How i explain the Yao Guai:

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:48 am

How could a Chinese-named animal, live in an Anglo-Saxon country; the United States is both .'Fallout Three'. and Yao Guai occur?

It is my belief, when Communist China invaded America; the giant radscorpions and attack dogs created many casualties, and the Yao Guai were genetically engineered from both porcupines and bears. Originally
meant to serve as guard animals, the Yao Guai at one Chi-com base escaped and reproduced wildly.

How do you explain the Yao Guai?

Its a pun. Its a corruption of Yo-Gi. Over 200 years of only scarely written history the real name has been forgotten only for the nickname to supllant the real name.

Similar real world examples include the word Dinner (Which currently can mean the midday, or Evening meals, but originaly comes from the Latin word meaning breakfast.

Yao Guai is not a pun of Yogi. Yao guai means monsters in Chinese.
The mutated bears probably got the name from the surviving Chinese soldiers after the war.

What drama. How was I jumping on the guy?

My point still stands. Yao guai IS monsters in Mandarin and is written as 妖怪 in the Chinese language, and I think it is more likely that the bears got the name from the Chinese soldiers who encountered these terrors.

I believe it is established that yao-guai are mutated bears, probably caused by the same thing that caused radscorpions and giant ants, as to the name, I think the theory is indeed given to it by Chinese soldiers, it is quite clear that there was some Chinese presence in the area around DC, judging from the existence of items like Chinese pistols and assault rifles, and a name meaning monster in Mandarin, which is indeed what the term pronounced as yao-gui is, seems like exactly what the Chinese soldiers must have thought of when they saw such creatures.

there are a bunch of chinese ghouls in an old food packing plant called momma Dolce's, they're covert agents that survived the war, they were suppposed to be used during some sort of operation before the bombs dropped but instead became ghouls and continued the war they'd been fighting forever for some reason.

as for the yao-Guai, they aren't gen engineered, they're just mutated bears, I don't know where the name come from bu t there's been at least one "mutated bears" horror movie already.

And honestly, think about it, whats one of the animals you don't want to wander in from the forest and go berserk?

bears of course, they wiegh around 500 or so pounds and are equipped with huge claws and teeth...

I based my ideation, upon a very grim scenario now playing itself out in West Virginia; the DNR imported coyotes to control the deer poulation and instead, they began preying upon local pets and livestock. I imagined the Chinese high command having a similar disaster, but with humans being the victims of the Yao-Guai.

Yogi Bear, go watch the cartoon. It was around during that time.

My best guess is that their original name "Bear" had been forgotten years after the war and after any people came out of their vaults. I don't think anyone outside of the vaults or some form of shelter survived very longed after HUNDREDS of nukes were dropped. At the OP, the Yao Guai isn't any engineered war animal, it's just a heavily irradiated Bear (Which survived the Rad doses). Due to the radiation, it lost large patches of hair, and it's skin became very itchy. It's skin becoming very itchy, or annoying (Strange and irritating feelings underneath the skin.), it becomes quite aggravated and goes insane because of it.

OK, fine, Yao Guai is BOTH the Chinese name AND a pun on Yogi Bear. Geez.
And people do know what bears are. It's referenced in the game when someone talks about the yao guai.

Yao Guai doesn't sound anything like Yogi, that's just not how it's pronounced. It sounds like "Yow Gwai" where the 'ai' is pronounced like an I. Three Dog even says it clearly on the radio, so there really shouldn't be a debate that it's supposed to sound like Yogi. It's chinese.

Feral animal spirit is too specific, and come to think of it, monster is too general a translation.
Yao guai in Chinese means unknown or malevolent ghosts, spirits or other supernatural beings.

I believe the name probably occured as a sort of cross-translation "error". But it all depends on when Yao Gaui began to appear; immediately after the bombs, or years and years later as bears mutated further and further?

It seems to me that it may have been slang developed for these mutated monsters shortly after the bombs dropped. Survivors talked of enormous monsters, and it's likely some may have believed them to be mutated weapoins unleashed by the Chinese. And just as Sputnik became a part of popular english lexicon, a Chinese word about some monster spirit evil thing was adopted.

Don't forget that there were still a number of survivors of the bombs. Many ghouls and feral ghouls who live today are survivors themselves. Underworld was established shortly after the bombs dropped by survivors from throughout D.C., mainly the urban areas. As vault-dwellers emerged from their holes these survivors would have formed the majority of information about what life was now like. And it's possible that the name for these savage monsters, named after evil Chinese spirits, were communicated to the vault-dwellers and stuck.

tuck your head between your knees and kiss the ass that the porcelain goddess graces
meeting a yao guai would really mess up your picnic in the wasteland wouldnt it
yogi bear always steals pic-a-nic baskets with his buddy boo boo
yao guai often travel in groups of 2 or more
kissing it yet?
no?
then youve lost your lunch
yao guai/yogi wins again

Did... did somebody just mix up Yogi Bear with Yu-gi-oh? Oh dear Azura, somebody show this kid a cartoon made before 1990.

I swear, these darn kids these days, what with their annie may cartoons and their rap music and their Super Sweet 16s and their Transformers Animated (weren't they already animated?) and their XBOX 360's. Why, back in my day, we had to make do with 8-bit Sega Master Systems that were in 2D and had to be tuned into the TV to work and we had to walk 16 miles in the snow to the game store and the games actually were difficult to play! And we liked it! And get offa my lawn!

I swear, these old men these days, what with their kar tuns and assassinated pop stars with their Super Sweet 50s and their Jetsons (wasn't that Flintstones in space?) and their stereotypical dolls/action figures. Why, now in our day, we have to make do with PCs and consoles that are in 3D and have to be tuned to a monitor to work and we have to wait in lines in front of game stores and we actually want games that are difficult and have stories! And we would like it! And I kinda don't get how a Sega Saturn has anything to do with Yogi Bear and animes, but you're probably right, because you're x years older and don't share the urge of the younger generation to bellitle others on online forums just because they like something you don't!

I honestly do not believe that it's a reference to Yogi Bear. Yogi didn't debut until 1958 and it was only as a secondary character on the Huckleberry Hound Show. He didn't even get his own show until 1961, so it's doubtful as to whether he would have been a household name.
