How does blocking work?

i get it that right trigger is right hand, left trigger is left hand, so if im to use a shield in my left hand than left trigger will raise it to block.
but how does the player block when he isnt using a shield?
looking at the latest gameplay demo it looks like there isn't any blocking involved. just standing there getting hit. i remember in the GI articles we were told that blocking can be done if timed properly, a-la batman arkham asylum or something. i didnt see any of it. also it looked like the undead WERE blocking.
the GI article also quoted todd saying that fighting in skyrim will be about staggering and momentum. didn't really see much of that in the demo. the player got hit as if a paper sword slapped him - not much weight int he hits.

i just tend to think that 1st person melee doesnt work well. not in current games anyways.

How do u imagine blocking works in this game? because i must admit that a combat without defensive moves is incredibly shallow. defense in The witcher 2 is very important and it makes combat incredibly fun, IMO. i wonder how defense will work in skyrim.
