How did this game win awards again?

Post » Thu Sep 19, 2013 12:47 am

HI there, I just bought this game today and have spent about 4-5 hours play time on it, reached level 7 as a warrior type swinging two handers and....

Bullet points:

- fighting is really clunky and i feel totally uncoordinated

- i feel like im holding my axe with my elbows

- which camera angle do i use??

- the first person angle feels boxed and limited vision

- the 3rd person view screws with the camera pivot in caves and trees

- leveling crafts feels cumbersome and way too time consuming

- the dialogue is overly complex with too many names thrown at you and easier to just ignore --- but you can't skip it.

- i spend more time travelling and getting lost than i do in action.

- everything is grey.

- the mouse wheel speed in "pause mode" is painfully unresponsive and sluggish

Yet somehow this game had accolades all over the show....

I'd better leave on a positive though, it all looks very pretty......

As for the mouse, are you sure that in game settings the game is configured to use a mouse and not a controller? If it is the latter it may cause some issues.

As for the combat, while there is quite a bit of it, it is by no means the focus of the game. It's a wide open sandbox RPG with an emphasis on exploring. There is a lot of world to explore and the character building mechanics make it so you can create wildly differing characters to experience content in a different way.

If you're on pc you can adjust field of vision yourself, on the xbox I play the game on this is unfortunately not possible. I agree first-person camera uses too narrow a field of view.

There is such a lot to do and discover in Skyrim that I never experienced all content on a single character, I spread it out among different ones, each with a different skill-set and roleplaying personality.

Give the game a chance, I'm sure it can provide you with many hours of entertainment and moments of wonder (and frustration) too.

It won awards because it's an awesome game. You must have been playing a different one. I've never noticed any of those issues after 560 hours of play.

Getting lost is part of the charm. I do agree the combat is clunky and third-person cam was poorly done.

1. not as bad as you think, and it is still better than the previous Elder scrolls games, plus the game is not just about combat. several people here on the forums have merchant characters or assassins who kill everything without getting into a fight.

2. what do you mean by this?

3. as long as you pay attention, first person works fine, and third person can be got used to

4. the crafting skill are also considered OP, and how are they tough? its easy to learn how to craft, all it is looking at what thing you want to make and getting the stuff for it

5. why are you playing a story-driven game, and not pay attention to the dialogue. IMO, they also give the stories in bits and pieces to help you assimilate

6. that is part of the game, sometimes getting lost is even more fun because you can discover something you did not know about. Adventuring is a HUGE part of the game.

7.??? have you checked the graphics settings? also, mods can help a lot as well

8.again???? check the mouse settings?

It got those awards for being a great game. This game is not a mindless killfest like COD, it is actually fun and exciting.

So, in short, you want to race through everything, have all your objectives in a line, have silent or at least very short spoken NPC's, ignore dialog and story, want you craft skills to level up faster and want the entire game handed to you on a platter so you can hunt your epic loot faster.

Last time I checked, Skyrim wasn't World of Warcraft. The latter may be more your speed.

combat is very smooth for me. Weapons seem in the right place and swing smoothly.

i use mostly 3rd person view. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the jumping animation. Other then that, i have no issues. even horse combat, which is a unique feature in the rpg genre, works out great (though that might be because i use the convient horses mod)

This game is praised for being a huge sandbox game with good plotlines. The world feels very much alive and looks very beautiful. Miles and Miles of plains forests, cities, hamlets, villages, dungeons, etcetc . Sometimes looking up at a mountain and seeing how snowmist forms at the top of that mountain in the morning, makes me wonder who the dev is that put that feature in. Its amazing. it doesnt look grey to me and yes you could get lost, but thats the fun part. How many times did i get lost and found some interesting dungeon or NPC that way??? ALOT!!!

The creatures/npc's are interesting and fun to see them running around, minding their own business. Btw, you can skip dialogue with npc's. i just click outside the dialoguebox or press the spacebar.

crafting in most RPG's is timeconsuming, atleast here its not so difficult, only a bit costly.

I cant say anything about the mousewheel. Again, it works smoothly for me.

so yea, i think Skyrim kinda deserved some awards. Im sad to see it go from RPG to MMORPG. it will lose some of those things.

 The funniest thing I've read all day.

If you're on PC, some of these issues can be changed (I'm deliberately not using the word "fixed"). Since you complain about mouse wheel, I assume you are.
Limited vision: open the console (press ~), type fov X where X is your desired field of view. The deafult is 75 (?) - try 90 at first, then adjust as needed.
There are mods for "everything is grey" problem, but I recommend trying to play a little longer with the game as is. It's a bit monotonous at first, true, but you get used to the colors.

Mouse sensitivity can be changed in the settings. I never noticed mouse wheel being unresponsive, but I usually use the keyboard to navigate menus.

As for the rest of your points... I can't help but feel this is the correct summary:

Getting lost and exploring every nook and cranny is one of the most important features of TES games. If you play it only for the action, you're missing out on the best parts.

Yea i guess finding a shed in some tress just doesn't quite do it for me.

I'm gonna try a new character, maybe lugging a big axe around is too slow for me. just not really that keen on restarting the whole game again... ugh... at least i know where to go now.

not really keen on mods until iv finished the game, mostly because if a game needs mods to be enjoyable first time round i dont believe it deserves to be released as is.

yes i played oblivion when i was released and very much enjoyed it. it was easier to follow and the fighting mechanics were faster and more responsive.

Try at least SkyUI and the unofficial patches. The first will help with the menus, the rest will save you from coming back here tomorrow and saying that Skyrim is too bug-ridden to deserve GOTY. ;)

you're are WOW or COD player aren't you. of course, if you were comparing this game to those, then you would not be complaining since those games are just near mindless kill fests at this point.

EDIT: LOL at the 5 hours and then complaining about restarting. 5 hours is nothing, you have barely played the game.

5 hours? Come back when you've played at least 500 and you actually know how to handle this game.

1) 4-5 hours is BY FAR not enough time to form yourself an opinion of anything.

2) One thing is what you feel, another is what you can clearly see how you're holding it. And I've never feel that "holding with elbows" way.

3) I don't know what's wrong with 1st person. It feels like any other FPS to me.

4) "Dialogue is complex" (LOL), "I don't know what to do with freedom", and "oh, it's all grey and not nice graphics!" makes us all realize what kind of stereothype you are. So I'm not gonna waste more breath with this.

Never had any of this problems, and skyrim will always be my favorite ''open world game'',with so many things to explore and to do on the game, and awesome creativity compared to many others ''open world games'' which I don't want to go in details(not needed,If you got what I mean).

Skyrim isn't an FPS... But this problem is very real. The OP is only complaining about limited vision, but other people get motion sickness with so limited FOV.

Yes, indeed - the 1st-person FOV is way too narrow.

I can only play Skyrim in stretches of 30 minutes to an hour and then I have to take a break, because I get a headache and dizzyness.

The too narrow field of view was my very first annoyance with Skyrim, the second was that Altmer look out of their nipbles.

It's a slow paced game. Getting lost is actually what you are supposed to do! SkyrIm is a "stop and smell the roses" type of game.

Same here. That is, before I changed it. I've been told it's better suited for consoles because you sit farther away from the screen, but apparently it's not always true.

I'm not sure I follow.

Altmer first person view.

Skyrim is nothing like these games; you'll have to learn how to play it, by yourself.
