How to defend yourself from the Deathclaws?

Post » Sat Feb 13, 2016 11:04 pm

They literally rushed through 1.5 of my rooms in 5 seconds killing 10 dwellers. The rooms have 6 dwellers each with 16 dmg+ weapons on lvl 40+.

How should I prepare for them? Tips and tricks? Can't keep healing 6 dwellers at the same time all day long.

I am not sure why they are devasting so many people ... I had to make a minor adjustment to my workers at the top of my vault but haven't had any issues since then. My current configuration:

2 Dwellers on Vault entrance guard duty (they currently have one flame thrower and one plasma rifle) ... both are Level 50 and have 10's in all SPECIAL attributes ... one has Power Armor the other Heavy Armor

6 Dwellers in Super Reactor right after entrance ... all are Level 50 with 10's in all SPECIAL attributes ... one has Power Armor, others are Sports Fan armor (+4 Strength) or Officer Fatigues (+5 Strength) ... their weapons are a mixture of various high teens damage with one Minigun in the 20's

6 Dwellers in Super Reactor on Level 2 below entrance ... all are Level 50 with 10's in all SPECIAL attributes ... all are using the Sports Fan armor or Officer Fatigues ... various weapons in the high teens ... I also moved my Mr Handy to this room

The last attack I experienced had 6 Deathclaws ... some made it down to the lower room before they were exterminated ... none of my dwellers died or required healing during the attack (I did need to STIM them afterwards though) ... hope that is helpful

How exactly are people getting all these >10-damage guns? I'm lucky if I get a good run of enhanced sawed off shottys on a foray. It's really rare to see a >10-damage gun. And my one and only time that my dweller survived long enough to get to the Depot (and that's with one resurrect after she ran out of paks) got me... nothing. Except some piddly amount of caps and useless XP because she's one of my only two L50s. If these monsters are mowing through L50s like they're nothing, then screw this game.

Exploration ... I have 50 dwellers on exploration rotation ... I send them out with 25 STIMs each and leave them out until they run out ... then I recall them ... I get anywhere from a couple to half a dozen +10 or better weapons per person (if they stay out at least 60 hours) ... also, any weapon will be better than hands so this is the best way to insure that all your dwellers are armed (and just upgrade your weapons as your cache of good ones improves) ... send out your explorers with high endurance and as good a weapon as you have access to (if your goal is time) ... high luck only seems to help on Caps (but if you are needing Caps then send out high luck and high endurance) ... if you are having problems staying out 60 hours (National Guard Depot) then shoot for 20 (gas station) or 30 (diner) since both of those events can give two rare items

I don't want to say something untrue but in my exeroence the drops scale with the population of your vault. As soon as I hit 100 I started to get a bunch of better stuff. At around 140 I got my first power armor and a few of Fat Mans

Well , I Have Two storage rooms on the first floor , place high level dwellers in there with weapons that do 15+ or higher damage. By the time they get to level two you can pretty much take them down

with low level dwellers.

Can Deathclaws attack anytime, or is there a scripted limit on when they can begin? Because I have nothing better than combat armor, 17 dwellers and literally five weapons.

..because if it's anytime, I'm going to go hide in the darkest corner of the vault and pee myself.

I suppose it is possible.

I stopped playing on my iPhone and started playing the Android version on my PC with an emulator. I don't even have the app on my phone anymore.

Right now I am sitting at 40 dwellers, a mixture of crap and decent weapons, and haven't seen any deathclaws. I didn't even see any molerats until I had around 30 dwellers.

