How does Bethesda do their cubemaps?

Hey there. I'm trying to make my own version of the wayshrine portals from the Dawnguard DLC (the ones that use cubemaps to show what the other end of the portal looks like). I don't really know any of the theory behind cubemaps. How can I make my own cubemap to use for the portal, the same way Bethesda does it so it looks correct?
