How To Guide: Run Dosbox as Daggerfall Emulator

Post » Tue Nov 02, 2010 12:07 pm

How do I launch the game after doing all this?  I'm opening dosbox.exe and getting the following message:

C:\>cd dagger
Unable to change to: dagger.

C:\>fall.exe z.cfg
Illegal command: fall.exe.
I'm pretty bad with computers, so I hope someone can help.  I own the original daggerfall cd (legally) and would really like to get this to work.  I think I followed all the steps in the orignal post.

I don't think that dosbox is recognizing the fall.exe file from c:\dagger.

Does anyone know why this would happen?

NM I got it to work.

I don't remember the game being this hard 9 years ago.  I think I lost my skills.

I got it working, but yeah, your right I had it in a subfolder of C:

In my dosbox.config file I had the right path, but it didn't like that very much. After moving dagger into C: it works great. Thanks for your help.

If you use the Daggerfall WinXP Installer, it applies the .213 patch as well... so there's no need to worry about it :D

Thanks for the reply. I used the method described by the OP to install daggerfall, so I should be all set. I appreciate the help.

Now back to Ragorik (my PC).

Does anyone else have problems getting the video parts of Daggerfall to play? Like the Bethesda logo when the game starts and the video with the emperor right after character creation. DOS-Box seems to just skip them on my computer.

Do you mean completely skip them all together? If you can play the game but it skips over the movies, its probably a non-dos box related problem.

I got it working with that dfinstall from uesp.net but there's no sound. I didn't wanna join file planet to get the 41 MB installer and I can't find it anywhere else. Can someone help? I got a message about saved games and need to create a directory or something. When I went to test the sound the whole dos window didn't do anything. Had to ctrl-alt-delete. I can save my game. I just need sound.

Are the videos loaded from the CD? I think that might be the problem.

All you have to do is copy the entire contents of the Arena2 folder from the CD into your own Arena2 folder on your hard drive. Change the pathcd in the z.cfg to point to the arena2 on your hard drive rather then the CD (so it's the same as the "path" entry) and you're set for no CD. Still have to run the game "fall.exe z.cfg" instead as just running "dagger.exe" of course.

Please help me. I followed the instructions TO THE LETTER and it still won't work for me. It just sets up as a blank screen, I can hear sound but there is no picture, and my monitor just says 'OUT OF RANGE' which is what it says whenever it is receiving no images from the computer.

Here is my dosbox.cfg
[sdl]
# fullscreen -- Start dosbox directly in fullscreen.
# fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen.
# fullfixed -- Don't resize the screen when in fullscreen.
# fullresolution -- What resolution to use for fullscreen, use together with fullfixed.
# output -- What to use for output: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,ddraw.
# hwscale -- Extra scaling of window if the output device supports hardware scaling.
# autolock -- Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen.
# sensitiviy -- Mouse sensitivity.
# waitonerror -- Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error.
# priority -- Priority levels for dosbox: lower,normal,higher,highest.
#            Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# mapperfile -- File used to load/save the key/event mappings from.

# cycledown    Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=normal
cycles=18000
cycleup=500
cycledown=100

[mixer]
# nosound -- Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though.
# rate -- Mixer sample rate, setting any devices higher than this will
#        probably lower their sound quality.

Have you tried changing fullresolution to 0x0 so it uses your default desktop resolution?

Have you tried settings fullfixed to true, or changing output to overlay or opengl?

It works now, thanks very much :)

One last thing, what do I do to make the mouse work in dosbox? I mean, it moves around the screen but I can't click anything

EDIT: Re-read original post. Thanks again, ta ta.

Best. Thread. Ever.

Agreed :D

I have problems with sound/gameplay myself. It would run nice and smooth for oh lets say 10-15 seconds and then would start stuttering for a while (including slow gameplay) and then will run smoothly again for a little while and the stuttering etc ad nauseum.

Any ideas or possible fixes?

You probably don't have it correctly set up to run daggerfall without the CD. Dosbox usually has problems usuing the CD drive, so you have to run it directly from your hard drive alone.

If you are going to run Daggerfall without the CD, you must do the following:
1. On your Daggerfall CD is a folder named Arena2. On your hard drive, in your dagger directory, there is also an Arena2 folder. Copy the contents of the one on your CD into the one on your hard drive. It will overwrite many things already there, and then add all the things that were only on the CD.

2. Open up your z.cfg file in your dagger directory. In it are 2 important lines: path (which points to the arena2 folder on yuor hard drive) and pathcd (which points to the arena2 folder on your CD). Change the pathcd to match path. That is, they should both point to the same directory: C:\dagger\arena2.

3. Now, you cannot just run Dagger.exe. Instead you must run "fall.exe z.cfg" (which your dosbox is already configured to do, if you copy-pasted Mechaexailious's dosbox.conf file).

And please don't be writing for instructions if you don't actually OWN a DF CD. ;) Not insinuating that anyone HAS stolen DF, but shame if you did. They're watching you, you know...

You're probably missing your sky.dat files. They should be in your Arena2 folder on your hard drive. If they aren't there (there should be 32 of them: sky00.dat to sky31.dat), copy them from the Arena2 folder on your CD.

Okay, I now have two problems.
1. When copying the sky files this error: Cannot copy____: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). Comes up for these files: Sky00, Sky01, Sky02 and Sky27. What's the problem?
2. I do not get the background music when playing Daggerfall. How do I get it?

1. Hmm, that's a new one... try again later? I really don't know what to do there.

2. Have you run Setup.exe (in your dagger directory) to configure your sound/music? Dosbox emulates 3 different sound cards: Soundblaster Pro, MPU-401, and Gravis Ultrasound. Use Soundblaster for digital. As for midi, the soundcard you select determines which of the 2 music sets you get. Soundblaster Pro will do one, and MPU-401 will do the other. Personally, I prefer the MPU-401 set, but that's just personal preference. SBP has the better version of the snow tune. You can find more info on the music sets http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=225679&hl=.

Note that setup won't be able to see/test the soundcards if you run it outside dosbox, but they will work once you get into the game.

There's a 90% chance that's causing your sky problems, if you can't copy them it's probably because of a scratch in the disk, or they're corrupt. If you have a cd burner try putting the cd in that and copying them, as usually cd/dvd burners are better at recognizing files on scratched disks, if that doesn't work I can try to make a zip file of my sky dat files for you.

Cyclic redundency check failures are caused when the cd tries to read afile, fails, and slows down to do it again, reapeatedly. It happens when the CD has been tried at the lowest speed the CD ROM drive is capable of.
