How do u feel playing as Dragonborn but not as a Nord?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:04 pm

Simple question..
How do u feel playing as Dragonborn but not as a Nord? Using shouts, go on with the main quests, and other thing relative to the Nord culture?
For example I'm playing as Imperial becuase I love them, but playing as him... Do u care about it?

My Khajiit feels the most out of place being the Dragonborn. Maybe because he's normal height. Alkosh is described as being "a real big cat." If I was on PC I would change his height to make him a little bigger than an High Elf.

My Orc is, feels and looks more like a Dragonborn than any Nord anyone could possibly create, and His name is Smittywerbanmanjenson.

Originally, I was going to name him after Warcraft's Grom Hellscream for obvious reasons, but I settled for Smitty because he's #1.

I've only ever been the dragonborn two times, only completed the MQ one time and that was with an argonian. Felt normal. There's no need for the dragonbotn to be a nord, since it's not a race-thing.

Of the five Dova I've played - Nord, Altmer, Dunmer, Imperial and Bosmer - my Daedra worshipping Dunmer feels the most dragonborn with the Nord warrior a close second. My Bosmer feels the least dragonborn, and I'm currently playing an Argonian at level 49 and still haven't spoken to Alvor in Riverwood or taken a message to Whiterun. I'll end this playthru at the end of TG radiant quests.

And the GreyBeards and all the stories about the Dragons and the Dragonborn, aren't they Nordic?

Of course they are nordic, since the game is set in Skyrim. It's all nordic history. However, the whole dragonborn concept isn't race-based.

Personally I felt the Nord was the most immerse play through and made the best dragonborn. I had a Bosmer and several other characters that just didn't fit the bill imo and i ended up abandoning them after I completed the guilds.

The Greybeards are Nords, but the Dragonborn can be anyone. It's decided by Akatosh.

I couldnt really get into the main quest with any other race than Nord.

I ended up abandoning the character once i'd visited the greybeards - it just didnt feel right.

Can't do it for the life of me.
Morrowind, you make it in Azura's shrine and what do you find as failed prophets? Exclusively Dunmer, yes.
However, Morrowind at least had this tone of "Pssssh you can't be the Nerevarine, you're a damn outlander." It seemed friendly towards the idea that someone nobody expected was the Nerevarine. It took that possibility/conundrum, embraced it, and addressed it DIRECTLY in NPC dialog. (Note I don't think anyone ever said "you can't be the Nerevarine you're a Khajiit" but they did scoff at your claim because you were an outsider not native to Morrowind (if you were a Dunmer, you still weren't a native, so they scoffed all the same)) You felt ok as a Khajiit Nerevarine because everyone had been looking at you funny and doubting your claim the entire game, with the only people giving you a chance being those who HAVE to because the loony Emperor commanded them to OR the Ashlanders who look at the qualifications of the Nerevarine objectively, which speak nothing of race.

Skyrim? Skyrim tries to plug it's ears and look the other way instead of really addressing that possibility. Yes, I know there's that damned book saying "ANYONE CAN BE DRAGONBORN!!" but I still think it's pretty damn odd that my Argonian can absorb a dragon's soul and the Nords all say "yeah he seems legit" instead of "wait wtf a lizard can't be dragonborn" followed by some NPC attempting an explanation. Then I eventually end up in Sovngarde with exclusively Nord NPCs (who talk about how Sovngarde is for honorable Nords only even!), and again, no explanation is given.

And another thing: who's idea was it to ban Khajiit from the cities? For me, that makes roleplaying a Khajiit especially hard, since wtf I'm the ONLY Khajiit that can get into the cities, 'cept J'Zargo, but it's obvious he made it in the city because he's mother****ing J'Zargo.
And Again, instead of addressing this issue and providing an explanation as to why I can get in, the game plugs it's ears and looks the other way, the guards say "WHAT'S THAT LALALALALALALA YOU'RE A NORD? SURE GO RIGHT IN LALALALALA."

The only character that lasted me through the whole MQ is an Imperial. Which is kinda odd since all previous ones were Nords.

It felt a tiny bit odd at the start but since he (a Battlemage) already was Archmage I thought that the whole shouting thing would come naturally to him.

I really have tried to do the Viking warrior numerous times (Barbarians, spellswords and whatnots) but for some reason the Imperial was the one that stuck.

I had no problem justifying an Imperial Dragonborn by just assuming that he was in the line of the kings in the distant past.

My Khajiit however ... yeah. She's not even pursueing the Main Quest.

Something about a shouting stealth cat felt all kinds of wrong. Have to say that playing as a nord seemed more natural to the main quest. Shame really because it didn't matter in oblivion what race you played the main quest with.

Well I feel okay playing as a Nord or Imperial Dragonborn, but an Altmer, Dunmer, Khajiit or Bsomer? Just doesn't sit well with me.

Like in Morrowind being a dunmer Nerevarine doesn't change the fact that you're still seen as an outlander, this is the same. Actually, most of the people does not even acknowledge the player being the dragon born.

I know there is an explanation about why a non-Nord can be the Dovahkiin, but in my opinion it's weak.

So one of my small criticisms of the game is that you cannot opt out of being the Dragonborn. Not unless you avoid talking the the Jarl of Whiterun. I know you can just avoid the Bleak Falls Barrow quest too, but that doesn't really seem right either.

I have an evil Dunmer character now who is not the Dovahkiin, and doesn't have to deal with dragons. At the cost of not visiting Dragons reach. and it's great. He tries very hard not to even learn shouts (ie avoids word walls).

In particularly it is just weird for an Altmer, or Khajiit, or even an Argonian to be the Dragonborn. In my opinion.

I think both Skyrim and Oblivion should have had a graceful way to opt out of the main questline.

I can't play as nord. I dunno why, I just can't. Any nord char lasts only first two-three quests and I abandon it. Playing khajit is more preferable for me. As for those who wonders about khajit being dragonborn, Ka Po Tun may be the answer.

Argonian is my best dragonborn. Looks like dragon, shouts like humadraugr because that human voice was horrible.

They do acknowledge him or her as being a Nord though. You can tell from the enemies battle cries. This is at least better than MW. I also have guards asking if I am the Dragonborn, or that they heard that I was. They also mention something if I am in any of the other factions. Not everyone does it (that would seem odd anyway) but enough do it that it is obvious.

Morrowind was definitely better as a Dunmer for the MQ. Just seemed more Lore friendly, same as playing a Nord for Skyrim. I think OB did give you more freedom Lore-Wise to be whatever you wanted.

I play as a nord and a bosmer. The nord certainly feels better as the dovahkiin. The bosmer just doesn't feel quite right.
