How did this game pass quality control?

I haven't experienced any stability problems or major bugs. Little annoyances, but nothing serious.

It's not the new normal because it's the normal, nothing new about it.

Every game Bethesda ever released has had a plethora of bugs. The original FO's were bugfests. And so on.
As long as I have been gaming (since the 80's) there have been bugs. When I play a game, I expect bugs. The difference is: nowadays we can expect downloadable patches reasonably quickly and we can expect most issues to get fixed in due time.

Naturally there are bugs that are unforgivable, like when they make a game actually unplayable or objectively game breaking. But other than that in my experience I expect bugs, and the more complex a game is, the more bugs I expect.

That said, for me F4 had been a surprisingly stable experience so far. Only one crash in almost 100 hours of playtime. The only odd occurance I get every once in a while is a disappearing weapon. The only constantly reappearing strange behaviour is settler npc's preferring the roof over the innards of buildings. Other than that it's been an entirely smooth experience for me. Not that this should matter to anyone who is encountering more issues than me, I'm just sayin'.

Disclaimer:
I don't like bugs nor do I excuse them. I would love an entirely bug free experience, and wish the same for every one else, but I've learned not to expect this.

I haven't come across too many bugs. A few minor ones here and there. Go play Witcher III, then see if you still complain about Fallout lol

Very few and minor bugs, some crashes but nothing major at all, nor game breaking for me. Just hoping to get some stuff "fixed" like upgrades for Silver Shroud armour etc.

Probably about 300 hours in with the only crashes coming when I'm up playing way too late and Steam decides to push an update. That invariably crashes my game.

Had a few content bugs like unreachable or dead quest people, but console lets me work around that with tcl or resurrect. Not ideal, certainly, but not a game-breaker. Of course, gun hotkeys don't always work and Lvl 4 settlers disappear sometimes, but again not the end of the world.

I'm a bit of an oddball, probably, because I never played any of the other Fallout games and didn't play Skyrim until almost two years after it launched because I didn't have the hardware to run it. So the Skyrim I played was very mature and stable, but even then it still had a few issues. I find the general state of Fallout 4 one month after launch to be pretty comparable to the state of Skyrim two years after launch.

All fine and dandy until you do get a serious bug that won't let you continue?

I can't sit in the chair in memory den because the game has me stuck in a suit of invisible power armor. Start over? I have a level 40 guy speced how i like with weapons i like.

So game is shelved for now!

So Fallout 4 will be 'bug free' in a short while after Bethesda has ironed everything out.

Bethesda's dedication is an indication of quality.

I haven't really experienced many of these. There are a handful of dead bodies that won't go away. There have been a few instances where the Pip-Boy or gun wouldn't show up (instantly fixed by saving and reloading). I've seen items 'sink' through surfaces and seen settlers/items clip through walls a few times. None of these are "gamebreaking" glitches though. They're things that need to be addressed, sure. But they're hardly ruining my game experience. Would I like to remove the dead guy and the dead mongrel by the bridge at Sanctuary? Yes, but I'm not standing there staring at them for hours trying to move them over and over again getting frustrated about it.

Have I seen things clip through walls? Yes, but again...oh well. I'm yet to see a Bethesda game that DOESN'T do this. It doesn't really bother me.

Aside from these few things, I haven't experienced any of the issues you're mentioning. Regardless, these are all minor bugs that will be fixed in time. I hardly see any of these things as being deserving of some of the huge rants that I've seen about them.

The problem with bugs is that many don't manifest all the time even in identical platforms like consoles this makes some of them hard to fix and hard to spot. Also the sample size of a beta is tiny compared to a release so not all bugs WILL be spotted before a release. The key with Bugs in my opinion is how stable is the game? And is the company working to fix issues? If the game is stable and the company is working to fix them then that is acceptable in my book.

The game was actually far less buggy than I had anticipated, I know I'm not alone in this.

I'm very impressed with the stability of the game so far.

For Xbox One users clear the blueray storage and power it off through the settings to fix any game breaking bugs

You don't even have to reload, just pausing and un-pausing fixes that :)

Yeah I'll second that, always works for me. But quicksave and load solves a lot of problems I have found.

Ehhh.

A piece of software, any piece of software, should perform the same way on identical machines. That is to say, Fallout 4 should function the same across all PS4's. Fallout 4 should function the same across all XBox One's. PC's are different in that there is no SINGLE PC build like the XBox's and PS's.

If there is a bug that manifests itself on one PS4 (or one XBox One) and not another, then the two users have done something different with the software. Basically, the bug would be on both machines but because one player did not perform the same set of actions in the same order as the other, the bug manifests only on one machine.