That is exactly what my plan is! But I have been training all of level 50's for weeks and I'm just about there. I know it's a great solution, but I can't imagine just starting out, and having these guys rip through. I used to think the raiders were bad lmao

My impression from reading some of the comments is that Deathclaws scale ... it is unclear what the exact scaling factor is though (number of dwellers, size of vault, etc) ... for some this scaling factor has been devastating ... for others who grew their vaults differently (often slower) the impact has not been as great ... I think one thing people forget about this game is that they assume since it is so simple and a mobile game that there is no strategy to it ... that does not appear to be the case ... the lunchboxes also present a danger as they can let you grow too fast which is dangerous to your vault's health ... some notable strategies that worked for me or that I developed in hindsight:

Grow slowly but steadily up to 100 dwellers (so that you have access to all the rooms) ... don't grow arbitrarily but try to align growth to objectives (don't have babies unless an objective asks for it) ... this is the strategy I pursued

from 100 to 200 dwellers grow as slow as possible (only expand when you have objectives that require it)

try to buff your dwellers as much as possible ... although it is unclear the exact interaction with SPECIAL stats they do matter (and they do scale above 10 ... very advantageous for rushing rooms) ... keep the bare minimum in resource production so you are not close to the limit bar that will turn something red ... keep the rest in SPECIAL rooms ... align the stats to your strategy ... if you will be exploring then get endurance high (for health) and luck high (for Caps) ... if you want to build resources then align the stats to the resource you want to build ... note that you get caps everytime a stat goes up so it can add up when you have 100+ dwellers raising stats

Explore, explore, explore ... this is really the only way (short of lunchboxes) to get gear and caps quickly ... I didn't do as much of this as I should have (I always had a few explorers out but I didn't take out big bunches until late) ... the 20 hour run is reasonable very early and the 30 hour run once you get higher level and higher endurance explorers ... the 60 hour run needs good STIM production and good explorers/weapons

Also, beware of the level 2 and level 3 rooms ... fires, radroaches, and molerats all scale with the room ... a level 1 room is easily controlled ... level 2 gets tougher ... level 3 requires healthy dwellers (and well armed ones) to control the situation quickly (as an uncontrolled situation spreads from room to room rather rapidly)

I think some folks may have expanded too quickly (the "rushers") and there were too many weak dwellers to withstand the Deathclaws ... the "turtlers" like myself seem to have been less affected ... so in its current configuration this game seems to favor the "turtler" over the "rusher"

Welp. Lost ten dwellers in a minute to deathclaws. Can't get the good gun dwellers to the rooms they're in fast enough. Not one of the 'Claws has fallen dead. They battered through my level 3 vault door like it wasn't even there. Oh, and it happened not even five minutes in first starting the game up after patching.

Game uninstalled. F this. First, only, and last deathclaw attack. Whoever actually likes this happening I am convinced is a masochist.

Yaknow that whole "Boredom/Frustration" meter that Todd talked about once? This game has gone from the Boredom side right past the fun medium into Frustration without even stopping.

From what I can tell (granted I'm only like lvl 14 dwellers) things seem to scale with time. I don't expect deathclaws anytime soon.

I have one elevator in the center and my top 2 levels are filled with all my armor and guns. So let them come. They'll have to funnel into one elevator and meet 2 levels of death. Bring it on.

I know what you mean. The first Deathclaw attack not only killed a bunch of Dwellers but it killed my enjoyment of the game. I had 20 Dwellers out in the Wasteland, once they are back in, I will stop playing too. However, I am not planning on deleting the app with the hopes they will fix this ridiculously OP event.

It would be interesting to try and correlate if there is any connection between the vaults where this is devastating and the ones where this is a minor inconvenience. I just had my second attack since restructuring my vault (4th overall) and there were no issues again (no deaths and they were vanquished on the first room on the second level):

I have been playing since the original launch

my vault has 200 dwellers

about 100 or so are level 40 or higher

I have no weapons with less than 10 damage (the weapons for folks near the Deathclaw attack are generally between 15-20)

my top two rooms are Level 3 nuclear reactors with 6 dwellers each

my entrance has 2 permanent guards (now)

all dwellers on the top 2 levels are maxed at level 50

all dwellers in the vault are at max SPECIAL (10 for each SPECIAL attribute)

all dwellers in the top two levels are wearing Strength enhancing outfits (all but three are +4 or +5)

I have 50 explorers and am now gearing up to purge all weapons less than 12 damage

Molerats are only a threat when they pop up in one of my Level 3 rooms and if I have dwellers less than level 20 in that room

How does this compare to the people who are being massacred or to others who have this new threat under control now?

