How does DPS work?

I've been wondering for sometime how damage per second works. Help

I believe its the most damage you can do in one second, or atleast a similar timeframe.
I.E a minigun will have low DAM, which is the amount of damage done per bullet, but the DPS is huge.

DAM x ROF.

Example, a 9mm SMG with 5 damage and a refire rate of two shots per second would have 10 DPS.

High DPS weapons usually have a low DAM but a high ROF, making them more useful for dealing with animals and lightly armored foes. Example: Gatling Laser.

Conversely, that anti-material rifle isn't going to be firing very fast, but it has such a high DAM that no amount of armor will save you.
