How does one savour this piece?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:01 am

Ohai.

I have a rotting copy of Daggerfall somewhere in my house.
Bought it a while ago (with the box, manual and everything), played it, and put it back in its box forever.
I'm considering playing it again, but do not know what mindset would be appropriate.

I'm one of those "hardcoe role-players" from Morrowind (pardon the label) and Dungeon Diving seems stupid to me.
At the same time, Daggerfall allows for some fun backstory/character creation, but Dungeon Diving is a big part of the game?
Should it be played like a casual game? Be a hero (with a hideous face) and save the world?

I really want to play this game, but I don't like it!

Well, you know, just like Morrowind, you can do what you want in Daggerfall. And there's a lot of dungeon diving in Morrowind, too; you just don't notice it because the dungeons are puny. I'd be curious what makes you think MW is "hardcoe" and DF isn't. (And for the record, asking for advice while at the same time implying that someone's favorite game is below your standards and but a casual experience is bad form ;))

Anyways, as with MW you can just play it as you want. I didn't like the dungeons when the game first came out (they were scary and intimidating), and it's possible to play without doing much of it. There are many guilds to join, and some guilds are almost exclusively in-town quests and such, while others are completely dungeon centered. In fact, some of the roleplaying for me comes from which quests you accept and which you refuse, so once you learn which quests involve dungeons from their descriptions, you can easily avoid them, So you can do a lot without going underground (I did for about 2-3 years before I really got into the dungeons). But I suggest you try it once you're more familiar with the game, because a Daggerfall dungeon is quite the experience!

Most sincere apologies for sounding so harsh, but I never said it was below my standards now did I?
Never stated Morrowind was hardcoe either. However, a big part of Morrowind, for me, was the small things.Placing stuff around my house, mostly.
Using houses as storage turns me off.

Please don't make me the bad guy.

EDIT: Oh, and I didn't Dungeon Dive in Morrowind either.

Heh, well you aren't going to find any joy in decorating anything in Daggerfall! If you put something on the ground, it shows up as a pile of stuff, and not necessarily what you dropped (a sword will likely become a pile of gold or a bag of trinkets). Kind of sad, as I also greatly enjoy a finely decorated house full of my loot. I'll freely admit to an obsession with candles in MW; it's a wonder my house in Caldera hasn't burned down!

Anyways, as for being below your standards, I took that from your statement declaring yourself one of those "hardcoe role-players" from Morrowind, which I originally read as "MW players are hardcoe, what's with this stupid dungeon diving game? How quaint!" which is probably not where you were going. My bad.

Again, though, while dungeons are a big part of the game, there's still a lot to do in towns and such. But dungeons are a big part, and if you decide to play, give them a shot after a while.

No hard feelings? *hugs*

With that said, reading your guide and watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_MY0ihuJZc, on loop makes me want to play the game.
I'm not too sure how to word it. Generic fantasy, damsel in distress, slay thy foul beast of undeath, D&D style fun... WANT.
Blame my sudden change of heart on the music.

I'll probably post again in an hour or so when I give up on installation and ask for help. The guides... are not clear. I've played it successfully, without music, sadly.

Anyhoo, thanks alot!

Hmm. I went into it, at first, with an attitude of "Hey, let's explore TES history a bit."

Now, I stay for the complexity of the gameplay and the overwhelmingly massive size of the experience. I don't place any TES game before another, so I tackled this one in the same mindset that I tackled Morrowind and Oblivion.

And this was your mistake.

Anyway, if you don't like it... don't play it. I'm not sure there's anything that we can say to you that will make you like a game that you've already played and decided you don't like it.

On a different line of thought, is the download version more advantageous in terms of stability? Or "installability"?

The download version is exactly the same version you get on the CD.

Without giving specifics, do you think Daggerfall would run on a modern (not gamer, mind you) laptop? With a graphic card. Running Vista?

Absolutely. The graphics card does not make a lick of difference; it's all on your CPU.

Hold the "Windows" key on your keyboard and press "Pause." This will pull up some system information. DOSBox has made great strides in optimization in the last few years, so if you have a relatively modern laptop you should be fine.

I'm about to discover my new obsession (I hope). Wish me luck in installation.
A surge of dopamine flows through me as I undust the box, all while listening to Ride of the Valkyries.

Tatata! Tata! Tatatatata! Tata! Ta!

EDIT: Oh FFS! I can't find the disc... Time to decimate my library...
EDIT 2: Wasn't in the library. May be in my "recent" pile, for some reason.
EDIT 3: Wasn't in the "recent" pile. I'm going to look around the house.
EDIT 4: Although I didn't check the entire house, it isn't in Ol' Faithful (my older computer) I will now check my older computers, and the rest of the house.

put on some thing loose, like a robe, slippers maybe even a Fez.

then pour yourself a glass of fine wine and some cheesecrackers, maybe even a good pipe, turn down the lights, start the game and and voila!

Well if you really can't find it you can always download it, it's free now. :)

I am Grey, imperial Agent, sent by Emperor Uriel Septim VII himself to the Iliac Bay, in a quest to exorcise King Lysandus and retrieve a certain letter.
After experiencing a sense abolishing storm, I have found myself trapped in a cave, with little more than ripped shirt and my trusty sword.
I cannot pull the strength to attack things though...

Just remember to equip something silver or better (I always chose the ebony dagger during character creation) to take down that

I suppose I could just use my acrobatic skills to run/jump/climb away from it.
Do not let my skill set confuse you, for I am noble. If not I, my cause certainly is. One could say my means of executing given tasks are a bit unorthodox...
I just murdered two Men, both of which attempted to kill me. Why they refuse to hear reason is beyond me.

One thing you may want to keep in mind, if you join a knightly order, ALL of their quests involve dungeon diving.

Other guilds/quest givers have a mix, it's completely possible to avoid massive dungeons all together when doing side-quests and free-roaming. The MQ has some unavoidable dungeons, but the MQ doesn't matter at all after you meet your contact near the very beginning.

So far, other than having to travel a bit more than I would have liked, the lack of black shoes/boots or any other color for that matter annoys me... Greatly...
