How to disable console key to avoid any potential for accide

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 1:17 am

All I see are people making guesses at just what is going on with the console and achievements. We need official clarification on whether achievements are disabled as soon as you hit the console key to bring the console window up, o whether you actually have to enter a cheat and press return to be penalised for achievements?

If just pressing the console key deactivates achievements then this is totally [censored]. Many European keyboards have the Tilde console key mapped directly to a key that's to the left of the number 1 key. It's also just below the ESC key and just above the TAB key. This means it's extremely easy to mistakenly hit that key during combat when switching weapons or when accessing the Options menu with ESC.

I've tried editing the bAllowConsole=1 entry in the Fallout preferences file and changing it to 0 but this does nothing. I assume this is disabled and the console value is hard-coded?

Also, why do I get 0 results when I do a forum search using achievements? And why are obvious questions like this not in the FAQ?

I used the console to spawn the Mysterious Stranger's 44 Magnum last night (9000 damage) and about 4 kills later got an Achievement, and a few kills after that got another one. I have used the console to spawn ammo, stimpacks, caps, etc since I first got the game and I have been getting achievements all along.

I kind of wish the console usage would stop those things as I personally don't like them.

However there is a commmand line in the INI where you can disable the console if you really want to. Look for Console in there and set the value to 0

I added some sensor modules to my inventory via console to fix ED-E and I'm still unlocking chieves. I don't think the console blocks achievements unless it's directly affecting it(?) IE, spawning quest npc or something is my thoughts. I haven't had any achievements blocked otherwise :P.

I found the console disable entry in the .ini file but setting it to 0 still allows you to open the console window.

ATLEAST you all can get INTO the Console. For me, pressing the console key (` or ~) does NOTHING. :cryvaultboy: Anyone else not able to get into console mode on the PC?

Are you using a gamepad? If the control is set to use the 360 gamepad (IE you you hit start to bring up the main menu, etc.) then the console key won't work. Unplug it or go into options-controls and disable the pad, do what you will with the console, then re-enable the controller.

I have no problem getting into console on PC.

I like to run just a little bit faster. Unfortunately, it also makes NPCs run faster - ridiculously faster. Anyone know how to just make me run faster, and not NPCs?

You have to Change the Default INI in the root directory of the game, the one in My Games gets overwritten each time you start the game. Just make a back up first, cuz if you hose this, you have to reinstall the game.

Are you sure it is not showing up? Does your HUD go away? If so, hit the Tab key a couple of times. You can change the offset for the window in the INI. Set it to like 200 or so.

If you have a Media Center remote plugged in, that causes it too. At least it did with Fallout 3. There was a workaround to use http://www.autohotkey.com/ and map the ~ key to another key.

Yes.. not coming up for sure. Here are my .INI settings (it recalls them ie. they don't get overwritten):

bAllowConsole=1

[Menu]
fCreditsScrollSpeed=40.0000
iConsoleTextYPos=800
iConsoleTextXPos=200
iConsoleVisibleLines=15
iConsoleHistorySize=50
rDebugTextColor=255,251,233
iConsoleFont=2
iDebugTextFont=3

When I press ~ it is ignored. I have a USB wireless and a hardwired keyboard plugged in - neither works.

I did have to install that .DLL file to get it to work right on my Windows 7 PC so maybe that is the issue? I had to do the same for FO3. I will go run FO3 again to see if I can get into console mode. Have not tried it since I loaded FO3 a week before FONV came out (for practicing).

Thanks for your suggestions. This is maddening!! :brokencomputer:

:facepalm: UPDATE: That's it !! The d3d9.dll I had to add (along with disabling my second display) preclude me from console mode from either Fallout New Vegas OR Fallout 3. Bummer!!

Mine does not come up either if I press ~. What does that d3d9.dll do and where do I get it?

You're extremely unlikely to accidentally enter any valid console command. The only Achievement related command is http://geck.gamesas.com/index.php/AddAchievement which isn't a console command anyway, so Achievements cannot be "disabled" by such means.

The .dll is a fix for the NPC lag by tricking the game in to thinking you have a specific card which does not have any DX10 or 11 capabilities, which is believed to be the cause of the lag. (And no, NV does not have DX10 or 11 functions)

Q: The game is not awarding Steam Achievements after console use.

A: If the player opens the debug console by pressing the '`' key and enters console commands that affect the player character (ex: rewarding experience or modifying S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats), Achievements will be disabled for the play session. To enable Steam Achievements, restart your play session and avoid using the console.

If you press ~ by mistake, just save and restart your game. They say it just disables achievements in the current play session if you use the console. It doesn't disable achievements for your character completely.

So would we be able to use the command from the console, save, and then reset in order to enable the achievement back as well?
