How does it come that many people are dissapointed about the

I've survived Arena, Daggerfall, and Oblivion without them, so I really don't see what the big deal is, myself, as it's really not something I expect from the series nor really use in any game. I'm not sure how popular they truly ever were in Morrowind, but obviously, Bethesda hasn't considered them important enough to include in what is now 80% of the core series.

Ahhh, Sleign. It figures I'd read you here, my spear nemesis. :stare:

Anyways, spears have the potential for cool moves, make sense within the world, and weren't really that broken in Morrowind unless you purposely tried to use them that way (try using them normally without the 'use best attack' mode on and with no backpedaling). Saying they were rightfully taken out is like saying bows should be taken out because you could kill stuff before it got close enough to hit you, and you could even jump on a rock and be invincible!!!! UNBALANCED!!!!

Hahaha, I exaggerate, I know. But it's still ridiculous. However, Todd has already stated that spears aren't in in the way we want them (stabby-stabby), so I recognize that us spear-lovers need to calm down a little. Give the forums time to breath, and let them come around on their own.

They weren't popular, in fact they were despised along with throwing weapons. The majority of people complained about how useless they were. The only reason for the seeming popularity now is just because it was in Morrowind and then it rubbed off on others to want spears. It goes to show that those things shouldn't be in the game when the majority of people admit that they didn't use them in Morrowind. So what is the point of putting back in a weapon that the majority of people won't use? This is the riddle of the sphinx.

@Broken-Scale Ah, my archnemesis, we meet again. I challenge you to Kung Fu! :toughninja:

Yet people just conveniently forget the flails that appeared in more games of the core series than spears because the flails remained back in the niche days of the series, I'm assuming. Morrowind is, as far as I know, the first mainstream title of the series, so the spear, among other things, became known while flails, among other things, became forgotten. Is that assumption correct?

Bring it!!! :ninja:

On a side note, I've always wanted a nemesis!!! :twirl:

EDIT: Actually, Seti, if I had to choose between Flails and Spears, I'd chose flails. But spears are slightly more realistic to hope for than flails are.

I just want to buy a ship, keep a horse, and use what is called "the magic map" that has been in the series since before I was born.

Morrowind was the first on a console, not consoles (bear with my inner language nazi). I most certainly did not see a PS2 port of Morrowind... and the reason I'm adamant on that point is because I did not get to play a brand new Morrowind. :brokencomputer:

Hence his comment about Morrowind being "the first mainstream TES game". Morrowind was my first TES game, I first played it when it was released on XBox,and I loved spears in Morrowind, but I'm not going to cry that they aren't in Skyrim.

This. Computers were even more inaccessible to the majority in late 90s and early 2000s because they just cost more money than people were willing to pay and still do for the most part today. That is the niche that consoles fill, they allow people to play all the games that PC users can but on a budget. And no, it doesn't make them lesser gamers because they play on the console, in fact I would play some games on the console over the computer if I couldn't use a 360 controller with it *cough* AC *cough*, but luckily most cross platform games today have controller compatibility for the PC version.

Install a "HALT!" horn on it, tie a couple Bosmer to chains to use as anchors, and place jet engines into the hull so that I may levitate at 1000 mph and my wish is realized.

Why pit them against each other? Flails, morning stars, thrown weaponry, slings, spears, Independently targeting particle-beam phalanx. VWAP! Fry half a city with those puppies. We should get tactical smart-missiles, phased-plasma pulse-rifles, RPG's. We need some sonic electronic ballbreakers, we need nukes, knives...sharpened sticks....

Yet, I regress. Its not just avocation for spears, but a wide array of weaponry to meet role playing needs in general. The latter two thirds of the first paragraph not withstanding.

Morrowind was my first TES as well. I recently tried to get into Daggerfall, but the combat system is ridiculous. I didn't really use spears in Morrowind, but I appreciated that they were there. If they have pole-arms in Skyrim I'd find it extremely odd if they disregard spears. Personally I think they might just be trolling us and the first weapon you're given will be a spear

I would imagine that newer fans like you guys (well your veteran fans but in the point of Arena and Daggerfall your newer, bare with me hehe) I would think it would be very difficult for you guys to go back and play Arena and Daggerfall as not only would the graphics grind on you but the controls are sloppy in comparison to now. It seemed natural and awe-inspiring graphics back in the day when I was 8 and got Arena and Daggerfall for my birthday and I played those svckers constantly. It's easy to move forward in a series but it's hard to back up into the DOS era.

So how was that not what I said? Although its not confirmed, if we lose mounts and spell creation, thats loss. where did I say that Morrowind was the pinnacle of content?

You could mine, cook and farm in Oblivion (sure it took a little RPing but it was there), plus shield bash was in Oblivion. The magic system being better is still out. Like I said, we always gain some things, but I dont see why we have to lose content as well.

What content are we losing from Oblivion to skyrim?

We'll only know once we get the final product. Could be spell creation, could be mounts, could be inventory content depth, could be anything. Could be nothing (hopefully).

I just am a little lost on why we should be complaining about losing content when we have no proof on any thing actually being lost.

Spears I understand but we still have pole arms that seems like a good compromise in my opinion.

I found it an interesting experience and successfully managed to slide back into it. With a bit of tinkering with the settings, I created my own perfect controls for Daggerfall that require very little hand movement (sprint=m3, for example, and I use a view movement similar to that of pretty much all first-person PC games today) and, with the instructions that came with the download, DOSBos was actually quite easy to work with. I can almost reinstall Daggerfall onto a DOS emulator from memory, now, and Daggerfall flows very naturally, for me. I can play Arena, too, but I didn't like Arena as much, so I spent less time playing it. Arena's controls are truly a bit inconvenient (being as rigid as they are), but I got used to them, as well. The graphics of Arena and Daggerfall actually have a certain charm to them, I'd say, but that could just be a nostalgic connection to my first video games. I can't stand the MIDI music and sounds, however. From a musical standpoint, I just can't appreciate many of the songs, the sound quality annoys me, and he frequent sound glitches are a nuisance. I can deal with old graphics, strangely enough, but old sound ticks me off. That reminds me, there's something creepy about 90's dungeons.

And a good way to keep from losing content is to make a ruckus about it. Boorish perhaps, but effective and forum going.

I have no issue with the graphics. My issue is having to flail my mouse around to attack and being too weak at the start to get out of the beginning dungeon in under 2 hours

Right making a ruckus does and has worked but in this phase of the development it is unlikely that many of these ideas can or will be added.

So i feel like it would be better to wait for the game to come out and then complain and make a ruckus about the real problems so that they will not be in future games.
