How do greatswords actually attach to the character?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:25 pm

I could ask this about a lot of weapons, but just curious about this one in particular. In real life, and or skyrim, how do people put giant swords on their back as if it were magnetic? Not trying to hate on the game, legit curious.

I think a better question is, "Where do players keep their off hand weapon?" It disappears. That's worse than magnetism.

The same way warhammers and battleaxes do obviously.

Ok true, but at least it's not an eyesore, with all your stuff magically following you. And everygame has that joke anyway. But since I see him put the greatsword on his back, and everyone else too, or even in real life, don't people have swords on their back that aren't always sheathed?

The better question is where do they keep anything but equipped armor and primary weapon?

Do they keep 'em in their stomach?

@OP: in real life, a greatsword should be put in its sheath, or at least there's some kind of ring or something that holds it, just like what happens to the primary weapon. As for the others, I have no idea

Jokes aside, it makes sense to wonder.

They made scabbards and sheaths for one-handed weapons, why not the two-handed ones?

I figure we all have pockets with undetectable extension charms, like Hermione's bag in HP.

Bags of holding obviously. It's where all stuff in your inventory actually goes. How else would you be able to carry along 100K plus septims and an enormous pile of loot without so much as looking bulky. On top of this bag is a handy sticky tape that holds the big weapons.

In reality Greatswords were not kept on backs during combat situations. At least not often. And of course they almost always had sheathes. They were never as big as any of the greatswords in Skyrim either. At least not the ones used by most people. They had the length of about 50-72 inches and weighed about 6-10 lbs. They were about 2-3 inches wide on base of the blade and usually tapered to a point. Mostly used for slashing. They mostly were worn on the back only during travel for convenience sake. Same as shields. They were worn at the hip or were in the sheathes of their horses. Greatswords were only used by Knights for the most part with few exceptions.

In real life, warrior first sheats the weapon and then put it on his back.

It would be much quicker to pull a blade that isn't in a sheath, unless your a samurai ninja or something. But seriously, wouldn't some type of hooking device make for quicker access. Especially a bulky weapon like a great sword or axe.

That's what I was thinking.

You could have a short sheath bit at the lower end so you can easily lift the weapon away, and hooks at the upper end to hold it secure by the hilt guard.

Wouldn't protect it well but you could carry and draw it pretty easily I think.

It works the same way you can shove an entire suit of plate armor and several battle axes into your pocket.

A wizard did it. To question it is to cause the very fabric of reality to fall apart and destroy the universe. :sorcerer:

I suppose I would have a strong leather loop on the back of my armor that would serve as an improvised sheath holding the weapon in suspension, though upon further thought the loop would probably be cut upon drawing it out again :D

The only thing I do know about greatswords is they were utilized against mounted cavalry and breaking up enemy pike formations (because of their long reach).

A bit beside the point, but interesting nonetheless!

so there's some people that throwing fire or placing a freezing trap from their palm, or a necromancer that calls skeleton back to life, some battlemage that summons sword and axe from thin air or some crazy tribe that replace his heart with fruit-like-thing

and you asked how greatsword hung in your back?

thats something that bugs me the most, because all the other stuff you carry is atleast not shown at all... but this stupid 2hander just magically stays on your back.

what ever... it's pretty obvious that they gave the most love to 1hand swords. rest is just there.

You could probably easily hold a greatsword with a metal loop on your back that holds onto the swords crossguard. But what about axes and hammers? I'd think those would have to be placed on your back handle first so they can be held by their heads not head first like in the game.

It's physically impossible to draw a blade of any considerable length from a fixed sheath on your back.

Give it a try; your arm isn't long enough to draw a blade of over 2 feet or so.

If you have a sword and dagger, both sheaths are on the same side of the character model.
