How does the game . . . work, actually?

Post » Fri Mar 28, 2014 8:08 pm

This may be the stupidest question every, but I keep reading rumors and hints, some from those involved in the Betas and others from imaginative speculators. Yes, I know it's an MMORPG, but the description on the website suggests its a bit different than WoW (which I already I said I hated). That description implies that you're actually "questing" with people. Yes, you can do PvP if you want - after level 10 - but you can just do PvE if you want.

One scenario I would hate is if I rolled a charcter, stepped in game ... and was slaughterd because some other player wants to powerlevel by hanging out and killing newbies. That would kind of svck.

I guess what I'm imagining is entering the game, questing, seeing other players around doing the same thing. After level 10, then what? Does it just evolve into one huge melee? Again, I've read topics that suggest it doesn't but I just thought I'd ask.

Don't worry Ross, the PVE and PVP areas are separate; although there are PVE quests in the PVP zone, but there aren't PVP quests in the PVE zones. If you stick to the PVE zones you don't have to worry about other players trashing you.

You can't get killed by another player unless you go to Cyrodiil, so strike that off your list of worries.

You will see other people doing the same thing as you, but they do phases and instances of the zones (since it is a megaserver) to keep the population spread out somewhat.

After level 10 you can do pvp if you wish, and have to take an action that physically relocates you into the PvP area of Cyrodiil. Until you actually do that, the only thing you have to worry about killing you are the mobs.

The only place that is a PvP free-for-all melee is Cyrodiil... which you have to actively go to. Everything else is wide open PvE.

I cannot stress enough how much this game is a gift to us solo RP types. Just enough MMO that it's there when you want it, but never in an intrusive way. :)

Thanks for the replies. This is what I'm not clear on - what do you mean by mobs?

At BSparrow: Thanks again. That's what I want to hear.

You can level up to the cap without ever seeing a PvP player. If that is your choice.

Mobs are the common term for game monsters, or simply all the computer controlled beings you fight in the game.

mobs is slang for monsters, non-player enemies to be killed for treasure, quests, experience etc. I think it once was short for like "mobile" objects or something like that but typically it's the non-player critters you kill.

No problem. I know that's often my concern when I start a new MMO. This time, I just happen to know differently from beta testing. :D

Taken from mmoglossary.com

MOB
MOB is an old programming acronym of Mobile Object Block. Mobs are all computer controlled characters in the game. You should likely use some other term such as monster, creep, or bad guy.

Everyone kinda svcked at (PvP) fighting at some point. I don't PvP for my own reasons but this game is actually a good place to learn how not to svck. If you give it a chance.

PvP only exists in Cyrodiil.

Only in Cyrodiil do you need to be on your guard at all times. Everywhere else which is PvE, only NPCs can harm you, making towns and cities 110% safe.

This map might help:

http://elderscrollsonline.com/en-uk/map/tamriel

The green bit in the middle is Cyrodil. This is where player vs. player action takes place, the story behind it is a war between 3 alliances. You can't wander in there by accident, you have to choose to go there.

The red, blue, and yellow areas of the map show the areas of each alliance that will be available at launch. There is no player vs. player in these areas, the action is more co-operative - you can group with others or play solo if you like.

In short, other players can only kill you in Cyrodil, the zone in the middle.
