How to get Redguard working under Windows XP

Post » Mon Jul 12, 2010 7:58 pm

This is a step-by-step Guide to Making 'Redguard' work under the WindowsXP operating system. Originally by ThePaladin, updated by gblues.

Thanks to 'Freddo' for vital information to making Redguard work.

1. Install the full 3DFX version of Redguard (and remember the directory it is being installed to, usually C:\Program Files\Redguard). When you get to the audio configuration, just choose "No sound."

2. Download a Glide wrapper. Currently the only two that will work are http://dege.freeweb.hu/ (use Google if link doesn't work) and http://www.glidos.net/.

* GliDOS costs $10 but has a Redguard preset that will get you sound, but not music.
* dgVoodoo is free but will require more work to get it working--but you can get both audio and music with this option.

3. Download http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/ and install it (you'll need this for working sound).

4. Download http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=1715. Extract the SAPUCDEX.EXE into your Redguard folder.

5. If you downloaded dgVoodoo, here's how you install it:

- Unzip the following files into your Windows folder (usually C:\WINDOWS):

glide2x.dll
glide2x.ovl
dgVoodoo.exe
dgVoodoo.vxd
dgVoodooSetup.exe (create a shortcut to this one onto your Desktop)

- Run dgVoodooSetup.exe (using the shortcut you created). then make the following changes:
Under the 'Global' tab:
- Check the 'DOS' box under 'Platform'
- Check 'Windowed Mode' under 'Screen Mode' do NOT select 'Fullscreen Mode'
- Check 'Working in VDD Mode' under 'WinXP options for DOS'
Under the 'Glide' tab:
- Select 'Closer to a real hardware' under 'LFB access'
- Press 'OK' and the Setup box should close

6. Go to your Redguard folder and open the Audio folder, then right-click SETSOUND.EXE and choose "Run with VDMSound." Configure the digital audio for a SB Pro (*not* SB-16!).

7. Go back to your Redguard folder and click File > New > Text File. Double-click it to launch Notepad. Enter the following:

CD "C:\Program Files\Redguard" (replace with whatever the path is to your Redguard folder, and keep it in quotes)
@DOSDRV
@SAPUCDEX
@RGFX

(for those who care: "@DOSDRV" initializes VDMSound; "@SAPUCDEX" enables CD audio, and "@RGFX" launches the game)

Click File > Save, and close Notepad. Right-click the file you just created and choose Rename, and name it something like REDGUARD.BAT (you'll get a warning, just click Yes. If you don't get a warning, make sure Windows is showing your file extensions then try again).

8. Create a shortcut to REDGUARD.BAT and place the shortcut wherever you want it (desktop, start menu, whatever).

And that's it! Redguard should be working in WindowsXP! Hope this helped you and enjoy the great Elder Scrolls game that is Redguard!

Yeah, it's pretty easy:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click Tools > Folder Options
3. Click on the View tab
4. Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known filetypes" and click OK

No wonder I'm wanting and asking gamesas to make a ES Collection re-released to run in the native modern Win OS's (Win 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP)! ;)

This question is just one out of curiosity (I don't have XP):
By installing all of those wrappers, the Voodoo Wrapper (for video) and VDMSound (for sound), will this by chance mess up any of your modern sound card drivers or video card drivers?

When I run the batch file I get this error:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe
An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly.

When I choose "Ignore" it just closes. Any ideas?

That message is normal, and clicking "ignore" should let the game run. You might try dropping to a DOS window and invoke the batch file from the command line--maybe you'll get some kind of error message?

Winotron, that's exactly the same error I got when I tried fooling around with dgVoodoo. Never bothered to take a closer look at it though, as I had played in software mode and I didn't feel like going through the goblin caves yet again.

The board administration does not want too many pinned threads in a forum, so I'm not sure this would be, or could be, pinned as an individual thread. However, if there would be more threads like this, explaining how to get the 'old' games to work on newer hardware, then maybe that compilation is a better option to be pinned.

I remember Freddo made a thread in the old forums explaining how to get Arena to work. These two combined would make a good start in my opinion. :)

I'd say it is. Go ahead and make it. When it's done I can put in a good word to have it pinned. No guarentees of course, but surely a good chance.

Yes. You just need to edit the glidos.ini file and point the RG preset towards a batch file that runs sapucdex.exe and rgfx.exe.

Thanks, I've been trying to get RG going for ages now:)

I just followed the instructions above and it all worked fine on XP Home. Not tried Pro though.

Ok, I did everything in this thread step by step but I have/had a few problems.

1- When I first started it, there was no audio at all. The author of the thread suggested to turn the audio off during setup for some reason and I did, so when I was done & there was no sound I went back & turned it back on, now I have sound, but it sounds a little slow and... crackily... just poor enough quality to be distracting... So that svcks...

2- Heres the BIG problem- The game is running almost (but not quite) in slow-mo, every diaglogue scene seems to drag on a bit & when I am running around the world the movement is VERY sluggish, then couple minutes it will suddenly speed up & I will sprint for a sec or two.

So the audio is terrible, and the game is sluggish. Is there any way to remedy this? Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

System stats- (dunno if some of these are of any importance :P)

-P4 2.53 Ghz
-768 Ram
-Virtual Memory: 154 used, 953 Avaliable, Paging file size range of
384-2000 (I don't know what this means)
-Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE, 256 MB
-1024 x 768 Res, dual screens
-Integrated audio
-29.7/55.8 GB Hard drive space used

Oh, and this is the LEAST important thing I want help on, but is there any way to get it to be FULL screen, w/o the emulator's window bar at the top of the screen?

Thanks a lot for these instructions. This thread actually inspired me to start looking for Redguard, and recently I got a german language version very cheap from ebay. With these instructions I could instantly get everything to run. Only problem I had is that it sometimes hangs when loading a new cell, but it doesnt happen all that often, so I can live with that. And its a surprisingly good game, considering that I have read reviews ranging all the way from praise to total damnation. Interesting how the graphics are really kind of an intermediate between Daggerfall and Morrowind.
So I can only encourage other people to give this little classic a try, these emulators really work!
