how does Steam work? : Fallout: New Vegas

Like does it update automatically to the latest patch because I just bought the game and I'm wondering if it has the latest patch to mod.

Oh and do you need the Fallout NV disk to play NV on the PC, after installing it.

Since I go to Steam first then play New Vegas I was wondering if I still need the disk. Thanks again

It automatically updates if you set it to do so. Also you don't need the disk in after its installed. You just need steam running to play it.
