How do I customise the controls?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 3:00 am

I don't use WASD, I was playing computer games 15 hours a day a decade before that concept was invented, and I went with 'Q' and 'E' for strafing left and right, 'W' for moving backwards and 'RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON' for moving forward.

Now, I can't seem to reassign the 'E' button to not 'TAKE' from lootable containers, which means that if I strafe right while looking at a lootable container, be it a corpse or a cabinet, I either pick up the pencil, mug or clipboard, and boy do I have a lot of those right now, or attach the corpse to my charachter to move it around, which has led to death in about 98% of the encounters.

So, how do I detach 'TAKE' from button 'E' and reassign it to 'X' where I have 'ACTION' assigned?

You can't. Bethesda has been using a hard-binding control scheme with many of their interfaces. They pretty much don't expect you to change anything major like WASD. I had a similar problem back when I played skyrim and I was using ESDF for movement, but E was hardbound to return to your position on the map making it impossible for me to scroll the map up because it would snap back to me. This is the reason I switched to WASD in all of my gaming.

However since then I've discovered that you can program your keyboard using AutoHotkey and I had been using that to circumvent a lot of games using hardcasting before I got my programmable G13 keypad. I could probably write you a program to switch your E and X key in a couple of seconds.

Is that just for the movement keys? I changed the default VATS key back to V which is what I'm accustomed to.

From what I've seen so far it's only game-breaking if you try to remap the E key because it's the only hard-bound key that is used outside of the menus. V is not hard-bound anywhere I don't think.

Yeah? Go for it, I would apreaciate it, I'm beat after having already spent two hours fixing the mouse movement bug, which Beth somehow managed to RE-introduce after having fixed the same problem years ago for Skyrim. 'E' and 'X' needs so somehow be combined, 'E' needs to be reassigned to another key, say 'L' so I can then re-re-assign 'L' to use in place of 'E' for left strafe.

Jesus Christ... isn't this 2016? I would expect problems like this, and encountered them 20 years ago because back then no-one thought that reassigning keys in a game would be something that a human being would possibly do. But in 2016!!!

"R" is also another key that can't really be moved. Also try to use the keyboard and mouse while building a house... grrr now thats frustrating.

Seriously Bethesda you guys are about as big as it gets when it comes to PC gaming, for the life of me I don't know why you can't get ONE guy to sit down and play on the PC and have him offer feedback.

AWESOME I'm gonna be rich!

On topic: Yes I agree in this day and age a PC games should 100% have 100% rebind-able keys.

The image you posted is of the in-game control settings. This does not allow you to change any of the hard-bound menu interface keys, such as when you are accessing a terminal or messing with your pip-boy.

@ Vresiberba I made a quick .exe and put it up here: /index.php?file_id=00603004768690391530

(because of the way the forums are set up you have to copy and paste it to your address bar)

It's pretty simple, as soon as you run it your 'x' and 'e' keys will be switched around. Shift + Pause will toggle this on and off. If you want to completely stop AHK from running you'll have to go into task manager -> processes.

You'll have to be a bit more specific and a lot less confusing for this. You want your 'E' key to simultaneously act as both 'E' and 'X'? From what I've seen, 'X' is not hardbound anywhere

Yes, I use 'X' to 'ACTIVATE' which picks up a mug if it stands ontop of a cabinet. 'E' does the same if it's inside the cabinet and therefore needs to be merged with 'X', while the physical 'E' button needs to be remapped to something else that isn't hardcoded to that button. So when I press 'E', the game sees, for instance 'L', and 'L' is mapped in-game to right strafe and 'TAKE' and 'E' both are mapped to key 'X'.

I used something similar in Dead Space, where, of course the right mouse button couldn't be re-assigned. So I used Autohotkey to remap the right mouse button, which was hard coded, elsewhere and then moved the key I assigned 'MOVE FORWARD' to the right mouse button. But that was years ago, I spent hours doin that, and... right now, I just want to play the game.

Forums are very crappy with notifications. I'm making a tutorial right now on this easily. The file I sent you previously should be able to do that if you just map your interact key to 'E' though, I think (by pressing X) because the interact key is not hardbound.

I thought I was able to get around this piss-poor 'oversight' by hacking my keyboard registry. It was working fantastically until I came to building my own base and found I could then not navigate through the workshop options.
(Even when I reverse mapped WASD to the Directional Keys, just refuses to work.)

This is absolutely ludicrous. I'm seriously pissed off about it.
Why do we have to do any of this garbage at all?!

What sort of testing did Bethesda do when they made this port?

This needs to be fixed. Immediately. Not something that will "come out soon". NOW! This is stopping people from playing the game properly.

I've been using the directional and number pad keys for over 20 years. How do I just "unlearn" two decades of playing FPS titles on PC with a completely new setup?

I refuse to "have" to learn to walk again, simply because Bethesda were too lazy to implement proper keybinds in the PC edition.

This is the sort of garbage I expect from EA and Activision - not Bethesda.