Well, I haven't tried it yet since the deathclaw update, but just on a general "how cool is your vault" basis..... I stopped growing at 90 people because all the micromanagement was getting annoying (I use my daily delete on pregnancy objective). I've got three guys who go explore, they've got high stats, but not all 10's. No dwellers have all 10's, actually. I've got a handful (less than 10) weapons in the 15-17 damage range, most people are using 6-9dmg guns. Found two suits of power armor so far, most dwellers are wearing regular clothes, upgrading to the medium level ones. Not sure how old the vault is, but it's not from launch week.

ARE YOU :swear: ING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!

I thought maybe I could salvage it and put it into a sleep state and not touch it again 'til next update in the probably vain hope that the devs will nerf the deathclaws. I resurrect who I can afford to (the coffer was a bit low due to some expansions before the patch even dropped), put my topmost dwellers with my topmost guns in the front door. I try to rush to replenish my ravaged supplies. Miraculously, no incidents occur from the rushes. And then guess what happens?

ANOTHER DEATHCLAW ATTACK. NOT EVEN FIVE MINUTES LATER. :swear:

I thought I was being paranoid in madly rushing to get everything back in order. But apparently deathclaws every five minutes is a thing now. I managed to exit out before they got to my practically nonexistent L3 vault door again, but still... WHAT THE HELL.

Hey Devs:

Had to change a few rooms up definitely recommend having two first levels of storage full of 10+ 50 vault dwellers. Still watch there health they go down quicker than you think also dont let your game open for long they come alot. Make heaps of stims and know they jump from room to room very quickly.

Definitely needs changing my guards should at least follow them.

I have 70 dwellers, one with rusty gauss, one flamer & power armor at the door. But the rest shotguns and rifles mostly. Unless I 24 hour grind I am not going to get 10s in the SPECIALs, and now 50% my vault is dead and dying of radiation. I don't see primo weapon do any great deal of damage and I have heard nothing but poor reviews for Mr. Hadys so I am not buying lunchboxes.

Hopefully scaled damage will be brought up in a future update.

I'd like a little more boredom please. I counted in the last hour while I tried working with a new vault.

6 molerat attacks

3 raider attacks

2 fires

1 rad roach attack

All of these unprovoked with no radio station and no one outside while I tried to get my medical supplies together to prep someone to go search. Yes, it came like clockwork every 5 minutes.

I've even stopped upgrading my rooms at all except when a mission wants me to, and then I simply build a cheap room to upgrade and then sell it repeatedly.

I honestly don't think this can possibly be intentional, something must be broken with the encounter rate as it wasn't even this bad 2 days ago when I started the first vault. It just spirals out of control.

we asked for it and we got it! boy howdy, did we! I must admit they brought back the sheer terror factor with this update. the raids and additonal threats from inside have made it imperative to arm every one VERY well and of course now we cannot be so lax about the entrance. I ma enjoyinh this though I do pine a bit for the peace and quiet pre-update. I had to call back half my explorers (who had the best weapons and stats) to help populate the 1st level. everyone else having fun??? regards, T

Don't know, Telemancer, they've not yet been seen in my vault. If they're worse than molerats are at current than I don't know how I could possibly handle them. Molerats are bullet sponges even in a level 1 room and the fact that they arbitrarily do roomwide damage is complete BS.

I'm getting Deathclaw attacks after every 3 dwellers I bring in from the wasteland. I just sent them out to their deaths anyway, but you have to clear the Radio rooms.

My 1st floor is Vault Entrance, Elevator to nowhere, Super Reactor (Triple), Radio Room (double), Elevator down.

Each room is full with dwellers in power armors, with the best weapons I have. Deathclaws storm in, rend thru the rooms but the last ones die in the Radio Room. I lose my lowest level dwellers if I don't stim them during combat, so I make sure to have them selected before the Deathclaws get there.
