How do I find my horse?

Post » Mon Mar 17, 2014 7:05 pm

Hi all - so I left my horse "parked" outside of Crowhaven before going inside for the vampire quest. I'm done and come out, and he's gone! I left him a bit of a distance away thinking the skeleton skirmisher wouldn't attack and chase him away, but something obviously did. And yes, I did place a marker where he was standing. How can I find/retrieve him and/or his body? I'm doing major life detection in the area but no luck so far. Is there a helicopter spell or similar?? :stare:

Thanks!

It is sad when a trusted companion is killed. I've reloaded earlier saves even if it meant going back through a lot of content to save a horse.

Worst case is, you can buy another horse from a stable, and life will go on.

I've gotten to where I prefer exploring on foot just so I don't have to worry about the horse, plus dismounting takes too long when I am attacked.

I found on the ES4 wiki that you're supposed to be able to go the stable where he's from and he'll be there. But I got the free "old nag" horse with the horse armor plug-in from Snak gra-Bura and he's not there. I'm really sad! He was slow but I liked him. And I have to buy the horse armor from now on, too.

I find it annoying that even a master of blade/blunt cannot attack while on horseback. Perhaps they couldn't sort out how to do the mechanics right? Other games certainly have it implemented fairly well, I think.

The horse does eventually show up in the original stable if he happens to wander off, or if you switch to a different horse, but not if he dies.

I've got a black horse I bought in Cheydinhal, and while he is fast, he's off looking for grassy meadows about the second I dismount. I sometimes have to fast travel to where I already am just to get the horse to come back.

The paint horse that was loaned to me early on was never like that, he'd always be right where I had left him. But he was also rather slow on the hoof so perhaps he wasn't in a big hurry to go anywhere, mounted or solo.

Though from what I have read, the horse-armor plug-in disables the "wander home" mechanic and the (armored) horse will be wherever you left him. I can't confirm that since I don't have any plugins, just vanilla Oblivion for PC.

I wish there was a mechanism to turn off the automatic usage of a horse when fast traveling, and turn it on again when needed. That way I won't accidentally land my horse in the middle of a hot zone, but could still use him for faster travel between cities.

Those Cheydinhal horses are like that, they say! LOL

I did find out that if you steal a horse, he tries to walk back to where he came from. At least, the white horse I stole -- err, borrowed -- in Anvil did that.
