How Does Armour Work?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 1:22 am

Hi All

Im new to the game, I have just become grand champion of the arena so got that valour armour.

As Im sure you all know, its one piece that covers a whole bunch of pieces, its rating is 7 IIRC...

My question is... Is this one piece of 7 armour, better than many pieces that add up to more than 7?

How does armour work in this regards? Does a 1 piece 7 armour mean that everywhere is protected by the 7 stat or what?

Thanks in advance...

The value of every piece of armor you wear all adds together into a single total. That total is the percentage by which all physical damage you take is reduced by. So if you have a cuirass that gives you an Armor Rating of 5, boots that give you a rating of 2, gauntlets that give you another 2, and a helmet that gives you 1, you have a total armor rating of 10. Everything that hits you is reduced by 10%. So if someone hits you with a sword for 20 points, you only actually take 18.

You will see your total armor rating in your inventory menu. It is near the bottom of the window, between you total encumbrance, and your gold.

Note that spells and magic effects are not reduced by your armor. You take the entire thing whether you are naked or girded from head to toe in steel.

There are actually two Rainments of Valor: a light armor version and a heavy armor version. The light version gives a total armor rating (or AR) of 15. The heavy version gives an AR of 20. How much of that you get depends on your skill in the related Armor category.

Does a 1 piece 7 armour mean that everywhere is protected by the 7 stat or what?

Yes. Oblivion doesn't have locational damage. This means that a shield with an AR of 7 will provide as much protection as a full suit giving an AR of 7. The true value of the Rainment of Valor is the enchantment, rather than the AR. You can certainly get a better AR with a full, six piece set and you can custom enchant each piece. For a low level character, the Rainment of Valor is fine. At higher levels, you'll want more advanced armor.

Edit: Ninja'd :ninja:

Yup, armor reduces weapon damage while Resist Magic performs that job for spells. Resist Magic reduces the effectiveness of all spells that hit you by the specified percentage after compensation for spell effectiveness. So, if you cast a Resist Magic 30% spell with 90% spell effectiveness, the actual magnitude will be 27%.

Also, the maximum armor rating in the game is 85, so don't go hog-wild on shielding spells with high-level armor. Once you hit 85 AR, it's never going any higher.

Ah... So what does the 7 mean in the rating?

Man I wish the steam version came with a manual, Im basically in the dark on a lot of things... Like the option when you talk to people and you have that spinning wedges thing lol I have no idea what that is actually for lol.

Stildawn, here's a great site to get all kinds of information about Oblivion: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion

The Vyper answered your question about 7 AR in his post above.

i wouldnt use the armor if i were you, unless you want to carry around 100 repair hammers. since the armors since the armor is considered one piece, it durability will degrade five times faster than a complete 5 piece set.

But you could use that to your advantage and boost up your Armorer skill. ;)

Only if your Armorer skill is at least 50, which is required for repairing magic items (such as the armor in question ;) ).

You can also use shield magic, very effective as it adds to the total AR.

By golly, so many posts but not a single http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg! This forum needs to shape up as this is the second one I deliver this morning ;)
