How fun is a single blade playthrough?

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 3:38 am

One blade in the right hand, but nothing in the left.

Just wondering, since I am thinking about a rogue/warrior type of character, a very agile warrior, let's keep it with that.

But is it fun? I can understand it can be difficult, but I don't mind that.

If you couple it with sneak and get the stealthy stabbing multiplier

I am thinking about this:

One-handed

Light armor

Sneaking will be used, but more for ambushes.

Smithing (Only the right side, leathercraft and making blades fits an agile warrior IMO.)

She will be a companion aswell, but not a thief.

I got that one aswell.

I tend to play more characters at the same time, and I switch around depending on which one I feel like playing with. :P

It's fun. My current character (seen in my avatar) is a Ranger (see link in my sig) who only uses a bow for ranged combat and a single sword, no shield, for melee. He doesn't wear any armor besides gauntlets and boots, so he makes judicious use of the block skill. It's a lot of fun. When you get goot timeing with your swings and blocks, it makes you feel like a real sword fighter.

I would add the Block tree. Even if its just 2 perks. Shield Wall and the Reflex perk that slows down time, that has saved my life on multiple occasions.

Oh yes, ofcourse.

Completely forgot about block. I am planning to put quite some perks into that, the ability to disarm an opponent is quite the move of a rogue.

Still, considering I want this character to be more of a fit for warrior no thievery will be made, so yeah. Definitely going to join the companions, an agile warrior/rogue fits fine in there.

I am also deciding if I want to be Lycan or not, seems really fun. But it won't allow my character to go to Sovngarde, which isn't that much of a problem, but still. The Hunting Grounds is not a bad place either.

I never seem to be able to get Disarming Bash to work. I don't know if it's percentage based and I'm just unlucky, or what.

I think it is pure luck here.

Probably just unlucky. It works all the time for me. It's especially useful if you're quick enough to pick up their weapon before they have a chance to retrieve it!

As to the viability of single-blade combat, if you're willing to go through the College questline, the Slow Time shout can make it one of the easiest playstyles you've ever done. Even without it, if you can bob and weave to dodge blows and arrows, you'll be fine. Personally, when I play single-blade, I'll dabble in Restoration to heal myself both during and after a fight.

I am going to keep magic out of my build, that way I can focus more on the ''agile warrior'' idea.

As I said, to each his own :D

Perhaps Alchemy would be more a wandering rogue's forte? Seems like you'd nibble on the plant life while traveling the roads. Also, since you won't be carrying a shield, more space for potions!

Edit: Not only for healing potions, but poisons can be life-savers in tough fights, such as against dragons or bandit chiefs.

That's what I've usually always ran with.. Unless it's ok to sometimes have magic in the left hand.

Alchemy would be a good idea if your not going to have restoration school of magic, make us of poisons as well, paralysis poisons especially - namira's rot, briar hearts from what I know right now.

I am unsure about sneak, doesn't fit a warrior but it does fit a rogue.

It's good to still use the basic healing spell between fights to give you a boost. Of course, this is less and less beneficial as you increase your level/health, but it's better than waiting to restore health and saves you some health potions between fights.

I suppose, yeah.

Not too sure on race yet, I like female Nords for this one. But their racial power isn't exactly something for this build.

Maybe wood elf.

Or I do decide to make her a Lycan, that way the battle cry can be like a growl in human form.

Would sneaking be necessary? I have a feeling it would end up in me not using it.

I like it, I made a blind swordsman build that's similar to yours and enjoy a single sword better then sword and board. You can block and bash with the sword, not as good as a shield but still good enough to be efficient in combat.

I even did an unorthodox version of this with the sword in the left hand and an open right for punching, it's not as good or effective as being able to block but I had some fun early on with this as I was playing a female Khajiit rogue type.

Savage Strike is the only reason I even consider playing 1H. With a chance of taking off the head of my enemy, that just begged me to perk up. :)

As for the game being difficult, actually, I didn't find this a problem. With 1H, you can easily dance around your enemies, and side step attacks. A greater range of flexibility as well because of this.

However, if you build up your stats too quickly, 1H becomes boring, even with the decaps. Balance your game well, and 1H can stay a challenge.

Dragons take a bit longer to take down, so be aware some will fly away since you didn't down them fast enough. If you're looking to loot bones for armor, this may prove a challenge.

Other than that, you should have a pretty fun game. :)

PS: this skill is really fun in the DB quests.
