Hello im new and I wanted to know how to get new spells. I am a Khajiit mage and I attend at the Colledge of Winterhold, i tried talking to Faralda but all she offered me was books.

When you were escaping from Helgen, there was a dead mage in a cell. Next to him was a book. If you picked it up and read it, you got a spell. If you've made it to Whiterun, you can buy spellbooks from the court mage. You should be able to buy them from people in the College, as well.

As far as what to get, what do you want to do?

Console: Left or right trigger, I'm not sure about PC, it should give instruction about which button to use :)

No worries about being new, nobody actually answered your question so far.

When you buy a spell book, it shows up in your inventory. There's a control for reading books (and other written things like letters, recipes, notes etc.) from your inventory. I don't know your platform so I can't tell you, but look for the on-screen instructions.

When you read a spell book, the spell is added to your available list under the magic section of the main menu. A fireball is listed under Destruction spells etc. Open the main menu and navigate to the Magic section, navigate to the category you want (Destruction, Restoration, Conjuration, etc.), find the spell and select it for your left hand or right hand. Again, look for the on-screen instructions.

When you read the book, it is destroyed and disappears from your inventory. If you try to read it and nothing happens, that's because you already have the spell.

Ok? Good luck have fun!

Fear not, acolyte. Find my holy city Valthume and remove the evil spirit Valdar. Free me from my imprisonment and I will teach you. You will receive a master's course from a 5,000 year old sorcerer.

I await thee.

On PC it's "E" (standard layout). As you rise in ranks in your chosen school you will find more spells become available from vendors. To get the best possible spell in each school (i.e. a permanent summon) you will have to do a quest.

Thanks, you answered my question, but I still have one more question. How do you know which book is a spell book (I assume not every book in skyrim is a spell book) ?

They have different covers depending on the school of magic. They will also say "Spell Tome" before the name of the spell.

All spell books start with Spell Tome:[spell name].

Ok thanks everybody who posted a good answer, unlike some of you.

One minute in modern day Skyrim, and the savage Nords have already corrupted you.

Pity.

Ouch! That's kind of harsh - remember that not everyone who tries to help can communicate effectively.

Khalaharri, he's Role Playing in the forums. It's supposed to be fun, but I suppose it's not if you don't get the joke. It's better to just let it go than calling attention to it.

Hev is one of the Dragon Priests you'll meet, eventually, in game. After you've got a few hundred hours in Skyrim you'll understand. The RPing in the forums always tickles me.

Yeah, ok. This was kind of an intense response to a simple question. But it goes with the turf, some folks role play their character on the forums. That's cool, right? Sure it is.
