How good of a historian are you?

Post » Mon Aug 29, 2011 6:23 pm

So I was helping answer someone's thread just now when it occured to me...I'm really bad with TES lore. :guilty: I wish I had more time to really learn it in detail, really study it, really know it. Everytime I learn a bit of something, from an in-game book or UESP or whatever, I'll get all ADD and forget it within an hour. And it svcks because I got a lot of A's in history as a kid. :ooo:

I know there have been 3 eras, Oblivion is during the 3rd era. I know Alessia took over the world from the Ayleids. I know a handful of other stuff. But I'm probably a D student so far as lore goes. If we had a pop quiz on Oblivion and Tamriellic lore right this moment, I'd score a D...maybe a C if the quiz were multiple choice.

How about you? Are you an A student? A B student? C? D? Are you a total Tamriellic Lore flunky!???!

I'd say I'm an A student when it comes to TES lore. I read a ton of the books, I pay close attention to the details, and I visit the Imperial Library and UESP often. TES games are fun for me because I get to take part in a fantasy world. It helps me feel immersed and engaged in that world if I know how it works and why it works. I know a lot of the history, but it's more the metaphysics that interests me.

See, that's awesome. I have one character who really reads books (my paladin) and while I'm reading them, I feel like I'm getting it all. But then I could read the same exact book a week later and barely remember stuff. :( I'd probably have to take notes if I really wanted to get serious!

That little tidbit in my opening post, for instance, the one about Alessia conquering the Ayleids...that took me a LONG TIME to remember. I guess I'm bad with names, and don't even get me started on dates!

I'd say a strong C. I'm not the best, but not the worst. I'm weak on the finer details. And, like you, I suffer from CRS!

I'm not sure how I would rate myself, but I do like lore and think I know quite a decent chunk of it.

I'd say a C, maybe low B. I know a little bit, and when I want to find something out, I research it thoroughly. Unfortunately, I don't want to find things out very often.

C or B.I know my lore mostly when it comes to the Dunmer and metaphysics.I don't know much about Orcs, Argonians, Khajit, Bosmer. My knowledge of Empire history is so-so.Usually not interested in it, unless it involves, you guessed, Dunmer.

I don't know TES lore very well. I'm more interested in making up my own lore. Thanks to the Construction Set I can use these games to send my characters on journeys that are frequently independent of the TES universe. To me, Morrowind and Oblivion are vast warehouses full of wonderful, amazing stuff that I re-assemble into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_art, blank canvasses on which I can paint my own pictures.

I do a ninja side-step around anything that gets in the way of my roleplaying. If quests get in the way of my roleplaying I avoid them. Likewise, if lore gets in the way of roleplaying I avoid lore as well.

History? I'd say at least a B if not an A, lore on the other hand I'd say a B or C given it contains so much more than just the recorded history of Tamriel.

A, as long as we don't get into obscure names or Daggerfall lore. Or so I hope. Come to think of it, I'm not all that sharp on people/events/locations within the games outside of the main quests. Don't really play far enough to remember or experience the end game stuff.

I see the thread o' quizes has been necromanced. That was fun, should make some more.

A if I know it, halfassed B if I don't. Got perfects of 90%s on the quizzes, but there are those who are leagues above me. I'm just a good Dummies Guide.
