how difficult is it to...

learn to use the geck? I don't know much about computers and Ive never really played on a pc before. I have played fallout for about 100 hrs on the 360. I basically bought the pc version so I could play the entire game with mods and different stuff, making it more interesting.

As I'm reading throught all the articles about how to create your own map/vault it seems intimidating to do, if I follow those videos will I be able to pick up on how to create my own textures and mods over time?? or is this something I'm way too far behind the times to get up on??

Thanks

Just jump in and get your hands dirty, then play it by ear.

You just gotta try it. There are two kinds of people. Those who get it, and those who don't. If you have an idea and think, nah thats too hard I will never do it. You will never learn. How I learned was I would have an idea, and no matter how crazy it seemed, I just asked questions, tried my hardest, and even if I could not do it in the end, I would learn so much just by trying. So just try random stuff. Put a goal in mind, and learn how to get there, that is the only way you can learn with the geck. But once you know how to use it well, you will be suprised how 'stupid' you were when you started. I have only been using the geck for like 5 months, and I can do stuff I learned in the first three months, 100 times as fast with my eyes closed and my hands tied up. As almost everyone else here can. So try some things, I think you will have fun. :)

You can't make models and textures with The GECK you have to use a external program like Photoshop for the textures and Blender for the models. Now creating houses and stuff like that is mostly trial and error. Take your time and practice makes perfect, I am working on my first mod for Fallout 3 and its alot of work, even though I have experience with the TESConstruction set. but either you enjoy and have fun with or you'll get bored with it and quit.

This is the quote for the GECK.

It takes a certain type of person. I personally play more in the GECK than I ever do playing the actual game. For every 7 hours of Geck time, I have about 1 hour of game time, and that is usually time spent testing my work done in the GECK.

I have been modding since +/-2003 when Morrowind came out. My current mod project has been in the making for over a year now. Sort of, since I dumped version 1 and started version 2 in August of last year.

If you want to give it a go, start with the http://geck.gamesas.com/index.php/Category:Getting_Started#My_First_Vault_Tutorial_Series. If you find you enjoy modding, then continue on your own after that. That tutorial does cover a lot of the basics, but is by no means an anthology on the subject.

He's not joking, try it. :)

If you're more interested in other aspects of modding, like skinning and modelling, you'll have to look up other tutorials.

If you are really motivated to learn how to use it you can do it. I started where you are about six weeks ago (not much PC experience but over 1000 hours of gameplay on the 360) and am just about finished with a mod I decided I had to make. It took hours and hours of reading through the forum here (yes I have searched through all 300+ pages countless times on searches), and in addition to the wiki would highly recommend Cipcis' scripting tutorials and script validator found here http://www.cipscis.com/fallout/tutorials/beginners.aspx.

I would say that the three most important things it will take if you are serious are 1) a clear vision of what you want to accomplish 2) determination and 3) a willingness to experiement. I've done things I didn't think I could when I first started because I had no idea where to start or how to do them, but I just kept plugging along. I knew what I wanted in my mod and I just kept learning and learning and the more I learned the more creative I could be. It's nothing stunning, of course, but it feels great to me. The satisfaction of getting exactly what I want into the game and then playing with it is worth all the effort. Of course, the flip side is the failure of not being able to get what I envision into the game successfully. But, honestly, that is just as fun.

just be careful...

You'll be doodling notes and ideas down once you start to like it and get the hang of it...

you'll be shuffling around projects left and right like a gnat with ADHD and like it.

No mod will ever be perfect, you will discover your own OCD when it comes to mods... like having to hand place everything in a house mod to be just right...

I started the Vault 74 tutorial several months ago. I never finished it. Ultimately I scrapped it and started brainstorming my own kind of vault. A few days ago I was messing around created my first weapon then thanks to Gunmaaster 95 he helped with the it. Now, I'm building the vault idea I had several months ago, again..with Gunmaster95's help.
