How does the game handle a mix of light and heavy armor?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:31 pm

My character is currently wearing a combo of light and heavy armor, mainly because some light armor has a higher damage resistance than what I currently have in heavy. What kind of armor bonuses, if any, will be given? I seem to remember OB displayed your total armor rating. I haven't seen that in Skyrim.

edit: changed combo "or" to combo "of"

It is indeed there. When you have the apparel screen open and swap things out, look at the bottom right of the screen. You'll see overal armor rating there.

ive wondered too im guessing the full armor bonus perk is the only thing that matters to that other than that its based on individual pieces

if you have the perks for full heavy or light armor and the matched sets perks, those will clearly be broken by mixing up heavy and light armor, else wise their is no disadvantage to it as such.

Total waste of perks, you should stick to one or the other, perks are really important for increasing your armor rating, skill alone is not enough. Especially since both light and heavy have perks that increase armor rating by 25% when wearing ALL one type of armor. There's quite a disincentive to mixing armor.

This.

Also you will level both light and heavy armor as long as you are wearing 1 piece of each. I think it levels slower if you are only wearing 1 piece instead of 4 but I was using a light helmet with heavy chest/gloves/boots for a while and heavy and light leveled and there was no down side (I wasn't perk for the full set bonus).

The biggest drawback is the effect of perks from one tree not applying to one or more pieces of your equipped armor. So you either spec to both trees or you suffer a bit.

I mostly wear light, but if something looks cool or has a good enchantment I'll wear whatever.

I'm not sure if it effects how quickly they'll level and I know you can't use the matched set perks, but who cares? Don't people complain about getting too easy anyways?

I wear the best gear that I like and keep it upgraded, but I never even look at my armor rating.

If you're planning on using a shield then taking those set bonus perks is a total waste. You can run around nekkid if you block carefully.

If you're concerned about the abilities the gear grants, why not just disenchant it, then apply that enchantment on another item of your preferrd armor class? Otherwise, you're just wasting perks that could be used on useful things like... the speech tree. Yeah, speech...

Unfortunately there are perks that reward wearing only one type of armor. This is plain a bad design decision, especially the matched bonus because all unique armors are not complete sets (savior's hide, ebony mail, dragon masks...) thus their practical value is greatly diminished. There are some enchanted amulets/armor pieces that enhances the light/heavy armor skills so they can be used partly to compensate this.

Thanks. My current rating is 94. What's the maximum rating?

There is no max, but armor stops being any more effective at any armor value higher than 567.

Given the armor cap of 567 and how easy it is to achieve with high smithing I actually decided it's the armor perks that have diminished practical value. The unique armors have little to no practical value for other reasons, namely they do not fit in to any of the smithing perks so without heavy +smithing you can't get them to legendary and most have borderline useless and/or replaceable enchants when compared to what you can enchant yourself.
