How does VATS work in the world of Fallout?

Is VATs supposed to be a plugin for PIPBOY that slows down the perception of time of the person using it?

Uh, it's just a game mechanic, and doesn't have antying to do with the lore regarding Fallout.

Oh I'm sorry. Did I offend you in anyway? I'm pretty sure I was asking a question that was relavent to this section of the forums. Are we not allowed to discuss the possiblity of a game mechanic being part of the lore? I mean the PIPBOY is part of the lore, so I don't see why VATS can't be. I mean, it does stand for VAULT TEC ASSISTED TARGETING SYSTEM does it not? If the name VAULT TEC is part of the acronym, I don't see why it can't have been something created by Vault-tec in the game universe. A "fail" would be someone who keeps asking why Fallout has a 1950ish theme, I keep seeing threads like that, that's a fail cause it's something everyone interested in Fallout should know by now.

Fail.

Come on now, it is a valid question.

It's kind of hard to say what it is in terms of the game world, but I doubt it would be something that slows down the perception of time, because that would probably be a highly coveted weapons technology. I would just take a guess that it's a system for visually highlighting critical areas on a target's body and projecting the likelyhood of a hit given statistics the Pipboy records of it's user's combat abilities... But I'm probably reading way too far into things.

An easier answer, and the more likely one is the idea that in the Fallout world is that it's not science, it's Science!

"-Using advanced real-time tactical imagery, V.A.T.S. scans the threat, pinpointing vunerable areas; calculating success potential and increasing strategic desisivness -in other words, it lets you pause for a moment, and makes Mr.Scary go away." - Quote from http://www.prepareforthefuture.com/?fbid=F54b0#/3/

It doesn't go into the technical process of how exactly it works, though I imagine it posibly it might work by the PipBoy being tuned into the User's brain, seeing as there is similar technology that messes with how the brain works in the world of Fallout.

Yeah he more or less got it, i believe the Pipboy Interacts with the users brain allowing them to *pause* for a time period so fast they dont realize they *paused* it all comes as a natural instinct, I also believe that this Mode* is triggered instinctively by the user, while some utilize it in every battle others would use it when their in dire danger...of course i don't know if this is solid, its all speculation on my part

i think it works similarly to a real world explanation to the force (star wars)
a SUPER FAST computer sees the threat comes up with a solution and instantly tells your brain what to do
