops into the uncanny valley (things like clowns [no, i dont think clowns are human  ], androids, and things that are almost human but seem off)

How did you do it, mine ends up looking like an old red-headed hag :(

Just pick your favourite pre-set and work with the different sliders. It may take a while, but High Elven women can have stunning looks even without a mod. You should do most of the changes watching the profile of of your character instead of the front view. Nose,Eyes,Chin and Lips are probably the most crucial things to watch to get a good looking character.

My characters all looked kinda goofy until I started out by putting ALL of the sliders in the middle.

Then you have a "normal" face that you can tweak how you want.

Some people...

I don't know if it's because I'm artistic or particular, but I was very meticulous about how my kajiit turned out. And well... He turned out beautiful... In an mysterious evil way. It's funny because I actually stop what I'm doing and just randomly look at him in different lighting.

He turned out to look more cat like then any kajiit that roams skyrim. The only thing that I wish I could redo is make his body a little bigger, because he looks really awesome but I made him a tad too skinny.

The trick with getting kajiits to look more cat like is the nose. If you bring that out quite a bit, it actually looks really good. I also used the beards to make him look to have a fuller face, then used the long hair to give more depth. Then used colors to blend open spots between the hair and beard to give it a more natural flow. With a few tweeks here and there you can have a really sleek looking kajiit!

Come on Liono!

Well, the principles are the same, regardless of the six. You don't do anything different, you just have a different goal. I don't really talk much about female vs. male faces in any case. It's just the screenshots happen to be of female characters. Some day I'll add some male characters to provide some balance.

the uncanny valley, humans like things more the more it looks human, to an extent, then it drops into the uncanny valley (things like clowns [no, i dont think clowns are human  ], androids, and things that are almost human but seem off)

My mother collects dolls. Ugh. I couldn't sleep in that house.

Make a Katy Perry tutorial and I'll love You forever.

I'm sure the celebrity faces will show up in force on Skyrim Nexus any day now. In the meantime, find a good profile, a good direct shot, and a 3/4 and it shouldn't be too difficult, existing presets permitting.

...Come on Liono!

There must be somebody working on a Thundercats total conversion!

Took your advice on figuring out what I really think is attractive and realized I love the Asian look. Based on my http://abstract.desktopnexus.com/wallpaper/55760/ and that your tutorial said I could get the roundest look from a Breton, here's my new character http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/630733235511013314/0E36694FA478A125068CC4080303A3721BC9C1C8/.

OP you should add this mod to your list:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2812

It's the best out of all the face mods imo.

I can vouch for that. But with the less make up version.

Given the limitations of the existing presets, I'm impressed. :tops:

Definitely much more Asian than http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3076. I confess I gave up toward the end and just focused on making her look good. [Edit: Also based on a Breton.]

Thanks! Yea without being able to control the size or slant of the eyes it's hard. Best I could do was the eye/brow debth and the cheekbone height to accentuate the "flatness" of the http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/630733235511014582/F611ECF36EE82C8B2978F447F491A3E0F8A7E514/. I also tried to make the forhead/brow/eyes wider than the chin which you can tell a little better in-game. The picture made her face look narrower than I think it really is.

I like your style.

People can be pretty without being perfect. My current character won't grace the covers of any fashion magazines but she's a http://www.truancyfactory.com/images/misc/elsbet_front.png in my eyes. I like to see http://www.truancyfactory.com/images/misc/elsbet_profile.png when I look at a face.
