Spoiler
It's said in Trouble in the Homefront that the Vault 101 happened to have been opened roughly 19 years ago. I suppose James was accepted because they needed a medic. But shortly after, I supposed some of the Vault 101 who went outside must have run into supermutants or other enemies and got themselves killed since the Vault was closed again and all evidence destroyed.

Um... Shouldn't this be in the 'Cheats, Hints and SPOILERS' section of the forums... Or at least have tags.

This is the lore forum... Spoilers are expected as we debate and discuss the history and background facts on the ground.

But they already have that other medic. What about the other medic? Do you think he also came to the vault or was born there.

I think yes, he was from Rivet City, but as for how and why he got into 101, I don't know.

I am, however, curious as to who the 'Brotherhood of Steel friend' Moriarty speaks of is. That guy might be a key to the answer. But I'm just speculating, and wildly at that. :P

From what I gathered at one time the overseer opened the vault and sent people out to explore the area, the Over Seer's Terminal mentions finding Megaton. While the Vault was open James manages to negotiate a trade, he and you get in and they get a very skilled doctor, on the condition that James plays along with the whole "Nobody has ever left" thing.

The Brotherhood of Steel friend could be assumed to be Star Paladin Cross, as she mentions working with James.

I am less interested in how he got in and more interested in his Origins as most of the info about him is pretty recent (e.g. info on him working on PP before entering the Vault). I was pretty dissapointed in the character development of James.

If you restart the game and look at scenery when your born, its Rivet city, So it goes to show your dad was prob just born and raised in Rivet City and you were born in rivet City.

Doctor Li is among one of the biggest relations to Rivet City.

I thougth it was the jefferson memorial, after you were born the gived up the project and dr li went to rivet city and you father with you to vault 101, i'm not sure but i might been thinking that you father was born in vault 101, since he atleast should have some connections with the overseer there ... according to the log he sended you dad and mum to discover the outside world, but not sure how they did came up with the waterproject .... maybe you father runned into dr li during one of his travels ... that no-one enters and leaves vault 101, is such bullocks and just propaganda ....

Actually you were born in the sublevels of the jefferson memorial. Look around and you can find the room you were born in.

I swear when you're going through one of the age transitions in the Vault, you hear something like; "We need a doctor not a dentist" from the Overseer. Not that I'm suggesting his father is a dentist, but maybe the Overseer was infact looking for a doctor or a medic.

See the people who are suggesting that Dad is from Rivet City...

I want to ask. Have you played this game?

There is currently ZERO explanation about Dad's origins and he is NOT from Rivet City. That much is firmly established when you do the quests in and around Rivet City.
Talking to its various inhabitants you discover Dr Li and her team "arrived" in Rivet City right after PP failed and Dad fled to the Vault 101.

They werent and are not natives. Thats why the mental doctor who lived in the Rivet City Bow hated Dr Li; because she was an outsider who was so trusted.
So none of them were from Rivet.

Sorry.

EDIT:
And about where you are born.

It is clearly a room in the Jefferson Memorial building basemant, you find it when Dad has you doing his stupid errands.

EDIT2:
As to how Dad got into the Vault if you read the Overseers computer you find that around the time Dad turned up the Vault had ambassadors in Megaton. Old Mrs Palmer I think was one of them, not sure tho.

She definately remembers his arrival.

He could have gotten in through them.

But as is the problem with a lot of the writing in this game its very unclear. The player is left to plug in a lot of gapes with extraneous knowledge and suppositions and assumptions.

I dont see any ambiguity, vault tec hired him for the job. "residents" are little more than guinea pigs, between all the other vaults doing various drugging experiments, how hard is it to give everyone a dose of suggestion juice and tell them that the new overseer, doctor, guard etc has been there all along or the old one never existed? vault 92 in the upper right hand of the map makes it real easy to put together.

I think you might be right as I remember having conversations with the NPCs that worked on PP and they were talking about how after you were born James left.

Rivet City wasn't a major settlement at the time you were born.

From the overseers records in vault 101, there was an implication that Lucas Simms (the sheriff in megaton) might have been from the vault also. The leader of the scout team was referred to as Simms. There is also a Vault-tec bobblehead in Lucas' house (doesn't really prove anything, but it is a rare bit of pre-war stuff for just anyone to be having around).

I remember something about the Overseer stating he let James in because they needed a doctor. Which is why, after you return to the Vault, they're forced to rely on a Mr. Handy to tend their ailments.

This is how i pieced things together.

I want to ask. Have you played this game?

EDIT:

#1:You were born in a room in the Jefferson Memorial building basemant,
"you find it when Dad has you doing his stupid errands."
I found it as well!

#2:Simms is likely a former vault 101 dweller!

#3:Star paladin cross was a bodyguard to your father during Project-P and was stated saying so!

#4:Your mother was a scientist working or Project-P.

#5:Old lady palmer was the "leader" of the scout party and left simms and another person to get chummy with the locals! This is stated in the overseeers terminal before you leave the vault the first time!

#6:I have found nothing to suggest where james or his wife came from.., who there family's were or there history!

#7:It's likely your father promised to work as a doctor on a few terms,
1: he will not have kids with any of the vault dwellers (this is likely, as the overseer is trying to keep mutations out of his "Pure" human gene pool)
2:He would uphold the lie of the vault always being sealed!
3:likely he promised that you would never have a kid, as you did come from the outside!
4:He would never leave the vault once in!

#8:I did hear that "we need a doctor not a dentist! You've failed to live up to my expectations!" as well, this is likely just a memory fragment of your younger days, and is nothing more them the overseer being his [censored] self.

#9:Doc Li went to rivet after Project-P was taken over by mutants, and your father left cause of the depression of losing your mother!

If you're referring to the bits of conversation you can hear during the tutorial when it skips ahead to different parts of your childhood, I'm pretty sure the Overseer was saying 'We needed a doctor, not a scientist!' There's also a part where you can hear the Overseer berating James over wasting his time with 'experiments' - related to PP, obviously.

Edit - As for James' origins, I don't think they ever explicitly state them. But it's safe to assume he showed up with Dr. Li in Rivet City from wherever they came from.

Could it be that all the bobbleheads are from vault 101? If so, maybe all the bobblehead locations could be connected with vault 101 and maybe the persons with the scouting parties. Wildly theorizing though :D, but it would be cool.

You're possibly right on that one, if you look at the back of the bobbleheads they all have "101" on them.
