How to get Redguard working under Windows XP

Post » Tue Jul 13, 2010 12:38 am

Been playing Redguard, and for the most part it works perfectly - except that about half the time in-game, and in all of the movies (altho when I watch the movies a second time from the options screen they work perfectly) the subtitle text is corrupted and unreadable; anyone else having this problem?

I'm running the game in Glide using Windows 98 and a Voodoo 5

sinder- im afraid that you might have to use glidos.

Ive never used DGvoodoo, but could you ask for someone else's setup file? perhaps you have incompatable drivers? I dont know.

Ive played in 3dfx mode and software mode, and I have to say both turn out to about the same.

This is a step-by-step Guide to Making 'Redguard' work under the WindowsXP operating system. Originally by ThePaladin, updated by gblues.

Thanks to 'Freddo' for vital information to making Redguard work.

1. Install the full 3DFX version of Redguard (and remember the directory it is being installed to, usually C:\Program Files\Redguard). When you get to the audio configuration, just choose "No sound."

2. Download a Glide wrapper. Currently the only two that will work are http://dege.freeweb.hu/ (use Google if link doesn't work) and http://www.glidos.net/.

* GliDOS costs $10 but has a Redguard preset that will get you sound, but not music.
* dgVoodoo is free but will require more work to get it working--but you can get both audio and music with this option.

3. Download http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/ and install it (you'll need this for working sound).

4. Download http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=1715. Extract the SAPUCDEX.EXE into your Redguard folder.

5. If you downloaded dgVoodoo, here's how you install it:

- Unzip the following files into your Windows folder (usually C:\WINDOWS):

glide2x.dll
glide2x.ovl
dgVoodoo.exe
dgVoodoo.vxd
dgVoodooSetup.exe (create a shortcut to this one onto your Desktop)

- Run dgVoodooSetup.exe (using the shortcut you created). then make the following changes:
Under the 'Global' tab:
- Check the 'DOS' box under 'Platform'
- Check 'Windowed Mode' under 'Screen Mode' do NOT select 'Fullscreen Mode'
- Check 'Working in VDD Mode' under 'WinXP options for DOS'
Under the 'Glide' tab:
- Select 'Closer to a real hardware' under 'LFB access'
- Press 'OK' and the Setup box should close

6. Go to your Redguard folder and open the Audio folder, then right-click SETSOUND.EXE and choose "Run with VDMSound." Configure the digital audio for a SB Pro (*not* SB-16!).

7. Go back to your Redguard folder and click File > New > Text File. Double-click it to launch Notepad. Enter the following:

CD "C:\Program Files\Redguard" (replace with whatever the path is to your Redguard folder, and keep it in quotes)
@DOSDRV
@SAPUCDEX
@RGFX

(for those who care: "@DOSDRV" initializes VDMSound; "@SAPUCDEX" enables CD audio, and "@RGFX" launches the game)

Click File > Save, and close Notepad. Right-click the file you just created and choose Rename, and name it something like REDGUARD.BAT (you'll get a warning, just click Yes. If you don't get a warning, make sure Windows is showing your file extensions then try again).

8. Create a shortcut to REDGUARD.BAT and place the shortcut wherever you want it (desktop, start menu, whatever).

And that's it! Redguard should be working in WindowsXP! Hope this helped you and enjoy the great Elder Scrolls game that is Redguard!

its still not working when i go to load the game it stops and says 16 bit MS-DOS Subsytem then when you read what it says it says this
shortcut to REDGUARD.BAT
An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly. Choose 'Close' to teminate the application.
then its got close or ignore. ive tried them both and my game is still not workin so what do you think i should do. Im pretty sure i done it all right.

I have followed the instuctions, and only get this message when I try to run it:
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
Redguard Game
An application has attemptet to directly access the hard disk, wich cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.
|Close| |Ignore|

If I press ignore, I get a black screen.

Also, when I try to run the DgVoodoo.exe, I only get the error sound (no message, though).

I just got redguard to work on xp. First I followed the original post and it would freeze black and not load at all. Then I used the alternative method explained around post 46 and it works. I just need to turn the gamma up and maybe slow the game down a little and it will work fine.

I agree. This really needs to be stickied!! I tried the second alternative (I completely messed up the first one, so I decided to give the second one a spin) and it works perfectly, except it is very sluggish and laggy...can anyone help me?

How long does it take to complete the main quest? Are there side quests, or is it a completely linear game?

I'm going to try to get it working this week.

Oh FFS... Stinking windows. I guess I have to get that old PC of mine, just for these 4 games: Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard and UFO, Enemy Unknown. Maybe Battlespire too, someday.

Edit: of, FYI I just bought Redguard with 14 euros :/

Well, I have XP and can run Arena and Daggerfall. I'm going to get Redguard if I can find it.

Apologies for bumping an old topic, but I found something for people who find the game running sluggish:

Copy speedset.exe and speedset.dll from your VDMSound directory and paste them into your Redguard directory.

Right click on RG3D.exe and setup VDMSound's properties, and under the Autoexec.bat (DOS Environment tab) insert: speedset 0.019 (edited)

You may have to play with the speed settings to fit your CPU speed, but that was the number that worked out for me. You can tell if you've gone too far with the settings if the clouds above whiz by at the speed of sound :)

Just got Redguard up and running with this guide. Very helpful! I was having no luck at all before I found it.