Now the question is for you and the OP, did you submit a bug report? If you did, was it no more informative than your posts? The reason I ask, is that if you did NOT submit a bug report, you have no reason to expect BGS to do anything about the bug(s), unless you know that they are mind readers. Additionally, if you did submit one or more bug reports, did you supply enough information for them to reproduce the bug? What it boils down to, is that even if they know about a bug, if they cannot reproduce it and watch it in action, they can only guess as to what the problem is so any "fix" they make may not work.

That doesn't always seem to fix the issue for me. It does sometimes, and I do always try it first. But in the event that it doesn't, a simple save and reload clears it right up. It's a minor issue that only takes 10 seconds or so to resolve. I'd like to see it fixed, but it's not a pressing issue to me.

I'm still having issues with the weapon hotkeys though. If I have a gun out and hit 1, 2, 3 etc to swap to a different one sometimes it takes 10-15 seconds for it to come out. This is annoying, but it's easily cleared up by just selecting the weapon with the menu.

The most annoying bug to me is the fact that I can't send Curie to any of my settlements. She just goes back to Vault 81 regardless of what I do or how I do it. That's the main bug that I'd like to see fixed at this point.

Same as with any other games especialy big ones there are always bugs, in general as far as most of the playbase is concerned Fo4 is def the least buggy of Bethseda relases. Ofcourse that doesnt mean the game is bug free, far from it but for the vast majority of people it is stable and relativly bug free( ofcourse there is always some small percentage of people that will encounter the worst possibile bugs and i do hope they rool out some more patches soon to fix the stuff for you guys as well).

That's just it, the software is the same, there are so many variables however that everyone experiences different bugs. EVERYBODY here knows that!!!!

And the way software 'should' perform isn't always how it does perform, some people experience bugs straight away without 'performing any actions', that could be a fault with the machine itself, it could be a whole number of things. Bugs in Falllout are unpredictable to say the least and it's often caused by something very obscure. Meaning that it can be difficult to pinpoint the source of the bug.

Interesting. Well I can tell you Curie's not a universal bug. I'm on PC and she's happily hanging out at the castle for me. 300 hours in ( retired and obsessive) and no bugs worth mentioning. I had a texture bug at the rock quarry near sanctuary but I restarted the game and that fixed it.

In general, I've had less trouble with BGS than apparently some others do. It may be I decide to get a new PC based on their releases and requirements though.

Not everyone has experienced this bug. Some people have been able to send her to a settlement before, but not after her companion quest. Some people weren't able to send her to a settlement before the companion quest, but have been able to afterward. Some people have simply never been able to send her to a settlement (I'm in that boat), and some people have had no issues at all with her. In any case, Bethesda is aware of the issue, so hopefully it'll be getting addressed in the next patch. I keep all of my favorite companions at Sanctuary, and I'd love to have here there as well, because she's definitely one of my favorites.

I've tried sending her to various different settlements, and it's definitely not a charisma issue or anything like that. I've tried sending her to nearly empty settlements with a base charisma of 10, a +5 charisma outfit, and some graqe mentats to no avail. It's odd, because if I try to send her to a settlement, it'll say "Curie is going to Sanctuary (or whatever settlement)", but she just goes back to Vault 81 and stands in front of the doctor's office.

I can only assume you never played any Bethesda game before. This is the most stable release since Morrowind. Two or three CTDs. With Skyrim at release I had the return of the bluescreen of death. Didn't even think this was possible under win 7. And what bugs are you speaking of? There are bugs, for sure, but so far I didn't have a gamebreaking one. Also a premiere with any Bethesda game.

heh still get a kick out of the same bug that was in fallout 3, fallout NV, and now in fallout 4 has still evaded bethesda and that is VATS. It's still the same buggy mess it has always been. while playing fallout 3 and new vegas I would go into vats with full health plan my attack, but while I was killing the first mobs a second or even third would be chipping away at my health. In those two games VATS stops, but once you release your attack mobs can attack you.

While playing both of those games I lost count of how many times I died from being stuck in vats after I killed my target. Now so far in fallout 4 I have been killed twice, because I was stuck in vats. I just stop using it, but it's sad it even happens.

Also several times while in a dialog with anyone I have had times when I was looking at a blank screen or the back of someones head, but can hear the dialog. At times it would get stuck like that for a minute or each of us have that awkward look on our faces. then you also have the frame rate dropping into nothingness and the game freezing.

on the xbox1

First, I haven't found one game-breaking bug at all in my 110+ hour play time, the only few games are funny at best or a little bit annoying (the occasional character falling through the ground which has only happened to me once). Secondly this is an Open World game where you can do practically anything. So how do you expect them to test EVERYTHING for bugs when even their game testers haven't done everything the collective FO4 community will do?

How? Not saying you are lying, but i haven't seen people reporting that many crashes. We all got a few in our hundreds of hours. When i first started Fallout 3 way back when i used to crash like every half hour for days, until i found the Ini fixes that needed to be done. God that was a freaking mess of a game, same with New Vegas.
