How important is apparel customization to you?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:49 pm

I want to ornament, for example, a sword in a way that I can rightfully say: this is my sword, it's been my companion in combat for all this while, it has this name, it stands out through these engravings etc. Same for a helmet. Imagine you can gild the eyeguard and ridge or customize the noseguard into a duck's beak. And this is never going to happen. :banghead: :pinch:

The helmet thing, yeah probably never going to happen. The sword on the other hand, it can happen, if Bethesda makes puts some effort into forging, crafting and finally enchanting, we might be able to pull some pretty cool and unique swords.

We can already put different names in our enchanted pieces of equipment, say Bethesda makes enchanting actually change the appearence and special effects of our items, maybe some runes will appear carved on it or flames all over it.

Crafting seems pretty shallow based on what we've seen, like Fallout 3 or FNV's crafting. Forging on the other hand does not have any details, though it could be just like crafting too. Luckily, it won't.

If everything turns out better than I expect, we will be able to forge a cool sword with different minerals that can be gathered through Mining, and then apply a nice enchanting over it, change it's name and BOOM! We have a nice weapon to call unique and ours!

As much customization as the engine can bear. Not just with apparel though, because in reality, my armor is my apparel most of the time (unless I'm playing a mage).

oh hey look another poll comparing Oblivion and Morrowind
also there are more armor slots in Fallout than in Oblivion, and there are different textures and addons for armor and clothing so it would really be the highest level of custom

What?

Fallout 1 / 2 / 3 and FNV had only 2 proper slots, body armor and helmet.

Oh my gawd, please stop with pointless whining and saying we can't compare the two most recent games in the same damn series as Skyrim. And fallout had close to no customization in armor, which felt okay since it was fallout

Id really love to be able to customize my armor/clothes. This is big for me in RPG's. One gripe about games like Mass Effect or Fallout where its 1 complete suit with no customization.

I counted it had 19, a bunch of them were kinda useless though, but I am just saying fallout had addons and texture packs with armor/clothing so in no way is it low

I don't know what game your playing. My Fallout character could only wear 3 things at a time.

Some posts mention Daggerfall options, the trouble is you couldn't see your avatar in game so they could add as much customization as they liked, in the later games with 1st/3rd they have to solve all the clipping issues, which makes clothes over armour a bigger ask than it seems.
How the hell did I play Fallout with 18 armour slots missing, very confused.

Nothing less than World of Warcraft(you can say allot about that game, but the customization is top-notch): boots, leggings, belt, chestpiece, shoulderpads, wristbands, gauntlets, helmet, shirt, cloak, tabard, neck-jewlery, rings, trinkets, AND gemming slots on those epic items. Pheeww. Did I miss something? Oh yeah, weapons :P

 It just doesn't bother me. If they had options to dye everything technicolour, wear odd shoes, I'd never use it. The only thing I'd want improved from Oblivion is that trousers shouldn't change to skirts on female characters - I'm not fussed how my character looks normally, but rocking a chainmail tunic and an ankle length skirt is a tough thing to do :P

If you wanted it, it is possible, for me Elder Scrolls is all about customization, I am not trying to bash you just saying that customizing is one of my main draws to the game and I make several characters and roleplay them all so thiings like this matter to me big time... :teehee:

You got to be kidding...

Yeah that's what I said.

I would very much like as customizable as you could get, like a slot for everything, my visible gear is most important to me, because it shows off the personality of the character to some extent, usually in games like Oblivion where what you wear doesn't matter much statistically, I wear what looks the coolest, in games like World of Warcraft, it makes me sad to find a really good piece of gear, that looks ridiculous.

Also, anyone know if they'll be adding capes and cloaks to the game?

I think both are important I would hate to sacrifice one for the other as both help define my character. I play in third person as well and love to see whoever I am playing as.

WoW would be superior to oblivion but still inferior to the system they had in morrowind.

I like to imagine if they improved on the morrowind system for skyrim
by also adding customization to the armor itself such as: paint, decals, attachments (spikes, horns, patches, which can be custom placed by the player) and wearing styles (hood up/down etc).
The attachments would each have a weight value and be non-enchant-able.

I would like to be able to kill a RARE and giant stag, cut off it's antlers and attach them to my helm. I would like to attach a rope to my belt so it drags behind me and attach heads of slain monsters or people to the rope.
Also I would like free-hand painting on my armor so i can put a demon face on my full helm.

Customization is Alpha and Omega for me. So Morrowind or Daggerfall. However, I wouldn't get upset if I choose a mithril curiass and find that the ebony pauldrons can't be used. In some cases a certain type of pauldron can only be used with a certain type of curiass, because the mounting mechanism would be different. Smithing an ebony pauldron into the shape of a mithril pauldron so it can be used with a mithril curiass would be cool though.

Clothes, the more the merrier, but I don't have a real desire to customize everything about it. Might just end up like a "cool but useless" thing. Having certain clothes under and over (at least some) armor styles would be awesome. Also important is the ability to change into clothing with relative ease, and have certain penalties and bonuses to using both.

Morrowind was great, but I'd like more. Daggerfall had more than Morrowind. :)

That. Morrowind rocked as far as armor fashions did. Of all the games, I think Morrowind had the coolest armor. But Daggerfall had the best clothing styles, hands down.

The more the merrier.
Chargen is important. It bothers me that they are streamlining everything.
To an extent streamlining is good however its getting to the point were its constricting the characters you can make.
It comes to a point where there is less of me in my character and more of what the devs had planned.

Very high but not essential. If it's like Morrowind then it's good and if it's like Oblivion then it's still good. I'm personally hoping for even more customization and hopefully the smithing skill will work on that.

I don't really need things like different pauldrons for each shoulder or different gloves for each hand. I would be find if things that generally come in pairs stayed as one item, especially since I tend to prefer some sense of uniformity in what I am wearing.

However, one of the things that I would like to see make a return is layering. Most of the clothing was entirely useless in Oblivion in that it could not be worn under armor, which reduced to "uniqueness" of my characters.

I would appreciate the ability to have three layers of clothing. One would be dedicated to basic clothes, such as shirts, vests, leggings, etc. The second would be dedicated for primary armor, such as chestplates, gauntlets, and greaves. And the third could be reserved for outerwear, such as robes, tabards, and other fine details.

So, basically I'd be fine with a more streamlined equivalent of Morrowind's system. Allow for plenty of customization, but avoid making excessive amounts of armor slots.
